Pizzerias in Miami and Miami Beach are named among best in the country

An Italian guide just named two Miami-area pizzerias among the best in the country. As part of its 50 Top Pizza USA 2025 rankings, 50 Best Pizza named La Leggenda Pizzeria in Miami Beach and 'O Munaciello, which has locations in the MiMo district and on Coral Way, as two of the best pizzerias in the United States. The restaurants were tied at no. 10 on the list The ranking wasn't exactly a surprise to either restaurant, both of which serve Neapolitan-style pies. Both have made the list before — and both thanked their customers for support. In an Instagram post, La Leggenda owner and chef Giovanni Gagliardi, who was born in Napoli, thanked his team and his wife and business partner as well as his customers for their support. 'It's a huge honor to be recognized among the best pizzerias in the U.S., but for me, it's also a reminder to keep pushing, improving, and embracing every challenge,' he wrote. 'I want to dedicate this award to all of you, our amazing and loyal customers — there are so many of you, and I'm truly grateful.' In addition to being named as one of the top pizzerias, 'O Munaciello, owned by Valentina Borgogni, was also named as the pizzeria with the best fried food in 2025. The restaurant also has a location in Florence, Italy. 'A big thank you to all of you who make us love our work more and more every day!' a post on the restaurant's Instagram said. 'It is thanks to you that we are still first best pizzeria in Florida and this year ranked 10th in the entire United States. Thanks to all our employees and the entire 'O Munaciello family around the world!' Only one other Florida pizzeria made the list: Fabrica Pizza in Tampa, which also serves Neapolitan pies. Not surprisingly New York restaurants dominated the list with 12 pizzerias in the top 50. The city is home to the no. 1 pizzeria, Una Pizza Napoletana from Anthony Mangieri. The restaurant on the Lower East Side was ranked no. 1 in 2022 and 2024. If you go La Leggenda Pizzeria: 224 Española Way, Miami Beach; 'O Munaciello: 6425 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, and 2250 Coral Way, Miami;

‘Inspiring force': Royal Canoe bassist remembered after crash in Manitoba kills 3

WINNIPEG - Staples in Winnipeg's music scene and beyond offered condolences and tributes Thursday after learning the bassist in a beloved band died in a highway crash with two others. Indie pop band Royal Canoe, on social media, said Brendan Berg died in the crash Tuesday, a day before his 43rd birthday, along with his partner, Olivia Michalczuk. Berg's death has left an 'enormous and sudden hole in the lives of everyone who knew him,' the post said. 'Over the last 15 years of cross-country tours, late studio nights — through the high highs and low lows, Brendan's relentless positivity, big smile, and considerate nature were a stabilizing and inspiring force for us,' the band posted Wednesday. 'He was always the first to volunteer his time to pick up the trailer from the shop or load gear after tour. His generosity and selflessness were legendary.' Mounties responded to the crash north of Swan River in western Manitoba, where two vehicles were found in a ditch. RCMP said a vehicle crossed the centre line and hit a vehicle parked on the edge of the road. They said a 42-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman in the parked vehicle were taken to hospital, where they died. A 29-year-old man who was a passenger in the first vehicle later died of his injuries. The 36-year-old male driver was listed in stable condition. Royal Canoe has been a Winnipeg favourite for more than a decade and has played shows with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. In 2014, the group received a Juno Award nomination for alternative album of the year for 'Today We're Believers.' The same year, they won best independent album at the Western Canadian Music Awards. The band has toured with English rockers Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club and played major festivals, including Iceland Airwaves, Bonnaroo in Tennessee and Osheaga in Montreal. 'So sad and sorry to hear this news. Much love to you all,' the Sam Roberts Band said in a response the band's announcement. Songwriter Dan Mangan called the crash 'absolutely tragic and devastating.' 'It's all so fleeting. Love you, guys,' he posted. The Park Theatre said Berg was a fixture at the popular Winnipeg live music venue. 'Whether on stage or in the crowd, he was always present, always smiling and always showing love for the music and community around him,' it said on social media. Not-for-profit promoter Manitoba Music said the deaths of Berg and Michalczuk are a 'deep loss.' 'Both have left an immeasurable mark on the music community and have meant so much to so many for their creativity, kindness and generosity.' Michalczuk, also well-known in the local music scene, was a juror for the Polaris Music Prize, an annual music award that recognizes the best full-length Canadian album. '(Michalczuk) was a strong voice in the Polaris community, having served on the jury since 2019,' said the award group. Royal Canoe said her energy and enthusiasm brought out the best in Berg. 'Her passing is equally as devastating to try to understand.' RCMP spokeswoman Michelle Lissel said charges could be laid against the lone survivor. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 3, 2025.

Beloved ‘Star Wars' character actor dies from COVID and pneumonia

Kenneth Colley, the distinguished English actor best known to audiences worldwide as Admiral Piett in the original 'Star Wars' trilogy, has died at the age of 87. His death at his home in Ashford, Kent, was confirmed by his agent, Julian Owen, who said the actor had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and eventually succumbed to pneumonia. 'He had been admitted after a fall with an injured arm, however he quickly contracted Covid which developed into pneumonia,' Owen said in a statement. 'He passed away peacefully with friends at his bedside.' Colley's portrayal of the steady and often-overwhelmed Admiral Piett in 1980's 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 1983's 'Return of the Jedi' earned him a lasting place in one of cinema's most iconic franchises. He reprised the role decades later in the 2012 animated special 'Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out.' Over a six-decade career, Colley left an indelible mark on British film, television and stage. He famously played Jesus in 'Monty Python's Life of Brian,' and appeared in a string of Ken Russell films as well as international projects like Clint Eastwood's 'Firefox' and the World War II miniseries 'War and Remembrance.' His television credits include' Peaky Blinders,' 'Pennies from Heaven' and 'The Sweeney.' 'Ken Colley was one of our finest character actors with a career spanning 60 years,' Owen said. 'Ken continually worked on stage, film and television playing a vast array of characters.'
