VIMSAR introduces ACL reconstruction surgery
SAMBALPUR: The Orthopaedics department of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla has introduced ligament reconstruction surgery, providing much-needed relief to patients in western Odisha, who previously had to travel to Cuttack or Bhubaneswar for similar procedures.
The advanced medical procedure primarily focuses on reconstructing the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), which connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) inside the knee. ACL injuries are common among athletes and individuals engaged in physical activities, often requiring surgical intervention for full recovery. Private hospitals typically charge around Rs 2 to Rs 3 lakh for such procedures, but VIMSAR has set a remarkable precedent by offering the surgery free of cost.
Head of Orthopaedics department Dr Brajamohan Sahu said these procedures have become possible due to the arthroscopy machine, which was procured a few months back with the CSR funds provided by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).
'Initially, we conducted minor surgeries using the equipment. But now, we have started performing complex surgeries. On Wednesday, we successfully completed ACL reconstruction on a 35-year-old patient from Sambalpur. So far, around 30 ligament reconstruction procedures have been conducted using this modern equipment,' he said.
The latest surgery was conducted on a patient from Sambalpur under the supervision of Dr Sahu and Professor PK Merli. The surgical team also comprised Dr Prabhakar Tripathy, Dr Debiprasad Nanda, Dr Bikash Dubey, Dr Shivanand Budhia, Dr Sohan Samal and Dr Preetam Jena.

IIT Delhi, AIIMS join hands for AI centre
New Delhi: IIT Delhi and AIIMS have joined hands to establish a Centre of Excellence for AI in healthcare, which will focus on developing AI-based solutions for supporting key national health programmes in the country. The institutes signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the centre. Last year, the two institutes were awarded a grant of Rs 330 crore by the Ministry of Education under the initiative 'Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India'. M Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi, expressed his confidence in the initiative. "This MoU marks the beginning of far-reaching collaborative research that has the potential to change the face of healthcare in the country," he said. Echoing the enthusiasm, IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee highlighted the potential of the partnership in advancing affordable healthcare solutions. Rekha throws open waiting hall at AIIMS for attendants
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday inaugurated a waiting hall for the attendants of patients at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Built for Rs 6 crore by Dhanuka Agritech Ltd as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, the waiting hall will serve thousands of people. Spanning 68,800 square feet, the waiting area is fully air-conditioned, equipped with clean sanitation facilities, mobile charging stations and seating space for 1,500. Gupta also appreciated AIIMS, saying it was a ray of hope for millions of people in the country who come to the premier institute for the best treatment and life-saving medical interventions. She mentioned that AIIMS served more than six lakh patients annually through its out-patient department. She further said that in terms of medical treatment, ICU facilities, admission system and the dedication of doctors, AIIMS ranked among the country's top institutions.
