Indonesia to cut tariffs, non-tariff barriers in US trade deal, Money News

AsiaOne23-07-2025
WASHINGTON — Indonesia has agreed to eliminate tariffs on more than 99 per cent of US goods and scrap all non-tariff barriers facing American firms, while the US will drop threatened tariffs on Indonesian products to 19 per cent from 32 per cent, the two countries said on Tuesday (July 22).
Trump hailed the deal, which he first announced on July 15, in a posting on his Truth Social media platform, calling it a "huge win for our Automakers, Tech Companies, Workers, Farmers, Ranchers, and Manufacturers".
Details of a framework for the accord were released in a joint statement by both countries, and a fact sheet issued by the White House. They said negotiators for both countries would finalize the actual agreement in coming weeks.
"Today, the United States of America and the Republic of Indonesia agreed to a framework for negotiating an agreement on reciprocal trade to strengthen our bilateral economic relationship, which will provide both countries' exporters unprecedented access to each other's markets," the statement said.
The Indonesia deal is among only a handful reached so far by the Trump administration ahead of an Aug 1 deadline when higher tariffs are due to kick in.
The US tariff rate on Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, matches the 19 per cent announced for the Philippines earlier on Tuesday. Vietnam's tariff rate has been set at 20 per cent.
Under the agreement, Indonesia will immediately drop its plans to levy tariffs on internet data flows and it agreed to support renewal of a longstanding World Trade Organisation moratorium on e-commerce duties, a senior Trump administration official told reporters on a conference call.
Indonesia also will remove recently enacted pre-shipment inspections and verifications of US exports that have posed problems for US agricultural exports and contributed to a growing US farm trade deficit, the official said.
The official, who was not authorised to speak publicly, said the agreement could help restore the surplus in agricultural goods that the United States once had with Indonesia, until it implemented the pre-shipment requirements.
In a win for US automakers, the official said Indonesia has agreed to accept US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for vehicles exported from the United States to the growing country of 280 million people.
Indonesia also has agreed to remove export restrictions on industrial commodities, including critical minerals, the joint statement said. The US official said it would also remove local content requirements for products using these commodities that were shipped to the United States.
The joint statement said the US would reduce the reciprocal tariff rate to 19 per cent, and "may also identify certain commodities that are not naturally available or domestically produced in the United States for a further reduction in the reciprocal tariff rate". No further details were provided.
The two countries said they would negotiate rules of origin to ensure the benefits of the deal accrue mainly to the US and Indonesia, not third countries.
They said Indonesia would work to address barriers for US goods, including through the removal of import restrictions and licensing requirements on US remanufactured goods or parts.
Indonesia also agreed to join the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity and take actions to address global excess capacity in the steel sector.

In Kyiv, disheartened Ukrainians wary ahead of Trump-Putin summit

REUTERS/Gleb Garanich KYIV - As President Donald Trump prepared to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, Ukrainians were watching warily, fearful the U.S. leader could sell Kyiv out in his bid for a quick deal with Moscow. The American leader, who has set his sights on securing a truce in Russia's 3-1/2-year-old war in Ukraine, agreed last week to hold the first U.S.-Russian summit since 2021, abruptly ending Western attempts to isolate the Kremlin leader. Polls by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology show Ukrainians overwhelmingly want a negotiated settlement to end the fighting, but would also oppose any truce secured with crushing concessions. Half a dozen Ukrainians interviewed by Reuters on Kyiv's central square said they were not optimistic ahead of the summit. Some said they worried that Kyiv's interests would not be taken into account. "I don't trust Trump. He says one thing today, another tomorrow. The day after tomorrow – another thing, in five days – something else. Therefore, I have no faith in him," 47-year-old accountant Anna Sherstniova said. Tetiana Harkavenko, a 65-year-old cleaner, predicted the fighting would rage on after the summit. "Nothing good will happen there, because war is war, it will not end. The territories - we're not going to give anything to anyone." Trump has said any deal to end the war will require territorial concessions by both sides, and that he would like to see a follow-up meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Taiwan lifts 2025 growth forecast, defying US tariff worries

[TAIPEI] Taiwan raised its estimate for growth in 2025, easing some concern over the impact of US duties on an economy that has roared on tech exports. Gross domestic product is set to expand 4.45 per cent this year, the statistics bureau in Taipei said in a statement on Friday (Aug 15) – its first estimate since the Trump administration hit the archipelago's shipments with 20 per cent tariffs. The new figure is up from the 3.1 per cent predicted in May. In a sign the government is confident demand for Taiwan's products will persist, the bureau predicted exports will rise 24.04 per cent this year, up from the previous call of 8.99 per cent. Taiwan's economy has done well because its tech exports have been in great demand during the AI boom and companies front-loaded purchases before tariffs landed. The government in Taipei has said the 20 per cent tariff level is temporary and that it will continue negotiating with the US to get a better deal. In its first forecast for next year, the statistics bureau said GDP is seen expanding by 2.81 per cent. The prediction for 2025 consumer price index was trimmed to 1.76 per cent, from 1.88 per cent. The tariff blow could ultimately be smaller than feared for Taiwan. President Donald Trump has also said he planned to impose a 100 per cent levy on semiconductor imports but that firms investing in the US would be exempt. A Taiwanese official said earlier that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing– the self-ruled archipelago's largest company and a key supplier of advanced chips to Nvidia and Apple – shouldn't be subject to those duties because it has plants in the US. This would allow them to tap new revenue streams without disrupting their core business.
