Quarterback Luke Fahey of Mission Viejo is separating himself
Then there's something called character. For the last two years, he agreed to share playing time with Draiden Trudeau. Others might have bailed. Not Fahey.

'I feel God has a plan for everybody,' he said. 'That was my journey. Of course, everyone wants to be a full-time starter, but that was a good thing for me. There was a lot of adversity during those two years. I learned so much from Drai, and he pushed me to be an even better quarterback and better leader.'
Anyone watching Fahey on Saturday at Edison's Battle of the Beach seven-on-seven passing tournament were getting a glimpse of a 6-foot-1 quarterback in an obvious comfort zone calling his own plays and showing chemistry with a new group of receivers (returner Vance Spafford was missing because of illness). It's no wonder that Ohio State and coach Ryan Day identified him as a recruiting priority.
'It was a big decision,' Fahey said. 'For me, it was a no-brainer. It was a dream of mine to be at a place like that since I was a little kid. I told myself when I got the opportunity I'd take full advantage of it and maximize my opportunity. The coaches are amazing, the people there are even better. One thing that stood out they showed me a picture of their practice. I think 18 of 22 were in the NFL or got drafted. It speaks volumes to their program and my goal is to be a draft pick one day and make it to the NFL.'
Despite missing Spafford and star defensive back Jeron Jones, the Diablos went 7-0 and defeated Mission Hills in the final. The toughest game was a 26-25 win over Cathedral in the semifinals on a winning touchdown catch by Davonte Curtis. It's been quite a summer for Mission Viejo, which also won its own passing tournament by beating Mater Dei in the final.
As the summer passing season nears conclusion and official football practice begins at the end of this month, Saturday's Battle at the Beach is always a good opportunity to see teams and players making progress.

Santa Margarita, under new coach Carson Palmer and new quarterback Trace Johnson, a transfer from Florida, will have lots of weapons this fall. The Eagles lost to Long Beach Millikan in the championship game of the Silver Division.
USC commit Trent Mosley, who didn't play because of an injury, said of the new coaching staff, 'It's real good. I'm excited for the season.' His brother Grant, is an impressive sophomore receiver.

St. John Bosco clearly is one of most talented teams in regard to skill-position players, sending in wave after wave of top defensive backs and receivers. The Braves were young at those positions last season, so all it's going to take is strong line play to combine with the skill-position talent to make another run at Trinity League rival Mater Dei. After going 4-0 in the morning session, the Braves lost to Mission Hills in the quarterfinals.

JSerra, which lost starting quarterback Ryan Hopkins to Mater Dei, has a capable replacement in junior Koa Smith-Mayall, who missed all of last season recovering from a knee injury. He's only 5 feet 10 but has a powerful arm and considers himself a dual threat quarterback.
'I guess everyone outside of JSerra thought we'd be in trouble, but I knew I'd be ready,' he said.
Cathedral made it to the semifinals behind quarterback Jaden Jefferson, who will be aided by an improved offensive line this fall.
One of the most impressive quarterbacks was Troy Huhn of Mission Hills, a Penn State commit who got his team in the final with a win over Corona del Mar, which was a surprise team behind quarterback Brady Annett and receiver Dorsett Stecker.

Finally, let's not end the summer without knowing the answer to the question: Why did Fahey stay for four years at Mission Viejo?
'It speaks to what my dad and mom have preached to me since I was a little kid,' he said. 'That you can't up and leave. Loyalty is one of the biggest things in my family. I'm going to stay true to those who stay true to me.'
Says Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson of Fahey's fortitude: "Amazing."
In other tournaments on Saturday, Tustin defeated Bishop Amat in the final of the Clash in the Canyons tournament in Azusa. Mira Costa won the Culver City tournament. San Juan Hills won the Ocean View tournament over Downey. Quarterback Timmy Herr didn't throw an interception in two games and relied on receivers Luke Frith, Ryan Matheson and Dean Kolasinski.

Browns sign rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond after sexual assault case is dropped
Undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond signed with the Cleveland Browns on Monday, less than a week after a sexual assault case against him was dropped. Bond ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine — the ninth-fastest time among wide receivers — and was projected to be drafted in the middle rounds before he was accused of sexual assault and surrendered on April 10 in Frisco, Texas. A Collins County, Texas, grand jury determined Thursday that there was not enough evidence to indict Bond and dismissed the case. The Browns hosted Bond as one of their 30 predraft visits. Cleveland offensive coordinator Tommy Rees coached at Alabama the two seasons Bond was there, which also weighed into the decision. Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry said in a statement that the organization spent the past four months doing 'extensive research that includes but is not limited to hearing from both sides of the case and receiving the results of an independently administered polygraph test. 'Before the allegations, we also spent a great deal of time with Isaiah during the draft process on campus, at the Combine and at our facilities. His time at Alabama with Tommy Rees also weighed heavily on our assessment of his ability to operate successfully in a professional environment if brought into our organization. It is these touchpoints and more that gave us the necessary insights to make this decision.' Bond spent last season at Texas. He appeared in 41 games in college and had 99 receptions for 1,428 yards and 10 touchdowns. To make room for Bond, Cleveland waived long snapper Brent Matiscik. Unsigned second-round pick Quinshon Judkins also had a domestic violence case against him dropped Thursday in Florida, but there was no word on when the running back might possibly be signed. The Browns conclude the preseason on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. Even though there are only a couple of weeks until the Sept. 7 opener against Cincinnati, coach Kevin Stefanski said Sunday he thinks both Bond and Judkins — or any player added to the roster this week — can make up for lost time. 'That happens during the season, can happen in training camp where you got, you have to get players up to speed quickly,' Stefanski said. "That happens sometimes you get a guy on a Wednesday and they have to play on a Sunday. So that's part of our job as coaches, is to get them ready to roll.' ___ AP NFL:

Wisconsin football 2025 opponent, top Big Ten foe names starting quarterback
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day named true sophomore Julian Sayin his team's starting quarterback for the 2025 season on Monday. The 6-foot-1 pass-thrower, who is entering his second season as a member of the Buckeyes, will inherit the No. 1 quarterback responsibilities after former starter Will Howard left for the NFL after last season. The Carlsbad, California, native beat out redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz and true freshman Tavien St. Clair for the job. Ohio State becomes the second Wisconsin football opponent to name a first-year starter at quarterback entering the season, joining Alabama (Ty Simpson). Luke Fickell's group will square off against Alabama on Sept. 14, roughly one month before their Oct. 18 clash against the Buckeyes at Camp Randall Stadium. As the reigning national champions, Ohio State enters the 2025 campaign with the No. 3 position in the AP Poll. With Howard at the helm this past season, OSU won 14 games and defeated Tennessee, Oregon and Texas en route to its College Football Playoff title game triumph over Notre Dame on Jan. 20. Sayin, 247Sports' No. 1-ranked quarterback in the class of 2024, will now look to build off the momentum and lead one of college football's most prestigious programs in his first year as its starter. Sayin appeared in four games for the Buckeyes last season, including a 61-yard, one-touchdown performance against Western Michigan on Sept. 7. He originally transferred to the program from Alabama after Nick Saban's retirement in January 2024. While the output vs. the Broncos provided glimpses of terrific play, Sayin's 2024 reps were limited. He just played 27 total snaps on offense and accumulated 84 total passing yards, while Howard, the full-time starter, totaled 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns through the air. Fortunately for Sayin, the Buckeyes' offense does not lack talent. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, fresh off a stellar freshman season, is widely considered the best pass-catcher in college football. He, alongside junior Carnell Tate Jr. and Brandon Inniss, creates one of the more threatening wide receiver trios across the country. Sayin will look to impress for the Buckeyes in the program's third road tilt of the year on Oct. 18 in Madison. Julian Sayin named Ohio State's starting quarterback for season opener against Texas
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Julian Sayin will be Ohio State's starting quarterback when the No. 3 Buckeyes open the season against top-ranked Texas on Aug. 30, coach Ryan Day announced Monday. Day, who is in his seventh year leading the Buckeyes, said Sayin was more consistent in the competition with Lincoln Kienholz but there was some separation over the past week. 'It was a close competition. I think both guys we all feel confident can win a game for us. I feel like our guys are confident with both quarterbacks, I feel like we are going to need both quarterbacks,' Day said. 'Lincoln did a lot of great things, but we're going to name Julian the starter, give him the majority of the reps with the ones and go prepare to beat Texas.' Sayin is listed as a sophomore but has four years of eligibility remaining. He originally committed to Alabama as the top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2024 and was taking classes when Nick Saban retired. Sayin then entered the transfer portal last spring and came to Ohio State. He played in four games last season, including the College Football Playoff first-round game against Tennessee, and he was 5 for 12 for 84 yards and one touchdown while taking 27 snaps. 'I think earning trust is just all about consistency, who are you day in and day out, and are you making the routine plays routinely. Are you someone who the offense can count on and who your teammates can count on consistently?' Sayin said on Aug. 5 about his approach. Offensive coordinator Brian Hartline also pointed out Sayin's consistency, along with limited turnovers and emergence as a leader, in his body of work. 'The command and earning the respect of your peers. Ultimately, the locker room always knows,' Hartline said. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian tried to recruit Sayin and said after Monday's announcement that he had a ton of respect for him. 'We recruited him hard here. He was a very gifted passer, really good player. Came to camp with us, I think, two years in a row. So we got a lot of familiarity with him,' Sarkisian said. 'Very good player, elite passer, very good arm talent, very quick release, really accurate guy. Obviously, he's got great weapons around him, so he's the type of guy that can utilize those weapons in a good system. So, it poses a heck of a challenge.' Sayin won't be the most-hyped quarterback in the opener. That goes to Texas' Arch Manning, who is considered an early Heisman Trophy contender.
