NDP 2025: Hope and anticipation as Singapore's 60th birthday bash kicks off
The slight drizzle and relentless heat had nothing on the audience, who sang along to familiar national favourites piped through speakers and thumped energetically to the beat with inflatable thunder sticks.
It was, after all, Singapore's 60th birthday bash – and the 27,000 people in attendance were ready to celebrate.
A segment in the pre-show of wishes penned by Singaporeans drew laughter, and some crowd favourites were 'I want to do well for Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)!' and 'I want to be on television!', and heartfelt ones like 'I want us to feel safe and welcomed!' and 'I want us to support each other!'.
Several Padang waves later, the giant screens showed hosts Joakim Gomez, Sonia Chew, Ebi Shankara and Siti Khalijah 'teleporting' from the stage at the Padang to an MRT train.
To the soundtrack Makin' Our Way, written and composed by home-grown artist Benjamin Kheng, a film showed the hosts riding the train to scenes in Singapore's history, before they hopped onto a Singapore Big Bus.
There was a surprise appearance made by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in the film, who played a riff on an electric guitar at the back of that Singapore Big Bus – to loud cheers from the audience at the Padang.
It was then when the hosts pulled up in person at the Padang.
The atmosphere turned electric when it became clear that the show had started proper, with the four hosts breaking into song and dance on the Padang stage.
Not a moment was wasted thereafter, as thrilling music drew eyes skywards to the impending arrival of the Red Lions parachutists.
Phones were whipped out, necks craned, and breaths bated as the seven skydivers – leaping from the aircraft at 3,050m above ground and at first appearing as small dots in the sky – spiralled downwards.
The Red Lions linked their arms together to form a circle, before dispersing in a 'bomb burst' manoeuvre complete with red smoke trails to resemble a flower opening.
At about 1,220m above ground, the Red Lions deployed their parachutes for their descent onto the Padang to resounding cheers from the audience.
The Red Lions' arrival was just half of the perennial crowd favourite. In the inaugural Jump of Unity at the 2025 parade, seven naval divers parachuted into Marina Bay from a helicopter at about 1,830m above ground.
Their splashdown in Marina Bay was similarly met with thunderous roars from the massive crowd gathered at the promontory on the bay.
After their dramatic jumps, the 14 Red Lions and naval divers performed a combined simultaneous salute from their separate landing sites.
Audience members then turned their eyes to a video featuring Singaporeans from all walks of life talking about their wishes for their community and themselves.
As night fell, the camera panned to members of the crowd holding up their wish placards, illuminating the idea of collective hope for the nation's future.

‘My Lovely Journey' Wonders What's Next For An Ex K-Pop Trainee
Kang Yeo-reum has been on the same journey since she became a k-pop trainee at the age of 13, but that journey has ended, so she has to decide where she will go next. Yeo-reum, the main character in the k-drama My Lovely Journey, wanted to become a star so she could make her parents proud. But after her years in a girl group did not lead to success, she became a travel reporter for a show that explored Korea. Yet no matter how hard she tried to make that show a success, she was stymied by an annoying director and his choices eventually got the show cancelled. Yeo-reum, played by Gong Seung-yeon (Karma, Are You Human, Flower Crew Joseon Marriage Agency), is one of the year's most likable k-drama heroines. She works hard, remains optimistic and cheerful, but life keeps piling on the failures, including a failed relationship with a boyfriend who didn't deserve her. Her agent Oh Sang-sik, played by Yu Jun-sang (The Uncanny Counter 2, Alchemy of Souls, The Penthouse) is down to his last two clients and with the cancellation of her show, it seems the end of her career might lead to the end of his agency. Her sense of delight in the surrounding world is an untapped talent. When things start to get desperate, she's offered a fee to take a mystery trip and film the location. The concept is a little weird, but, out of options, she eventually agrees. For the first time in her life, she must make all the arrangements and call the shots. It's an emotional journey of self discovery. The drama explores what happens when the k-pop dream isn't realized . An ex-trainee might be unprepared to deal with practicalities once they are no longer micro managed by an agency. In that way it's a coming of age story even though Yeo-reum is old enough to take care of herself. She's sure that her trip means the end of her career but it might be a new beginning. Lee Yeon-seok, played by Kim Jae-young (Love In Contract, Reflection of You, Judge From Hell) is a TV editor connected with her show. Or he was until he spoke up to defend her. He's been watching her from afar and he knows how she's suffered. As a stymied film director he needs to change his life too. The drama is based on the 2021 novel Oka no Ue no Kenjin Tabya Okeri by Maha Harada. It's directed by Kang Sol and was adapted for the screen by Jang Hwee-hyun. My Lovely Journey airs on in the U.S.

Why pirate flags are taking over Indonesia as country celebrates 80 years of independence
On 17 August, Indonesia will celebrate 80 years of independence – a moment that its leader Prabowo Subianto has said should be marked by citizens proudly displaying the country's red and white national flag. Yet it's a very different kind of flag that has been flying off shelves ahead of Independence Day: one with a classic pirates' skull and crossbones wearing a distinctive yellow straw hat. Disgruntled Indonesians have drawn on the Jolly Roger from Japanese anime One Piece as a symbol of rebellion, and the flag is now appearing everywhere, from graffiti on streets to people's car windows and balconies. One Piece, a hugely popular Japanese manga and anime that also received a Netflix adaptation in 2023, has a massive fanbase in Indonesia. Protesters are drawing inspiration from the cartoon's story about a group of pirates who band together against the forces of an authoritarian regime. The use of the skull and crossbones symbol appears to have begun on Indonesian social media platforms earlier this year alongside student protests, dubbed 'Dark Indonesia', that swept across cities in response to budget cuts and growing military influence in civilian affairs. Indonesian artist Kemas Muhammad Firdaus, 28, a mural artist in West Java's Bekasi district, told Reuters he was painting the pirate sign as a form of protest against government corruption and unemployment. 'Many Indonesians are hoisting the 'One Piece' flag because they want the government to listen to them,' said Mr Kemas. In central Java's Karanganyar district, flag-maker Dendi Christanto said demand for custom One Piece pirate flags has surged so dramatically in the past month that he's had to stop taking new orders. The movement taps into a long tradition of student activism in Indonesia, where protests have historically flared into unrest, most notably in 1998, when mass demonstrations brought down President Suharto after 32 years in power. The spread of the Jolly Roger has not gone unnoticed: the deputy house speaker in the country's parliament called the trend divisive, while another lawmaker went as far as to label it 'borderline treason'. This week, local media reported that authorities in East Java had seized several One Piece flags, in a move Amnesty International condemned as excessive. 'They didn't have to do all that, accusing them of dividing Indonesia – that's wrong,' Mr Kemas said. 'It's just art.' President Prabowo's office denied any involvement, saying the government had not ordered the confiscations. But security minister Budi Gunawan said flying the One Piece flag before the country's 80th Independence Day is a crime and disrespects the national flag. He warned that the government would take legal action to protect state symbols. The deputy speaker, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, also reportedly said that 'we have detected and received input from security agencies that there is indeed an attempt to divide unity. My appeal to all the nation's children is to unite and fight against such things'. In a Medium post, Mulawarman University student Farhan Rizqullah wrote: 'The flag they were talking about was the Jolly Roger of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy's goofy, grinning skull wearing his signature straw hat. It was the symbol of the lovable crew I had just watched sail off into the sunset. 'And now, a real-world government, the government of Indonesia, the world's third-largest democracy, was treating this cartoon emblem as a legitimate threat to national security. It was being called a 'provocation', a 'systematic movement' to divide the nation, and a symbol of potential 'treason'.' Ubedilah Badrun, a sociology lecturer at Jakarta State University, said the government should listen to its people rather than overreact to the flying of One Piece flag by branding it an act of rebellion. 'In terms of sociopolitical symbolism, any symbol that emerges massively in public arenas, including on social media, is an expression of citizens to convey something,' he told Tempo.

If it's anything like her Aupen bag, it boasts an impressive price tag. Unless you have Melendez on speed dial, the Himalayan Aupen isn't available to the public. A limited-edition collection will launch on August 9, possibly starring Ortega's other Aupen bag, the Nirvana. The Wednesday actor first boarded the Aupen bandwagon in Feb. 2024 at a Saturday Night Live after-party. She carried the diagonal Nirvana bag in chocolate brown to match her Monse Fall 2025 slip dress. Its braided shoulder strap just barely peeked out from underneath her faux fur Snow Xue Gao coat. The Nirvana bag is only two years old, yet it's already become an It bag among celebrities. Swift endorsed the $340 shoulder style in Oct. 2023, alongside a high-low Versace look, no less. Within months, everyone from Olivia Rodrigo and Selena Gomez to Lady Gaga and Hailey Bieber added the Nirvana, in various neutral vegan leathers, to their closets. Aupen's site is surprisingly quiet, offering nothing but a countdown to the limited-edition release, and a photo of a croc-embossed Purpose bag.
