Gurgaon civic body forms cell for better execution, long-term planning of sewerage operations
'The cell aims to ensure transparency, timely execution, and long-term planning for sewerage operations,' a spokesperson for the municipal corporation said.
The Sewerage Management Cell will oversee regular monitoring of sewerage operations, ensure timely payment of related bills, and address operational issues. It is also tasked with planning for future needs, executing tender processes, and identifying suitable land for new sewerage projects, the spokesperson added.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya directed all civic body officials and staff to fully cooperate with the cell to make the sewerage system efficient, sustainable, and citizen-friendly.
As per orders issued on Monday, Additional Municipal Commissioner Yash Jaluka will serve as the nodal officer, with Chief Engineer Vijay Dhaka appointed a member secretary. The cell includes Chief Town Planner Sanjeev Mann, all executive engineers, and Tehsildar Harikesh Gupta as members. Assistant Engineer Manoj Ahlawat will assist the nodal officer alongside his existing duties.
Earlier this month, under a special drive to lock and secure open manholes, the municipal corporation had replaced damaged as well as open manholes at 319 locations across all city wards.
The drive came against the backdrop of the death of Shailendra, 27, an autorickshaw driver who fell into an open manhole near Shishpal Vihar Gate 2 and drowned.
Gurgaon was ranked the seventh cleanest city in Haryana and 41st nationally in the Swachh Survekshan results for 2024-25, announced last week.
Per the survey, the city holds a water+ certification in the open defecation-free category, indicating advanced wastewater and sewage treatment and reuse systems that meet environmental standards.
However, it has not achieved a garbage-free city star rating under comprehensive waste management that includes assessment of segregation, processing, and elimination of open dumping.

Police impound 102 heavy vehicles after fatal accident
Surat: After a series of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, Surat police have launched a crackdown on rash and illegal movement of commercial vehicles in the city. In the past two days, 102 dumpers, concrete mixer trucks, and other heavy vehicles have been detained. The drive began after a security supervisor was killed by a concrete mixer truck near Rahul Raj Mall on Tuesday morning. Surat police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut personally inspected a ground near Umra police station where the seized vehicles were lined up, and summoned their owners and drivers. According to police, the two-day operation led to the seizure of 28 dumpers, 15 concrete mixer trucks, 19 trucks, 17 tempos, and 8 heavy vehicles carrying construction material. These vehicles were found violating the police commissioner's notification that bans the entry of heavy commercial vehicles into city limits between 8am to 1pm and 5pm to 10pm. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone 4) Vijay Singh Gurjar said that all zonal DCPs and the traffic department have been instructed to continue the drive and intensify checks on commercial vehicles in the coming days. "Traffic teams will increase surveillance and even use drones to track rash drivers," Gurjar said. "Control room officials will alert traffic teams immediately if they spot any such vehicles through the city's CCTV network." As complaints about rash driving by BRTS and city bus drivers rise, police will meet Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials to prepare a plan to control speed and improve driver discipline, especially at major junctions and crossroads. Both the owners and drivers of the 102 vehicles were booked for breaching the notification and under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Gujarat police's state monitoring cell (SMC) arrested Bipin Darji — purported to be the partner of Bharat alias Bobby Patel, the 'Dingucha kingpin' allegedly linked to the tragic deaths of a Gujarati family on the US-Canada border in 2022 — from Vijapur in Mehsana. Police say he was part of the network allegedly led by Bobby Patel that promised people with dreams of settling in the US, illegal passage through Canada and Mexico. "Darji worked as a field agent in Mehsana region and was responsible for luring clients desperate to reach the US, collecting their documents, arranging fake passports and visas, and coordinating payment logistics with Bobby Patel and the network of domestic and international illegal immigration agents," said a police officer close to the case. DIG (SMC) Nirlipt Rai said SMC launched an investigation after an FIR was registered under several sections of the IPC related to cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy as well as for violations of the Indian Passport Act at Sola High Court police station in 2022. He confessed to his role in the transnational racket. Darji admitted to facilitating the movement of individuals using forged documents and coordinating with international agents," said police. "During interrogation, Darji confessed to being Bobby Patel's partner in the illegal immigration racket and admitted he had been in hiding since the case was filed. Investigations revealed that Bobby Patel had obtained 28 legally issued passports by altering minor details, some even containing biometric data, through various passport offices in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. These multiple passports allowed him to leave and re-enter India undetected. He was arrested by the SMC in Dec 2022 from Bhadaj area of Ahmedabad when he allegedly arrived to meet his ailing partner. "He is suspected of having helped 1,500 people from North Gujarat obtain fake passports. His name cropped up in the investigation into the IELTS paper scam in North Gujarat. We also suspect Bharat Patel had sent six people from North Gujarat to the US. The six had to be rescued by the US authorities after their boat capsized and they almost drowned while illegally crossing the St Regis river on the Canada-US border," said an officer. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Bobby Patel early this July under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in connection with a human trafficking case. The ED initiated its investigation based on the FIR registered by Sola High Court police station, which accused Patel and others of illegally sending Indian citizens abroad since 2015. The investigation revealed that Bobby Patel and his associates allegedly charged Rs 60 lakh to Rs 75 lakh for one passenger, Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.25 crore for a couple, and Rs 1.25 crore to Rs 1.75 crore for families with children. Even as further probe is underway, an officer close to the investigation said, "Other accused related to the case still at large include Munna Khatri, reportedly residing in Canada, and Munna Maken, currently in the US, for whom extradition procedures are ongoing." Gurugram launches drive against stray cattle
The Hindu Bureau GURUGRAM The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on Friday launched a special campaign to address the growing issue of stray cattle in the city. Cattle roaming on roads, streets, and markets are being rounded up and sent to cow shelters as part of the drive. The initiative follows an intensive cleanliness campaign that began on July 28, after a high-level meeting chaired by Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Local Bodies Department, Vikas Gupta, to review Gurugram's sanitation measures. On the first day of the stray cattle drive, MCG teams conducted inspections in areas such as Sector-15 Part-2, DLF Phase-5, and Sector-42. A total of seven animals were caught – two from Sector-15 Part-2, three from DLF Phase-5, and two from Sector-42 – and transported to MCG-run cow shelters. MCG Joint Commissioner (Swachh Bharat Mission) Preetpal Singh said six agencies appointed by the corporation were fined a total of ₹83,000 for negligence in catching stray cattle and failing to resolve public complaints. Penalties included ₹9,000 on Animal Sympathy Organisation, ₹28,000 on R S Enterprises, ₹3,000 on Scorpion Buildtech, and ₹19,000 on Jeev Daya Social Welfare Society. All agencies have been issued notices and warned to prioritise animal-related complaints. MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the campaign was launched in response to persistent complaints from citizens about stray cattle. He added that the drive will continue through the month and will cover all city wards. Residents have been urged to report sightings on the helpline 1800-180-1817. The special drive was initiated after residents, including prominent citizens, took to social media to criticise the MCG for the civic mess.
