Medical staff loses Rs 20 lakh in online fraud
A case has been booked under Sections 318 (4) of the BNS Act and 66D of the IT Act at the cyber police station here, following an FIR by the victim on Friday. Police are investigating the case to identify the fraudulent trading company and try to recovery the money. A police officer said they are also trying to freeze the bank accounts of the firms, suspecting their involvement in other online frauds.
Police added that at least four bank accounts were involved in the case and verification was on to establish the state of those accounts.
Last month, the victim received a call on a social media platform and received a link which appeared to be from a popular online trading firm. The caller assured him of getting a good profit from his investment. Initially he received a profitable return, which encouraged him to invest more.
From June 10 to July 11, he invested over Rs 22.50 lakh and transferred the money to four accounts of different banks as per the direction of the caller.
Recently, he tried withdrawing Rs 80,000 bonus towards his investment, as assured by the caller but he could neither access the funds nor the bank accounts.
The scammers had assured to give him Rs 3 lakh against an investment of Rs 1 lakh.
"We have repeatedly urged people not to invest their money on any online trading firm without proper verification. Despite this, people continue to fall prey to cybercriminals. If anyone identifies himself as an officer of TRAI or CBI and starts threatening you, immediately bring it to the police's notice," Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said.

4,000+ motorists speeding on Coastal Rd challaned this year
Mumbai: More than 4,000 motorists were challaned by Mumbai traffic police for speeding on the Coastal Road so far this year, with fines issued running up to Rs 82 lakh. Around 1,500 challans have been cleared and Rs 31 lakh in fines paid by offenders so far, the police said. Land fraud racket: 5 arrested with Rs 32L cash, 5 vehicles
1 2 Mohali: Mohali police have dismantled a land fraud syndicate, arresting five key members and seizing Rs 32.5 lakh in cash along with five vehicles used in the scam. Two other accused remain at large, with police hot on their trail. The arrested individuals were Avtar Singh alias Bahadur Singh (Dayalpur village, now in Sante Majra Colony, Kharar), Jagdish Kumar alias Jeet Singh (Kalahehri village, Ropar), Jagtar Singh alias Satnam Singh (Badeshah Kalan, Fatehgarh Sahib; now in Sunder Nagar, Morinda), Bhupesh Mehta (Morinda), Gurbaj Singh alias Gurbhej Singh (Paprali village, Ropar). Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrests man with 2 kg ambergris
The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police on Wednesday arrested a man and seized 2 kg ambergris worth around Rs 2 crore from him. The arrested man has been identified as Raju alias Rajesh Punamchand Marwadi, 43, resident of Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad City and originally from Bikaner in Rajasthan. The arrest was made during a raid conducted by police at Meghaninagar in Ahmedabad based on a tip-off. Police said they are on the look out for two persons, Ganesh Bachhraj Marwadi of Mumbai, who allegedly provided the ambergris to Marwadi.
