Sophisticated smuggling network busted near Polokwane weighbridge

The Citizen06-06-2025
POLOKWANE – Limpopo police have dismantled one of the most sophisticated cross-border smuggling syndicates operating between South Africa and Malawi, recovering stolen goods worth more than R3m.
The breakthrough came in the early hours of Thursday morning (June 5) when the Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Task Team, assisted by Tshimollo Security and Investigation and Shadow Secure Technology, intercepted a Scania truck pulling superlink trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge.
The vehicle was travelling from Cape Town to Malawi via the Beitbridge Border Post.
Following an 18-hour joint operation, officers recovered:
Chopped parts of a Ford Ranger reported stolen in Nyanga, including the engine, dashboard, radiator, differential, and steering wheel.
60 disassembled motorcycles concealed in drums and containers, reported stolen from multiple Western Cape police stations including Bellville, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Milnerton, Sea Point and Athlone.
Stolen electronics, including plasma TVs, sound systems, solar tower batteries, and mobile phones.
The Scania truck and trailers used in the smuggling operation.
Four male suspects, all foreign nationals aged between 37 and 50, were arrested and are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday (June 9) on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods.
The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the operation:
'This breakthrough represents a major victory against sophisticated criminal networks exploiting our borders. The collaboration between our task team and private partners shows the power of coordinated enforcement. We will continue to target these syndicates until they are dismantled completely.'

Suspect arrested after murder of partner and rape of stepdaughter

A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 36-year-old partner and raping his 16-year-old stepdaughter in Vhembe District, Limpopo. The suspect allegedly murdered the woman and disposed of her body in a pit toilet at a local school. He remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to face rape and murder charges. Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe expressed outrage at the incident, particularly during Women's Month. 'This crime represents the worst of gender-based violence. A man who was supposed to protect his family instead became their worst nightmare. That he would murder a woman and rape her teenage daughter shows the depths of depravity we are fighting,' said Hadebe. Police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said on Sunday at about 2am the suspect allegedly woke the teenager, claiming they needed to search for her mother at taverns in Mundzedzi village. The woman was last seen on Saturday at a local tavern. Ledwaba said after failing to locate the mother, the suspect led the minor to bushes next to the cemetery in Vleifontein where he allegedly raped her. 'The suspect instructed the traumatised teenager to return home. The victim immediately reported the rape to a community member, who contacted police,' he said. The man was arrested after a case of rape was opened and a manhunt launched. Ledwaba said during questioning on Monday, investigators discovered the suspect had allegedly murdered the missing woman and disposed of her body in a pit toilet at a school. 'The body was retrieved with assistance from relevant stakeholders, and the suspect faces an additional charge of murder,' he said. TimesLIVE

Limpopo police constable arrested for culpable homicide after fatal incident involving child

A Limpopo Police Constable faces serious charges after his arrest for culpable homicide and allegedly driving a state vehicle under the influence. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the 36-year-old Constable, stationed at Motetema Police Station in Sekhukhune District, allegedly drove a state vehicle under the influence and struck an 8-year-old boy in the Hlogotlou policing area on August 8 at approximately 19:15. 'It is reported that a Police Constable was driving a state vehicle when he allegedly knocked down an eight years 8-year-old child along the road at Mogaung village, heading in the direction.' Emergency medical services personnel were called to the scene, but the victim succumbed to his injuries. He added that preliminary investigations suggest the Constable was driving under the influence of a substance during the incident, and that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified to conduct further investigations. The Constable is set to appear before Nebo Magistrate's Court on August 11, facing charges of culpable homicide and alleged driving under the influence of alcohol. Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, strongly welcomed the arrest, emphasising the department's commitment to accountability and justice. "The police are expected to conduct themselves in terms of the SAPS Code of Ethics as well as the Code of Conduct at all material times." The Star [email protected]
