NIT Rourkela 22nd Convocation held; over 2,000 degrees awarded

The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) on June 20 held its 22nd convocation for the graduation class of 2024. As many as 2,065 students – 457 female and 1608 male – graduated from the institute this year.
Uday A. Kaole, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited was present as the Chief Guest. S. N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman, Board of Governors, NIT Rourkela, virtually addressed the gathering, and Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao, Director, NIT Rourkela, presented the Director's report.
NIT Rourkela, this year, has seen a rise in the number of female students graduating in different streams. This year, as many as 457, which is more than 22 per cent of graduating students, were female students. 208 female students were conferred degrees in Bachelor programmes, 186 in Masters, and 63 in PhD programmes.
A total of 93 international students, including 72 males and 21 females, were conferred degrees in the NIT Rourkela's 22nd convocation today in various academic programmes. These students represent diverse countries – four are from the United States of America, five from Afghanistan, three from Sri Lanka, five from Bhutan, 21 from Bangladesh, and 30 from Nepal. Additionally, 25 Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students from India also graduated.
To honour academic excellence, the Institute also awarded eight Institute Gold Medals, six Endowment Gold Medals, seven Endowment Awards, and 59 Silver Medals to branch toppers of the graduating batch of the year 2024.
While presenting the Director's report, Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao, Director, NIT Rourkela, said, 'On behalf of the institute I congratulate the graduating class of 2024 on their Convocation. Being one of India's leading technical Institutions, NIT Rourkela takes pride in nurturing competent professionals and responsible citizens. By introducing new age programs such as B.Tech. in Artificial Intelligence, and a growing international student community, we are preparing our graduates to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.'
At the 22nd Convocation of NIT Rourkela, four alumni were honoured with Distinguished Alumnus Awards for their achievements in academia and research, industry and management, entrepreneurship and public life, and contributions made to the growth of the institute. The awardees included Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, Jharkhand; Er. Ashok Kumar Basa, Managing Director, C.E.M. Engineers & Consultants Pvt. Ltd; Er. R. S. Raghavan, Managing Director, Proman Infrastructure Services Pvt. Ltd; and Dr. Bhartendu Deo, Head of Electrical, Qatargas North Field Expansion Project.

The Railway Ministry has authorized Zonal Railways to allocate single-brand, company-owned premium outlets at stations through e-auctions, responding to a South Central Railway proposal. This decision allows for premium locations to be identified based on footfall and passenger demographics. Remove Ads Zonal Railways can allot single-brand, company-owned premium outlets at stations through e-auctions if there is a demand and justification for the same, the Railway Ministry has an official communication dated August 11, 2025, the Ministry responded to a proposal of the South Central Railway for guidelines regarding the opening of premium single-brand outlets on a par with airports and said that after examining the matter, it has been decided that the stalls can be allotted within the existing policy and not on a nomination basis."The Divisions/Zonal Railways concerned shall identify premium locations and suitable product/service categories based on footfall, space availability, passenger demographics and other relevant station-specific characteristics," the Ministry Ministry has clarified that the allotments of the stalls would be as per the governing e-auction policy."For awarding such contracts, a dedicated "Premium Stores" segment may be created within the e-auction module. The successful bidder can decide the brand/s for the outlet," the Ministry asked the zones to ensure that such stalls should enhance the ambience of the stations and the image of Indian Railways."The Divisions concerned may formulate the Special Conditions of the contract as per the requirements," the Ministry the South Central Railway (SCR) wrote to the Ministry and said that Station Redevelopment Works, both Major Upgradation and ABSS (The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme), at many of its stations are targeted for completion during the current financial year of 2025-26."In tune with the world class facilities being provided to the passengers, there is need to permit Premium Single Brand Outlets of various non-catering categories like travel accessories (Samsonite/American Tourister/VIP etc), Apparels (Arrow/Van Heusen/Peter England/Biba etc), Footwear and Sportsgear (Nike/Adidas/Reebok etc) and other items at stations on par with similar facilities available to passengers at airports," the SCR added, "It is therefore requested to issue guidelines for provision of Premium Single Brand Outlets at stations under NFR (Non-Fare Revenue) at the earliest so that commercial spaces developed at the stations under Major Upgradation and ABSS are put to effective use not only for providing enhanced passenger experience but also for improving revenue to Railways.

ET Online HDFC Bank service charges from August 1, 2025 After ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank has announced a comprehensive revision of service charges, impacting cash transactions, cheque services, certificate issuance, and electronic fund transfers. The changes include reduced free transaction limits, increased per-transaction charges, and revised fees for NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, and ECS/ACH returns, with differentiated rates for senior citizens and premium account holders. The revision in fees and charges for savings, salary, and NRI accounts, effective from August 1, 2025. HDFC Bank customers will get 4 free cash transactions per month; beyond this, a charge of Rs 150 per transaction will apply. The free monthly value limit for self and third-party transactions at any branch has been reduced from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 1 lakh per account. Beyond this limit, charges will be Rs 5 per Rs 1,000 or part thereof, subject to a minimum of Rs 150. The third-party daily cash transaction limit is Rs 25,000 per day at any branch; transactions above this amount are not permitted. SBI hikes IMPS charges from August 15, 2025: See what PNB, Canara Bank are charging Balance Certificate, Interest Certificate charges Earlier, balance certificate, interest certificate, and address confirmation were free of charge, while old records, copy of paid cheques cost Rs 80 for regular customers and Rs 72 for senior citizens. Now, effective per instance, the charges for all these services are Rs 100 for regular customers and Rs 90 for senior citizens when availed physically at branch premises. ECS/ACH return charges Now, the charges have been revised to Rs 500 for the 1st return (Senior Citizen – Rs 450) and Rs 550 for the 2nd return onwards (Senior Citizen – Rs 500). HDFC Bank cheque return charges Cheque return charges for financial reasons, the charges are Rs 500 for the first return (Rs 450 for senior citizens) and Rs 550 for the second return onwards (Rs 500 for senior citizens).If a cheque is returned for technical reasons, the charge is Rs 50 (Rs 45 for senior citizens). Technical cases refer to missing date, post-dated cheques, or signature mismatch. RTGS transaction through branch Earlier, RTGS charges were Rs 15 for transactions of Rs 2 lakh and above (Rs 13.5 for senior citizens). Now, they are Rs 20 for transactions between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh (Rs 18 for senior citizens) and Rs 45 for transactions above Rs 5 lakh (Rs 40.5 for senior citizens). NEFT transaction through branch From August 1, 2025, the revised charges will be as followsUp to Rs 10,000 – Rs 2 (Rs 1.80 for senior citizens), Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh – Rs 4 (Rs 3.60 for senior citizens), Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh – Rs 14 (Rs 12.60 for senior citizens), Above Rs 2 lakh – Rs 24 (Rs 21.60 for senior citizens). Earlier, NEFT transactions through branches were charged at Rs 2 for amounts up to Rs 1 lakh (Rs 1.80 for senior citizens) and Rs 10 for amounts above Rs 1 lakh (Rs 9 for senior citizens). IMPS transaction through Online From August 1, 2025, the revised charges will be: up to Rs 1,000 – Rs 2.50 for regular customers and Rs 2.25 for senior citizens; Rs 1,000 to Rs 1 lakh – Rs 5 for regular customers and Rs 4.50 for senior citizens; and above Rs 1 lakh – Rs 15 for regular customers and Rs 13.50 for senior citizens.
