‘If anyone has a problem, they need to learn to deal with it': Uddhav Thackeray on alliance with Raj

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray Sunday addressed the political buzz surrounding his recent show of unity with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, stating that people who have a problem with the two cousins coming together need to learn to deal with it. He also cryptically remarked that their coming together on the issue of Marathi should not be seen through a political prism.
'If someone has a problem with the two of us brothers coming together, they should deal with their discomfort. Together, we will work for Maharashtra's betterment and take the right decisions at the right time,' Uddhav Thackeray said in the second part of his interview with his party's newspaper, Saamana.
On July 5, 2025, Uddhav shared the stage with his cousin Raj for the first time in 20 years. They held a victory rally in Mumbai over the Maharashtra government's U-turn on introducing Hindi as a third language in primary schools.
When asked directly about discussions with Raj regarding a political alliance, Uddhav said,'Yes, we have spoken. The very fact that we have come together after 20 years is significant. Sometimes, unity in appearance says more than a thousand words.'
He, however, added, 'Not everything needs to be turned into a political arrangement. But for the sake of the Marathi language, identity, and pride, I am ready to do whatever it takes.'
On the Hindi-Marathi language issue, Thackeray stated that while he is not opposed to Hindi, he would stand up against any injustice perpetrated against the Marathi language.
'The Marathi community has a distinct character. We are not aggressive, not rebellious, and we don't commit injustice against others. But we don't tolerate injustice either. Patience has its limits. The Marathi community has risen again, just like during the Samyukta Maharashtra movement,' he said.
Dismissing claims that the Shiv Sena is anti-Hindi, Thackeray said, 'We are not against the Hindi language. My grandfather always encouraged learning multiple languages but never by force. I have spoken in Hindi in front of my uncle, and Sanjay Raut speaks Hindi in Parliament. The issue is not Hindi , the issue is its imposition.'
On the broader narrative of a Maharashtra vs. other states conflict, Thackeray was quick to blame the BJP for stirring tensions.
'There is no Maharashtra versus other states conflict, but the BJP is trying to create one. We don't hate any language. We are Marathi in Maharashtra, and when we think of the nation, we are Hindus and united.'
He also stated that his reconciliation with his once estranged cousin had an impact on the state's polity.
'After 20 years, we came together on the Marathi issue. This was welcomed not just by Marathi people, but also by non-Marathis and even Muslims. Some may not like it; that is their issue. But because of this protest, the Central government had to withdraw its Hindi language enforcement plan,' he said.

DU releases cut-off scores for all course-college combinations for first time since 2021

In a step toward restoring transparency in undergraduate admissions, Delhi University (DU) on Sunday publicly released detailed cut-off scores for all of its 1,528 course-college combinations — the first such disclosure since 2021. The 89-page document has been published on the varsity's website. The data, based on scores from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2025, spans a vast range: from a peak of 950 out of 1,000 for coveted courses at top-tier colleges to a low of 65 for lesser-demanded programmes. The highest cut-offs were seen at DU's most sought-after colleges. Hindu College set the bar with a score of 950 for its BA (Honours) in Political Science, followed by 936 for its BA programme in History and Political Science. St Stephen's College, Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, and Shri Ram College of Commerce also featured among those with the top cut-offs. At the other end of the spectrum were language programmes, where demand has historically been lower. The BA (Honours) Hindi course at Mata Sundari College for Women recorded a cut-off of just 65, while Zakir Hussain Delhi College's Urdu Honours course closed at 111. For the past three years, applicants could only view cut-offs relevant to their chosen preferences via the university's Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) dashboard. The broader picture — crucial for gauging competitiveness across courses and institutions – remained unclear. This year, DU received 2.39 lakh completed applications in the second phase of its admissions cycle, competing for 71,642 seats across 79 undergraduate programmes in 69 colleges and departments. On Saturday, the university announced that it had made 93,166 seat allocations. Delhi continued to dominate the applicant pool with 77,900 candidates, followed by Uttar Pradesh (54,278), Haryana (24,206), and Bihar (17,173). These four states together accounted for nearly 72 per cent of all applications. By contrast, interest from the country's peripheral regions remained limited — with just 48 applicants from Goa, 61 from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and 65 from Mizoram. Students have until July 21 to accept their allotted seats, after which colleges will have a day to approve applications. The deadline for fee payment is July 23.

Parliament Monsoon Session Day 1: Lok Sabha adjourned twice amid Oppn protests

Lok Sabha witnessed noisy protests from the Opposition over various issues and a demand for discussion on Operation Sindoor, leading to at least two adjournments of the House Monday, the first day of the Monsoon Session. This came despite an appeal from Speaker Om Birla to bust the perception that disruptions happen in the House on the first day of any Parliament session, and assurances from the government that it was ready to discuss and reply to all issues. As the House met on the first day of the Monsoon session, members paid tribute to eight former MPs who passed away recently. The House also paid tributes to those who were killed in the terror attack at Pahalgam on April 22, and those killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Speaker Om Birla also congratulated Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on his successful space mission, and said the House would also have a detailed discussion on the space mission during the session. When Birla called for the Question Hour, Opposition members stood up, and shouted slogans demanding discussion on various issues. 'This is Question Hour, and it's my request that we should try to maintain high parliamentary standards, and we should bust this myth that disruptions happen in the House on the first day of the House. Our efforts should be to express the hopes and expectations of the people of the country,' the Speaker said. The Speaker assured the Opposition that sufficient time would be allocated to all members for discussion. As the Opposition members continued sloganeering, the Speaker said, 'You want discussion on Operation Sindoor… Discussion will happen after Question Hour.' Birla said that the government would address every issue, and that sloganeering inside the House was inappropriate. 'Go outside the House for sloganeering,' he said. The Lok Sabha Speaker also said the government is ready to reply to all issues. But when the Opposition members continued to shout slogans despite assurances, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon. The Opposition members continued their protest when House proceedings resumed. Amidst the sloganeering, BJP leader Baijayant Panda presented the report (in both Hindi and English) of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025. Panda also tabled a copy of the record of evidence given before the Select Committee on the Income-Tax Bill, 2025. Amid the disruptions, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju intervened and asked if there would be a ruckus in the House, then how the discussion would happen. Rijiju said the ruckus, and sloganeering were not appropriate. 'The government is ready for discussion,' Rijiju said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, too, assured members that the government was ready for discussion on every matter. While addressing the Lok Sabha as the Chair, Jagdambika Pal adjourned the House till 2 pm. Lalmani is an Assistant Editor with The Indian Express, and is based in New Delhi.
