PS5 State Of Play: Everything announced from Nioh 3 to Pragmata

Metroa day ago

Sony's State Of Play may have lacked first-party games but there were plenty of surprises, between a new Lumines and a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics.
While State Of Play presentations are usually headlined by a first-party title from Sony, the company's latest showcase took a different approach.
Some titles from PlayStation Studios got a mention, between a brief look at Ghost of Yōtei and new levels in Astro Bot, but the big closing moment belonged to Sony's collaboration with Guilty Gear creators Arc System Works on a new Marvel fighting game.
While it is technically a PlayStation Studios production, it's not exactly the new God Of War spin-off some expected. Elsewhere, the other big reveal was perhaps the new James Bond game from Hitman developer IO Interactive, with a youthful, fresh-faced 007.
It may have lacked a surprise from one of Sony's big names, but the rest of the presentation was filled with some pretty great announcements. You can check out a rundown of the highlights below.

The creators behind Tetris Effect and Rez Infinite opened the show with another entry in the Lumines puzzle game series, titled Lumines Arise. The game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC in autumn 2025, with optional PSVR2 and PC VR support.
A free single-player and multiplayer demo is planned for the summer. This is the first entry in the series since 2018's Lumines Remastered, which was also developed by Enhance Games.
Capcom's sci-fi action title was originally unveiled back in 2020, but it was delayed indefinitely in 2023. Two years later, however, and it's reappeared in pretty promising shape.
The gameplay looks somewhere between Vanquish and Astral Chain, with a promised 'two-in-one twist of action and strategy' as a young girl named Dianna sits on your back and throws out assist attacks during battles. It's set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2026.
Japanese developer Goichi Suda, aka Suda51, revealed his new 'ultra-violent science-fiction' game, Romeo Is A Dead Man. The opening of the trailer sports a cel-shaded comic book style, but the gameplay appears to be more visually grounded, albeit with the bloody spectacle you'd expect from the creator of No More Heroes.
You play as Romeo Stargazer, an FBI investigator who hunts wanted criminals across space. The game is set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5.
Konami's next mainline instalment in the Silent Hill franchise, Silent Hill f, received a creepy new trailer, which showed off some of the spectacularly messed up monster designs.
The trailer also confirmed a September 25, 2025 release date across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. It might be just before the Halloween season, but this looks set to haunt you for weeks.
This long-rumoured remaster was finally revealed, with the name of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. This is a remaster of the original PlayStation game from 1997, which wasn't released in Europe until the 2007 PSP port, The War Of The Lions.
This includes the original game with the War Of The Lions translation, along with a new enhanced version with fully voiced dialogue, a renewed interface, and other improvements. It's set to be released on September 30, 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The Bloodstained saga continues with this new 2.5D side-scrolling action role-player, which is set in the same world as Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night.
The new Ethereal Castle map is described as being the largest yet, and the gameplay hinges around swapping between the two protagonists, Alex and Leo. While you directly control one, the other assists in combat, and you can switch between the two at the press of a button.
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5.
Digital Eclipse, the studio known for retro gaming compilations like Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, are back with a new Mortal Kombat retrospective.
The collection boasts over 20 different playable versions of the classic games, across arcade, console, and handheld entries. A bunch of these titles come with modern enhancements too, including online play with rollback netcode. It's set to be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC in 2025.
One of the only VR games at the showcase was Thief VR: Legacy Of Shadow, which is set to launch across PSVR2, PC VR, and Meta Quest next year.
This is the first Thief game in over a decade, and it comes with a new protagonist called Magpie, who is described a 'cunning thief orphaned by Northcrest's brutality and shaped by the streets'. It's being developed by Vertigo Games and Maze Theory, in collaboration with Eidos-Montreal.
Five years after the last instalment, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja officially announced Nioh 3 and there's a limited time demo available right now until June 18 on PlayStation 5. More Trending
This sequel, which is slated for next year, features two combat styles between Samurai and Ninja. The former is similar to the Nioh combat seen in past games, while the Ninja style serves up quick movements, aerial actions, Ninjitsu techniques, and other abilities.
While these were the main highlights, there were several other smaller announcements, with new trailers for Sea Of Thieves-like Sea Remnants, Tides Of Tomorrow from the creators of Road 96, and Sword Of The Sea from the team behind The Pathless.
There were release dates for several indie titles too, with Baby Steps slated for September 8, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound arriving on July 31, and survival climber Cairn planned for November 5, with a demo available now.
As for Ghost of Yōtei, Sony announced it will offer a gameplay deep dive on the sequel in July, ahead of its launch on October 2, 2025.

Dune Awakening swamped by 100,000 early access players ahead of launch

Dune Awakening isn't technically out yet, but that hasn't stopped almost 100,000 eager players from jumping into the massively multiplayer online game during its early access period. Officially launching on 10 June, Dune Awakening has you exploring the sandy wilderness of Arrakis. Developed by Funcom, creators of Conan: Exiles, the MMO allows players to fully immerse themselves in Frank Herbert's revived and genre-defining science-fiction universe. Dune Awakening is set to launch on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, and sees players assume the role of The Sleeper, a jobbing freelancer set loose in the desert world of Arrakis to form alliances, join guilds, fight for control of regions, and avoid the sci-fi series' behemoth sandworms. First teased in 2023, Dune Awakening is finally approaching a full release. Players who paid extra can jump into the game early, and almost 100,000 players have joined, leading to server overloads and connection problems – and a lot of negative Steam reviews. Ready to get sand in your stillsuit? Here's everything we know about Dune Awakening so far. Dune Awakening release date Dune Awakening launches on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S and X on Tuesday, 10 June. Players who pre-ordered Dune Awakening and paid for advanced access can start playing now, ahead of the game's full release. What is Dune Awakening about? While stylistically similar to the most recent Dune movies, Dune Awakening draws as much from the classic Frank Herbert books as it does the recent Timothée Chalamet-fronted blockbusters. Pitting you as a lone wanderer in the desert world of Arrakis, Dune Awakening is a mixture of open-world survival and multiplayer combat. Starting out with nothing but a scrap knife, you'll attack enemy camps to loot the materials needed to expand your armoury, build new tools, vehicles and weapons, and expand your guild's camp to grow your power and influence. The IMAX-scale of Arrakis can also be felt in the giant sandstorms that rage across the game world, as well as those iconic sandworms – skyscraper-sized monsters that burst from the dunes and must be avoided at all costs.

PlayStation State of Play: packed with games, but lacking real star power

Gaming New Bond and old Mortal Kombat made for a serviceable showing, but nothing more Skip 8 photos in the image carousel and continue reading You might well disagree with our assessment of last night's State of Play, the latest in a series of Sony livestreams in which upcoming games strut around to catch your eye. Whether you do or not probably depends on how much you love James Bond, samurai swords and fighting games. If you do like those things, you sound pretty hard, so we're happy to just defer to whatever you think and then buy you a new pint. Sorry. Have a good evening. Advertisement - Page continues below To us, though, it felt like a decent showing that lacked a real hype machine. There was a big new IP reveal in the form of 007 First Light , some admirable screen time given to more niche propositions like Baby Steps and Grasshopper Manufacture's Romeo is a Dead Man , and an exciting reveal from Nioh 3 . Still, if you find yourself watching an extended reveal of an official PlayStation fightstick at one of these livestreams, a nagging sense emerges that this probably isn't one for the ages. You might like No, fair enough. 007 First Light has a bit of triple-A glitz and glamour about it. And handing that franchise over to Io Interactive, the Danish studio behind the Hitman games, makes all the sense in the world. It was probably the biggest moment of the show, but seeing James Bond as a young floppy haired man who might easily have walked on from an Uncharted game left us neither particularly shaken nor stirred. Maybe we're just being harsh because of what they've done to Thief . Advertisement - Page continues below You'll want to take a seat: they've turned it into a VR game. No disrespect to the project or the platform, but this is a seriously respected series of immersive sims from the late Nineties to early Noughties we're talking about. The 2014 reboot suffered for having been pushed through the square hole of triple-A blockbuster conventions instead of being allowed to retain its aloof, slow-burning, hardcore qualities, so watching footage of someone waggling their hands cartoonishly around the screen while they pickpocket guards and shoot water arrows into fireplaces doesn't exactly quell the fears that might happen again. It's like hearing your favourite band have reformed, but only to appear on The Voice. Enough moaning, let's hear about some good games. Quite right, those exist too. Romeo is a Dead Man is the latest project from Grasshopper Manufacture, the legendarily idiosyncratic studio who made No More Heroes , Let it Die , and, in a supreme act of irony, No More Heroes II & III . This one sees you fighting hordes of undead, Dead Rising -style, and the combination of slick combat and a hyperactive mashup of visual influences makes it punch through the noise. It ought to be a lot of fun. Capcom's Pragmata looks like some imaginative sci-fi action with a faint whiff of Death Stranding to it. And speaking tangentially of Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid Delta will be too, and although that's a rather more known quantity at this point (it's MGS3 running in Unreal Engine), it's a nailed-on part of our gaming diet this year when it arrives on 28 August. Glad you noticed. Nioh 3 and Ghost of Yotei provided a one-two punch of feudal era Japan swordplay, and demonstrated two distinct approaches to that time, place, and activity. The Nioh threequel will offer more ultra-demanding duels that reward deft inputs and quick reactions, while Sucker Punch's follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima will do that, but with a bigger health bar and more narrative choices. Anything else worth keeping an eye on? Now that we've had a cup of tea and put the Thief VR thing behind us, yes there is. The show might have been missing that 'Hold on, what ?' reveal moment, but its smaller beats were very pleasing. Like the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection , which takes an archival approach to the first four classic beat 'em ups plus their various spinoffs, bundling them all into one place where they're super complete – sorry, Komplete – and playable on modern hardware. And Silent Hill f , a horror spinoff from the famously misty mainline series, which invites you to 'find the beauty in horror'. At first sight this one seems to be about the worries of a girl in adolescence made manifest as gore-drenched nameless horrors with blades all over them. Um, is it ok if we have a go at finding the beauty in that while the lights are still on and we keep pausing to decompress with restomod Tiktoks? Ok, deal. This is only the start of all the big announcements and trailer-spamming though, with Summer Games Fest 2025 due to start in earnest on Friday 6 June. You can keep abreast with all its happenings by checking the official schedule.
