Kundasang: A total of 643 small roadside stall traders throughout Sabah have been identified as eligible to receive one-off assistance amounting to RM5,000 as announced in the tabling of the Sabah State Budget 2025. Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam who announced this said that the list of aid recipients was finalised after a comprehensive verification process carried out by a special committee involving the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (KKTP), the State Ministry of Finance and all Local Authorities (PBT). 'A field trip programme was carried out to obtain data on small roadside stall traders in all districts. 'After research was carried out based on the established mechanism, a total of 643 traders have been identified as eligible to receive this assistance,' he said. He was speaking when officiating the Kick-Off Ceremony for the Handover of Upgrading Efforts for the Community and the General Public (UNTUKMU) at the Sabah state level at the Kundasang Cultural Stage, here Thursday. Dr Joachim, who is also the Minister of Local Government and Housing, said that of the total, 47 recipients from the Ranau district received the assistance in the form of a one-off cash contribution worth RM5,000 each. He said that the initiative is a sign of the State Government's concern for the plight of small traders who are facing challenges such as increased operating costs, lack of capital and unstable business locations. He also considered small traders as micro-economic drivers who play an important role in providing services to the local community. 'Hopefully this assistance can be put to good use, whether to purchase equipment, as additional capital, or to further expand existing businesses,' he said. The ceremony on Thursday also saw the handover of mock cheques to the PBTs involved before the phased distribution of assistance to other districts is implemented. Also present were Deputy Permanent Secretary II of the KKTP, Faridah Giau; Ranau District Officer, Tinus Manggam; President of the Penampang Municipal Council, Francis Chong; representative of the Ranau Member of Parliament, Hussen Haji Jirat; representative of the Karanaan Assemblyman, Datuk Faimin Kamin; representative of the Paginatan Assemblyman, Hishamuddin Harun; Ranau Deputy Police Chief, ASP Edianshah Endal; KKTP officers and Community Leaders. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt assessing impact of reopening free-flow zone in Wang Kelian
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is considering relocating the roadblock near the Wang Kelian border closer to the Perlis Free-Flow Zone and erecting security fencing to secure the perimeter. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said these were among the measures being studied for a pilot project and simulation exercise that would be carried out to assess the impact of reopening the Wang Kelian Free-Flow Zone. He said other measures include using an artificial intelligence-powered monitoring and traveller movement system. "A meeting with stakeholders was held on July 15. The proposed pilot project will first be presented for consideration and approval by the home minister. "The pilot project aims to evaluate the economic and security impact before recommendations are submitted for cabinet approval," he said in the Dewan Rakyat today. Shamsul said the prospect of reopening the zone was frequently discussed with Thailand. "Both countries are studying the establishment of an expert working group to discuss matters, including the operation of an international entry point and immigration facilities." In May, the New Straits Times reported that the closure of the free-flow zone — once a key economic driver for Wang Kelian — had led to the town's decline. ( Former traders said in the town's heyday, they could earn RM20,000 in a weekend. Now, the once-bustling marketplace is gone. The free-flow zone was closed on April 1, 2015. The decision was criticised by then menteri besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man, who said he was not informed beforehand. He said records showed that the zone was economically beneficial, attracting more than 200,000 visitors through the Wang Kelian border, compared with about 142,000 Malaysians crossing into Thailand in 2014. Shamsul said the zone was closed due to security risks. "Authorities could not verify whether Thai nationals who entered Malaysia through the facility had exited through legal means, raising concerns that some slipped out through illegal routes. "This loophole created opportunities for human trafficking and the smuggling of controlled items, drugs and weapons, as the Secondary Control Post lacked full inspection facilities.

SC's AOB bars auditor from public interest audits for one year
The Securities Commission of Malaysia building in Kuala Lumpur KUALA LUMPUR: The Securities Commission Malaysia's (SC) Audit Oversight Board (AOB) has prohibited Ahmad Aljafree Mohd Razalli from accepting as clients and auditing any public interest entities or schedule funds for a one-year period, starting April 30, 2025. In a statement today, the SC said the AOB also imposed a fine of RM50,000 on Ahmad Aljafree, who is a partner of Al Jafree Salihin Kuzaimi PLT, an audit firm registered with the AOB. It said Ahmad Aljafree was the engagement partner of a public listed company (PLC) client for the financial years ended June 30, 2020 and June 30, 2021. "He failed to comply with the relevant International Standards on Auditing in the areas of prior year adjustments, property, plant and equipment, opening balances and consolidation,' it added. The SC said Ahmad Aljafree appealed to the commission against the AOB's imposed penalty but did not appeal against the prohibitions imposed. "The SC dismissed the appeal and affirmed the AOB's decision on the monetary penalty,' it said. - Bernama

NSCMH private placement kicks off with RM25mil investment from president
SEREMBAN: NSCMH Holdings Sdn Bhd has launched its private placement exercise with a strong show of confidence from the Negri Sembilan Chinese Maternity Association (NSCMA) president, Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock, who became the first subscriber with a RM25mil investment for 10 million shares. In a statement, NSCMH said support also came swiftly from the Seremban Wah Chai Association and the Negeri Sembilan Persatuan Hainan, which committed RM1mil and RM250,000 respectively. Following a briefing session, the three parties submitted their subscription forms on the spot. The private placement, priced at RM2.50 per share, is open to members of the NSCMA, employees, association members, and attending doctors of CMH Specialist Hospital and CMH Dialysis Care. A minimum subscription of 100,000 shares applies, with the exercise running until September 6. Lee conducted the briefing, outlining the mechanics of the placement, the hospital's long-term development blueprint, and answering questions from attendees. He assured that should the subscription be oversubscribed, he would reduce his portion to accommodate others; however, if undersubscribed, he would take up the balance to ensure the success of the exercise. 'This is not only a fundraising initiative but also a commitment to social responsibility. By leading with my own investment, I hope to inspire confidence and drive collective participation towards the success of this private placement,' Lee said. NSCMH plans to issue 18 million new shares, targeting RM45mil to finance 30% of the RM120mil construction cost for CMH Specialist Hospital's new medical block under its phase two redevelopment project. The remaining RM80mil will be funded through bank borrowings guaranteed personally by Lee, with corporate guarantees from the NSCMA and NSCMH Holdings. Lee stressed that the arrangement does not involve mortgaging hospital land or buildings and complies fully with the Association's constitution. Upon completion of the exercise, the NSCMA will retain a controlling stake of 69% in the company.
