Tragedy as two men, 41 and 84, killed in A66 crash which shut road overnight
The two men, aged 41 and 84, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash involving a black Nissan Qashqai and a red Vauxhall Astra happened on the eastbound carriageway at Long Newton just after 9pm on Tuesday (February 11) evening.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the road was closed, and motorists were urged to avoid the area. Paramedics attended but were unable to save either of the men.

Their families are being supported by specialist officers.
Crash investigators were seen working at the scene overnight and an investigation is underway.
A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: 'The road was closed for over eight hours overnight whilst emergency services tried to save the men, and specialist officers carried out an investigation of the scene.

'Anyone with information on the circumstances prior to the collision or anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage is asked to call 101 quoting reference number 25064.'
The road reopened at about 6am on Wednesday (February 12), National Highways confirmed.

The Cleveland Fire Brigade said four fire engines from Thornaby and Stockton attended.
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called to a serious road traffic incident involving two vehicles on the A66 at Long Newton at 9.05pm last night, Tuesday 11 February.
"We dispatched three double crewed ambulances, a duty officer, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader and we were supported by the medical response car from Great North Air Ambulance."

Pedestrian in hospital after being hit by car on A468
A pedestrian is in hospital after being hit by a car on a busy road between Caerphilly and Newport. The A468 in Machen, near Caerphilly was closed for a number of hours on Tuesday, August 19, following the incident. Gwent Police said it was called at 5pm with a report of a collision between a car and a pedestrian. They were taken to hospital for treatment, where they remain. A sex offender caught trying to delete files from his computer during a police visit was found with sick pictures of children. Police called on Dominic O'Flanagan on June 7, 2022, to check the convicted predator was abiding by his sentence, after being convicted of crimes including having child abuse material. He will now spend the next eight months in prison, after he was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on August 12. He was also made subject to a seven-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). I'm pleased that O'Flanagan was given a custodial sentence so he is unable to continue his disgusting crimes. 'I'd like to thank everyone involved in bringing O'Flanagan to justice. We will continue to pursue those accessing such material and protect the vulnerable from harm.'

London travel news: Serious crash blocks M23 causing severe delays for London commuters
A serious crash on the M23 has severely disrupted travel for thousands of commuters travelling into south London. The incident occurred on the A23 around Merstham in Surrey at around 6.45am on Sunday, when emergency services were called. Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service have attended the scene, although it is not yet known how many vehicles were involved in the collision or if any injuries have been reported. However, Surrey Police have told drivers to avoid the area while the accident is being investigated and to use alternative routes where possible. National Highways have shut the M23/A23 between the M25 Junction 8 (Reigate Hill) and the A237 (Coulsdon)). No indication has been given on when the roads will reopen. The disruption is expected to cause major delays for motorists on the route to Croydon from the M25. Surrey Police launched an appeal for witnesses on Sunday. A spokesman said: "Were you were travelling through the area this morning between shortly before 6.30am?
