Man killed, nephew hurt in road accident

Rourkela: A 34-year-old man was killed and his minor nephew critically injured when a trailer hit their scooter on the Kanika-Durubaga-Kanaktura road under Hemgir police station limits in Sundargarh district on Wednesday. The incident triggered a six-hour protest by locals who demanded compensation and employment benefits for the deceased's family. The deceased, Sraban Gaud, a resident of Badibahal and an employee of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited's Dulunga mines, was travelling with his 14-year-old nephew, Subham Dila, when the tragedy occurred around 9 am. The trailer, reportedly heading towards the Odisha Coal & Power Limited (OCPL) mines, struck their scooter from behind. While Subham was thrown off the vehicle, Sraban fell on the road and was run over by the trailer. The driver fled the scene. Subham, a resident of Tilia, was initially rushed to Hemgir community health centre and later shifted to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital as his condition deteriorated. Protesters placed Gaud's body on the road, demanding adequate compensation, employment for his widow, and the construction of a coal corridor road. The blockade was lifted around 3pm after authorities assured a compensation package, including Rs 1 lakh from OCPL, another Rs 1 lakh from the truck association, and Rs 20,000 from the Red Cross, along with employment provisions for Gaud's wife. "We are working to identify the trailer and apprehend the driver," said Nirmal Mohapatra, SDPO, Sadar, Sundargarh. The post-mortem examination is scheduled for Thursday.

CBI's bribery cuffs on senior MCL official

Bhubaneswar: A senior official of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) was arrested by the CBI on Thursday for allegedly accepting Rs 20,000 bribe from a man to release his compensation money for land acquisition. According to the CBI statement, Akhilesh Kumar Verma served as chief manager (mining) at MCL's Basundhara area in Sundargarh district. CBI's FIR claimed Verma accepted the amount as the final instalment of Rs 30,000 that he had demanded from the complainant to process land acquisition compensation of Rs 11,37,595. "The complainant had previously paid Rs 10,000 on July 3. Initially, Verma had asked for Rs 40,000 to process the file, but the amount was subsequently reduced to Rs 30,000. After receiving the first payment on July 3, he processed the file and transferred the compensation to the complainant's account," the FIR stated. Subsequently, Verma stayed in contact with the complainant for the remaining Rs 20,000 and asked him to visit his residence at Tiklipara in Sundargarh. The complainant approached the CBI on Wednesday, following which a trap was laid. "Verma was arrested while accepting the bribe near his residence. A case has been registered against Verma under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). He was sent to judicial custody following rejection of his bail plea," a CBI source said. When contacted, an MCL spokesperson said, "It will not be appropriate for us to comment when the CBI investigation is ongoing."

VIMSAR introduces ACL reconstruction surgery

SAMBALPUR: The Orthopaedics department of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla has introduced ligament reconstruction surgery, providing much-needed relief to patients in western Odisha, who previously had to travel to Cuttack or Bhubaneswar for similar procedures. The advanced medical procedure primarily focuses on reconstructing the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), which connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) inside the knee. ACL injuries are common among athletes and individuals engaged in physical activities, often requiring surgical intervention for full recovery. Private hospitals typically charge around Rs 2 to Rs 3 lakh for such procedures, but VIMSAR has set a remarkable precedent by offering the surgery free of cost. Head of Orthopaedics department Dr Brajamohan Sahu said these procedures have become possible due to the arthroscopy machine, which was procured a few months back with the CSR funds provided by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). 'Initially, we conducted minor surgeries using the equipment. But now, we have started performing complex surgeries. On Wednesday, we successfully completed ACL reconstruction on a 35-year-old patient from Sambalpur. So far, around 30 ligament reconstruction procedures have been conducted using this modern equipment,' he said. The latest surgery was conducted on a patient from Sambalpur under the supervision of Dr Sahu and Professor PK Merli. The surgical team also comprised Dr Prabhakar Tripathy, Dr Debiprasad Nanda, Dr Bikash Dubey, Dr Shivanand Budhia, Dr Sohan Samal and Dr Preetam Jena.
