England reach Euro 2025 semis after shootout win over Sweden
Smilla Holmberg blasted over from the spot in an eventful shootout in Zurich after the match finished 2-2 after extra time thanks to Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang's quick-fire strikes just as England looked to be limping out of the tournament.
The reigning European champions were staring at elimination with 11 minutes remaining in normal time after Kosovare Asllani, who opened the scoring with her 50th international goal in the second minute, and Stina Blackstenius shot Sweden into a two-goal lead at half-time.
But Sarina Wiegman's team will face Italy, who are in the last four for the first time since 1997, in the last four in Geneva on Tuesday after a sensational comeback.
Defeat ended Sweden's bid for a first major honour since winning the first official Euros back in 1984, Peter Gerhardsson's team falling in the most painful of fashions.
England scored 10 goals in their final two Group D matches to reach the last eight but showed none of that attacking flair in the early stages at the Letzigrund Stadium.
Sweden were on the front foot from the off and somehow it was no surprise when Asllani drilled home her opener after just one minute and 46 seconds, the attacking midfielder being completely free to collect Blackstenius' lay-off and score.
Jess Carter's loose pass led to that goal and moments later goalkeeper Hannah Hampton almost gifted Blackstenius her third goal of the tournament after miscontrolling the ball and allowing the Arsenal striker to bear down on an open goal before Leah Williamson slid in to cut out the danger.
Lauren Hemp's pot shot was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Jennifer Falk but that was a rare bright spot in a dismal opening half for England, who were deservedly two behind at the break.
Blackstenius showed how lethal she can be in the 25th minute when she raced in behind a dozing English defence, collected Julia Zigiotti Olme's pass, held off Carter and slotted home.
England were brighter after the restart and Hemp should have halved the deficit when she failed to direct Lauren James' cross on target.
And Bronze gave England hope by heading home Chloe Kelly's searching cross in the 79th minute before Agyemang reacted quickest to a loose ball and prodded England level.
Extra time passed without much incident and that left the shootout in which a parade of poor penalties, nine of which were missed, ended with Holmberg ballooning her effort way over and ending her team's year-long unbeaten run.

The 23-year-old is set to embark on a second major tournament with England, having burst onto the scene in 2021. The undeniable best team in the world, England have external expectations to lift silverware this summer but Kabeya's aims are different from that. 'For me, it is hard because I have always played for the enjoyment, and I think it is natural in any professional sport for you to have ups and downs,' she explained, as part of a new LG OLED TV collaboration ahead of this summer. 'But I just want to be able to play with so much fun, and that is how I want people to see me on the pitch. 'I don't have to play rugby because I want to be fast, I want to hit somebody, I want to play rugby because Sadia has so much fun, and I want to have that much fun. 'I think in professional sport you lose that, and I want to gain that back and be that for someone watching, that would be amazing.' Kabeya was a new face to the England team in New Zealand three years ago, when the Red Roses were beaten by the hosts in the final. Since then, she has established herself as one of the most reliable members of the back row, but with that comes more pressure. She added: 'The first time for me was a whirlwind. I was fresh into the squad, and it was a huge experience for me. 'I think this time it means that bit more, being at home and being a bit more cemented in the squad. To be able to hopefully represent my country at home would mean a lot. 'Three years ago was a baptism by fire. We played in record crowds at the time, and to play in that at 19 years old, the biggest stage for rugby, it taught me to deal with those crowds and with those big pressure moments. 'In a team like England, you are used to winning, but when you go to a big tournament, everything is different, everyone is on their A game, so I think what I have taken from those times is how to deal with those big pressure situations.' Togetherness will make Sunderland stronger says forward Watson
Sunderland forward Katy Watson says that togetherness will only make the team stronger as they look to progress in this season's Barclays WSL2. After going close to winning promotion in 2023/2024, The Lady Black Cats finished last season in seventh position in the league table. Going for promotion this season won't be easy but forward Watson says that togetherness will certainly provide Sunderland with solid foundations to do well. 'The season where we almost won the league was a shock to ourselves because we weren't going for promotion at all, it was just about finishing as high as we could,' Watson told WSL Full-Time. 'When we started winning games, we just said 'we can actually do this'. We didn't expect to win but it just kept getting closer and closer and we missed out with a couple of games left. 'Last season, maybe we set our standards too high and expected to finish that high [again] then when we went into games against the teams below, we might have been a bit too confident, that could have been where we went wrong. 'Going into this season, the togetherness definitely helps. We are doing lots of team-bonding stuff. As teammates, getting behind each other definitely makes us stronger and will help us get good results.' Sunderland are not only competing for promotion, they are also battling with neighbours Durham and Newcastle United for local bragging rights. Watson says that the North East competition is fierce. She said 'Every team in the North East want the bragging rights so that they can say they're the best team. Going into games, there's a lot of pressure. Everyone wants to win and they'll do absolutely anything to win.' Watson got her preparations for the new season off to the best possible start. She netted a hat-trick in Sunderland's 4-0 pre-season friendly victory over Rangers last week. The player revealed that she was eager to get back on the pitch and scoring goals. She said 'Going into the game, I was quite nervous because it was one of the first friendlies in pre-season. We had a big build-up on running; we pretty much ran every training session, so it was just nice to finally get a game. 'It was my first start of pre-season and I just went for goal. I definitely needed it because the first few sessions of pre-season were a lot of running, not as much football, so it was nice to get on the pitch, have a ball at my feet and just do what I do.' Nottingham Forest sign Ghanaian forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah
An attacking boost for the Forest Women ahead of the new season. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah / Nottingham Forest Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah has signed a two-year contract with Nottingham Forest Women. The Ghanaian international joins from the London City Lionesses, where she played last season in the FA Women's Championship. A free agent since last May, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah arrives at Nottingham Forest to continue her career. The 29-year-old forward was officially unveiled by the club on August 12 after putting pen to paper on a two-season deal. Having previously played for Everton and Aston Villa, Boye-Hlorkah featured for the London City Lionesses over the past two campaigns (2023-2025), helping the team earn promotion to the FA Women's Super League. On the international stage, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to Ghana in 2023. She took part in the recent 2024 Africa Women's Cup of Nations, held in July 2025, where the Black Queens secured a third-place finish. "I am thrilled to join the club and play alongside this group of players. The team had an incredible season last year. History is being made here and I am grateful to be able to help build something special within the club," Boye-Hlorkah said during her unveiling.
