New Metro variant for Nashik city to be declared before polls

Time of India5 hours ago

Nashik: Nashik city is in for some exciting news! Before the upcoming civic polls in Oct or Nov, a new Metro variant is expected to be announced. The city might get either a revised Neo Metro version or a light rail Metro system, with a decision likely by July-end.
Maha Metro has shifted gears for Nashik's Metro project, exploring alternatives to the initially proposed 'Neo Metro' after receiving new directives from Centre. The authorities are now considering two Metro options that would best suit the city's needs.
In the first option, the revised version of Neo Metro has been shortlisted for the city. This includes the tyre-based articulated AC coaches with a capacity of 250 passengers.
These articulated coaches are being operated in Abu Dhabi and also in European countries. In the second option, light rail Metro has also been shortlisted, which is operational in Taiwan.
A senior Maha Metro official said they shortlisted the two Metro options after studying the urban transport systems in Abu Dhabi, Taiwan, and other European nations.
"There has been a change in the traffic pattern in the city over the last six to seven years, particularly after the Nashik airport became operational.

We recently conducted the traffic mobility survey in Nashik city to study the traffic pattern and find a new Metro variant suitable for the city. Based on this, we shortlisted these two options, which will be finalised by July-end. Thereafter, the proposal will be submitted to Centre via state govt," the senior official said.
Tarun Kapoor, an adviser to PM Narendra Modi, instructed Maha Metro to explore public transport systems in cities like Mexico during an April 18 meeting on Kumbh Mela preparations.
The goal was to find an alternative to Nashik's Neo Metro project.
Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Neo Metro project for Nashik city while presenting the Budget for the financial year 2021-22, making a provision of Rs 2,092 crore. Maha Metro proposed the rubber-tyred Neo Metro project with AC electric coaches.

As repeaters corner 7.5% quota, cracking NEET gets stiffer

Madurai/Trichy: With competition going up for seats under 7.5% quota for govt school students who appear for national eligibility-cum-entrance test every year, cracking the test and securing an MBBS seat remains a dream for most students in their first attempt. Most students scoring high remain repeaters, thanks often to private or special free coaching. Since proper training at school levels remains a challenge, educationists and teachers have called for a comprehensive plan and guidance at the school level for those who wish to tackle NEET. According to official data, in 2021, a maximum of 17 students enrolled from Madurai had got MBBS/BDS seats. However, the number dipped to nine and seven last year. In Trichy, the number of govt students qualifying has dipped. In 2023, a total of 106 qualified for counselling, of which four got seats whereas last year, six out of 134 who qualified got seats. This year, 39 students crossed the 113-mark threshold from the 209 who appeared for NEET, as of Wednesday. S Vennila Devi, Madurai district coordinator of NEET coaching, said students are able to considerably perform better due to the special coaching given by teachers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo This year, NEET topper among govt school students under 7.5% quota is Priyanka of Y Othakadai Government Model GHSS with a score of 466 marks, while for non-7.5% quota, Kannika with a score of 539, from the same school, topped. In Trichy, four students scored above 300 marks, all of whom are repeat candidates. The highest score among govt and aided school students in Trichy district this year is 221 for a first-time NEET candidate. Officials in Madurai said NEET coaching classes (online or offline) for govt school students lack the structure or regularity of a private coaching centre. "The primary focus of govt school teachers is to have students pass and score high in Class XI and XII board exams. NEET comes second. Many students start their NEET preparation properly only when Class XII board exams end," said the headmaster of a govt higher secondary school, who did not wish to be named. R Murali, secretary, Save Higher Education Movement, Tamil Nadu, pointed out that while free coaching introduced in govt schools is helpful for those from poor backgrounds, it creates division. "Apart from the rural and urban divide, govt school teachers lack the necessary training to provide guidance and prepare students for tackling competitive exams like NEET through their regular classroom teaching. If the govt is genuinely interested in helping govt school students crack NEET, it should appoint efficient and qualified teachers for it," he said. Officials in Trichy said the govt has not yet announced the cut-off for 7.5% horizontal reservation for govt school students this year. "The counselling process should be more lenient this year, as the overall cut-off is lower due to the difficulty level of the exam," a district education official said. "The govt is planning to introduce weekly coaching classes starting July, with one centre in each of the blocks. Repeaters tending to perform better shows that with practice it gets better," the official added.

AP: Officials told to plug loopholes used for tax evasion

Vijayawada, June 18 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has made it clear that evading taxes while doing business in the state would no longer be tolerated. He directed officials to close all loopholes that enable tax evasion and warned that stringent action would be taken against those who attempt to exploit weaknesses in the system to harm government revenues. The Chief Minister held a meeting in the Secretariat at Amaravati near here with the officials and reviewed the tax collection and issued key directives regarding revenue targets. He also pointed out that traders and taxpayers should not be subjected to harassment during tax collection and instructed that efforts must be made to raise awareness among them about tax obligations. The Chief Minister advised officials to analyze tax payment data dating back to 2017 and said the government would reconsider the incentives currently being offered to tax evaders. He also stated that public opinion would be gathered regarding the tax collection process by government departments, stressing that public satisfaction is essential for the coalition government. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the estimated revenue for the 2025–26 financial year stands at Rs 1.24 lakh crore. Naidu noted that increased revenues would enable the government to enhance both development and welfare efforts. In a video conference with Joint Commissioners from various districts, the Chief Minister discussed GST and commercial tax collections across the state. He congratulated Joint Commissioners from Chittoor, Kurnool, Kakinada, Anantapur, and Nellore districts for achieving better tax collection results. Naidu acknowledged that the state is currently facing financial difficulties and said these issues can be resolved only by correcting the missteps taken by the previous government. Otherwise, he cautioned, the state's finances would remain in perpetual distress. He stressed the importance of cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada contributing more significantly to the state's revenues. Officials informed the Chief Minister that compared to the previous year, revenue collections have increased. In the Stamps and Registrations Department, collections stood at Rs 906.12 crore in April 2025 and Rs 916 crore in May. For the same period last year, collections were Rs 663.29 crore in April and Rs 583 crore in May. They also reported a steady rise in GST revenue and clarified that GST and commercial tax collections have grown by 5.71 percent. The department has set a target of Rs 43,020 crore for GST and commercial tax revenue for the current financial year. The Chief Minister directed officials to strengthen the excise system through the new liquor policy. Officials explained that the new policy is expected to generate an additional Rs 2,432 crore in revenue for the state. Naidu also instructed officials to integrate satellite data in the Mines Department to improve outcomes. He advised the use of technology to gather accurate data on minerals and sand excavation and to boost revenue. This, he said, could potentially increase income by 30 to 40 percent. UNI DP SS

High court denies bail in Rs 23cr scam over Hisar Lok Sabha ticket

Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana high court declined the anticipatory bail plea of one of the accused in the high-profile Rs 23-crore cheating case involving alleged allurement sought in the name of the Prime Minister and the home minister to secure Lok Sabha ticket from Hisar seat. Denying bail to the petitioner, Justice N S Shekhawat of the HC observed in the detailed order released last week: "Two cheques of Rs 12 crores and 10 crores were taken from the complainant, which are yet to be recovered. Apart from that, the custodial interrogation of the petitioner would be required to know the names of others involved in the crime as well as to unearth the modus operandi adopted by the accused in the present case. " In this case, one Parveen Godara, a BJP functionary of Hansi town in the Hisar district of Haryana, was defrauded by the accused on the promise of getting him a ticket from Hisar for the 2024 parliamentary election for Rs 23 crore, out of which he paid around Rs 63 lakh. Based on his complaint, an FIR was registered at the city police station in Hansi on April 22, 2025. According to the complaint, the accused, including Kapil Dev Aggarwal, his son Harsh Aggarwal, Harpal Singh, and Ashish Pathak, lured the complainant by showcasing a fake partnership in Indus Airways and further extending the bait of a political ticket from Hisar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo T he complainant stated that he was told that part of the Rs 23 crore would go directly to the home ministry and the party office. Trusting these claims, he paid Rs 63.88 lakh via cash and bank transfers and handed over post-dated cheques amounting to Rs 22 crore as security. However, after being informed that he was not selected as a candidate, the complainant was allegedly threatened and told to forget about the money. However, while seeking bail in the case, the petitioner and one of the accused, Harpal Singh, alleged that the complainant, who held various posts in BJP-ruled Haryana, managed to get a false FIR registered against the petitioner and his co-accused. Opposing the bail plea, the state govt submitted that it was established from the screenshots and chats, that Kapil Dev Aggarwal and Ashish Pathak had received money from the complainant.
