Ariana Grande 'devastated' as she announces heartbreaking family death

Daily Mirror12 hours ago

Pop icon Ariana Grande and her family have announced the death of the Wicked star's beloved grandmother. Marjorie Grande, known affectionately known as 'Nonna' to Ariana and her brother Frankie Grande, was 99-years-old.
Announcing the sad news on her Instagram Stories this evening, Ariana, 31, reposted a statement from her mother, Joan Grande, announcing Marjorie's death.
"We are devastated to share that the beloved matriarch of our family has passed away," read the statement signed by Ariana and her family.
"Marjorie (Nonna) Grande passed away peacefully in her home and was surrounded by family and loved ones for every moment of her last few weeks. We thank you for your love, support, and for respecting our privacy as we grieve and celebrate her beautiful, extraordinary life."
Ariana often shared posts about her beloved grandmother on social media and even took her to see her film, Wicked, last November. The Thank U, Next hitmaker found herself fielding an uncomfortable question about her grandmother on the red carpet at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, where her role as Glinda in Wicked earned her a nod for best female actor in a supporting role.
During the star-studded event in January, the celebrated pop singer and actress was asked about the first person she rang after receiving news of her nomination. Ariana disclosed that her mother, Joan Grande, was the first to know.
The interviewer seemed taken aback that Ariana hadn't called her grandmother, Nonna, first. When questioned whether her grandmother was still with us, Ariana confirmed: "Yeah, my Nonna. She's 99 [years old]. Nonna was second and then yeah, Cynthia and my acting coach Nancy Banks, who I just called on the way over here."
Social media users were stunned by the interviewer's blunt question. "WHY WOULD THE INTERVIEWER ASK IF SHES STILL ALIVE [loudly crying face emoji]," one fumed, with another adding: "IS SHE STILL ALIVE? ? ? ? ? ? don't do nonna like that."
As the news of Nonna's death broke, Ariana's brother shared a detailed tribute to his late loved one. Captioning a series of snaps of himself alongside his beloved grandmother, the singer wrote to fans: "Dearest Nonna, How can I ever thank you enough for the countless lessons you wove into my heart over the years?
"You taught me how to love without conditions, how to dominate a three-card poker table, how to never ever take a bad picture, how to light up a dinner party just by being in the room, how to give the warmest, safest hugs, how to stand in my truth unapologetically, how to not give a single f*ck about what anyone thinks, and most importantly, how to show up for family in a way so deep, so unwavering, that I promise you: I will carry that torch fiercely in your absence. No question. No option.
"You always called me the apple of your eye, Nonna and you have always been mine. A best friend. My safe place. I honestly don't know how this world turns without you in it, but I do know this: I know you so well, I will never have to wonder what you'd say or think in any situation. Your voice, your love, your spirit is forever part of me. So in that way, we'll never be apart.
"I love you endlessly, my sweet Nonna. I miss you more than words can hold. My heart is shattered, but I feel you watching over me, already so proud of everything I've done and all that is about to come. "Thank you for every moment, every lesson, every hug, every belly laugh. Until we meet again, and we will, please kiss Grandpa and Aunt Judy for me, and tell them how much I love and miss them too. Forever your apple."

'Devastated' Ariana Grande announces the death of beloved family member

Ariana Grande has announced the death of her grandmother, Marjorie 'Nonna' Grande, aged 99 years old. On Tuesday, the 31-year-old pop star reshared a statement originally posted by her mother, Joan Grande, confirming the loss. 'We are devastated to share that the beloved matriarch of our family has passed away,' read the note, signed by Ariana and her family. 'Marjorie (Nonna) Grande passed away peacefully in her home and was surrounded by family and loved ones for every moment of her last few weeks.' The family added, 'We thank you for your love, support, and for respecting our privacy as we grieve and celebrate her beautiful, extraordinary life.' Ariana shared a particularly close bond with her grandmother, who she referred to affectionately as 'Nonna.' Over the years, Marjorie was a regular presence in the singer's life and was often seen with her superstar granddaughter. From appearing alongside Ariana at major events like the 2014 MTV VMAs, where they wore coordinating outfits, to joining her at the American Music Awards and the Time 100 Gala, Nonna became an unofficial part of the Grande fan family. In November 2023, Ariana flew to Florida to watch Wicked with her grandmother at a local movie theater they had visited often during Ariana's childhood. 'Flew to Boca for a day to watch with Nonna at the movie theater I grew up going to every weekend,' Ariana shared on Instagram Stories at the time. During the screening, she proudly recalled her grandmother's enthusiastic reaction to a moment in the film: 'Thrilled to report that when the sugar glider had her drum solo Nonna exclaimed loudly, 'Oh I LOVE that.'' Ariana's brother, Frankie Grande, also paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, sharing a series of photos and reflecting on the profound influence Marjorie had on his life. More Trending 'You taught me how to love without conditions… how to stand in my truth unapologetically… how to show up for family in a way so deep, so unwavering,' he wrote. 'You always called me the apple of your eye, Nonna, and you have always been mine.' In March 2024, Marjorie made history when she appeared on Ariana's track ordinary things from her Eternal Sunshine album. Her spoken-word message about love and commitment ('Never go to bed without kissing goodnight… and if you don't feel comfortable doing it, you're in the wrong place') made her the oldest artist ever to appear on the Billboard Hot 100. Ariana proudly celebrated the milestone, writing, 'Celebrating the one and only, most beautiful Nonna who has now made history.' Got a story?
