Jesse Mendes Joins 2025 Lineup for Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

Web Release5 days ago
Brazilian surf star Jesse Mendes is the latest name to be announced for the 2025 Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy. A former Championship Tour contender and 2018 Triple Crown of Surfing winner, Mendes brings power, poise, and a penchant for alternative boards to the one-of-a-kind event hosted at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa.
'It's such a dream to get the call-up!' says Mendes. 'I remember I was with Adriano de Souza when he got his invitation a couple of years ago. He turned to me with the biggest smile and accepted straight away, because he said he didn't want to give Four Seasons time to change their minds! When surfers who've been going to competitions their whole lives react like that, you know an event is special. Now it's my turn and I can't wait!'
With six legendary surfers riding a range of boards, and competition times staggered according to age, the Surfing Champions Trophy is as unique as it is popular with the legends who get invited. Competitors square off on single fin, twin fin and (thruster) tri-fin surfboards in the first three rounds, before the grand final is run on the surfer's board of choice to crown a champion.
While 31-year-old Mendes carved out a career on the back of his powerful turns and prowess in the tube, since stepping away from full-time competition he has focussed on the more stylish side of surfing, doing so riding Album surfboards, which will serve him well at the Surfing Champions Trophy. 'Now that the pressure of the tour is gone, I only ride twin fins,' he shares. 'They are very forgiving and can generate a lot of speed, so I'm very excited for that division! I've already been talking to Matt Parker about the Surfing Champions Trophy — he's shaped boards for Josh Kerr and Coco Ho here before. We've come up with a few ideas together. He knows what to do; I just need to surf!'
While the surfing takes centre stage, the experience at Kuda Huraa runs far deeper, something Mendes is keen to savour. 'I've been to the Maldives before and loved it,' he says. 'But to come back again and surf perfect waves with only two other people out, in a different and fun format, is the best. As for Four Seasons, bring on the food! Nothing beats surfing all day long, then coming back to an amazing meal, with my wife, on a paradise island.'
From the flawless right-handers of Sultans to the laid-back luxury of the garden island, the Surfing Champions Trophy is as much about the setting as it is the surfing. Guests staying at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa during the contest can catch all the action from the Resort's luxury surf vessels, stationed beside the competition lineup for front-row viewing.
With Mendes and Craig Anderson now confirmed, the excitement is building for a surf showdown like no other. Three more international invitees, plus one Maldivian wildcard, will be announced in the coming weeks.
Make Every Wave Count with The Surf's Up Package
Whether catching the very first swell or chasing the perfect carve, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa invites guests to ride, relax, and repeat. The Surf's Up package pairs expert coaching from Tropicsurf pros with guided surf excursions to some of the Maldives' most iconic breaks, all from the comfort of the idyllic island base. After a morning on the waves, restore body and mind with daily yoga and a rejuvenating massage at The Island Spa. The package also includes daily breakfast, round-trip speedboat transfers, top-tier surf gear, and more.

Neymar says he felt offended, explaining confrontation with fan

Striker Neymar said it was hard to control his feelings when he was being insulted, commenting on a heated exchange he had with a fan after his late goal was ruled out and his club Santos suffered a 2-1 defeat that left them in the Brazilian Serie A relegation zone. The 33-year-old Brazilian, who has had a frustrating time since returning to his boyhood club this year, went over to the stands at the end of Wednesday's game with Internacional to talk with a fan who appeared to be remonstrating with him. Videos showed Neymar agitated and gesticulating, then raising a thumbs up as a teammate ushers him away. 'In the heat of the moment, it is difficult to control your feelings when you are unfairly offended,' Neymar posted on Instagram late on Thursday. 'I will never argue with fans when they criticise me on the pitch, because they have the right to say whether I played badly or not, and they have every right to boo me! 'What they can't do is insult me the way they insulted me...' Santos had been pushing for a comeback from two goals with Alvaro Martin Barreal scoring a minute into added time. Three minutes later, Neymar thought he had scored with a left-footed shot and celebrated in front of cheering home fans. But boos rang out across Vila Belmiro stadium as the referee ruled the ball had not crossed the line. Santos are 17th in the 20-club league, where the bottom four are relegated to Serie B at the end of the season. The former Barcelona and Paris St Germain player has had a torrid time since returning: sidelined with injury, sent off for a handball and suffering COVID-19. 'On the day the fans think I can no longer help or that I am harming the club in any way, I will be the first to pack my things and leave!' Neymar added in his remarks on Thursday. 'Santos is one of my greatest passions, and as long as I have the strength, I will do my best for this club. I will run, fight, shout, and even argue if necessary to get Santos where it deserves to be.' Reuters

Khotam Boynazarov grapples his way to victory to retain UAE Warriors welterweight title

James Llontop's hopes of a return to the UFC anytime soon suffered a setback after he was outclassed by UAE Warriors welterweight champion Khotam Boynazarov in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. The Peruvian arrived in the UAE capital with two victories since being released by the world's lead MMA promotion following three straight defeats. He had no answer to the Ukrainian's superior grappling, who dominated over five rounds. Boynazarov was awarded the bout on all the judges' scorecards to successfully defend his welterweight title for the second time to take his perfect career record to 11 wins. The champion kept the contest firmly confined to his strengths, taking Llontop to the mat and several times in the first three rounds before going through the motions to see out the contest. 'Yeah, I knew I was ahead on points after first three rounds. Thereafter, I didn't have to do anything silly but just stay focussed in completing the contest,' Boynazarov said. 'I knew he was tired after the first three rounds. I was tired too but I preserved my energy in the fourth and had another go at him in the final round to make sure I had the decision in my favour. 'I'm very happy to retain the belt and happy to remain undefeated. Obviously I'll be back to defend the promotion's belt whenever they decide to schedule my next fight.' The 12-fight card saw five first-round finishes through spectacular strikes and submissions. Bruno Machado took his perfect record in the promotion to seven and his overall record to 16-9. The Abu Dhabi-based Brazilian stopped Azerbaijani veteran Agshin Babaev with ground and pound in one minute 36 seconds in the catchweight 158lbs co-main contest. The other four first round finishes were recorded by Marouane Ballagouit, Ramazan Ragimov, Ullubiy Amirzhanov and Amir Hossein Alipour. Ballagouit sank an elbow to open a deep cut above Filipino Jayson Margallo's left eye before the referee stopped the contest in four minutes and 45 seconds in the opening fight on the card. Ramzan Ragimov had both of Dumar Roa's hands locked in a ground and pound submission in two minutes and four seconds in the next. Amirzhanov was on target with a stunning left kick to the ribs of Ravshan Boymirzaev, sending him crashing to the canvas in one minute and three seconds as the first three fights ended in the first round. Alipour then beat all of them with the quickest finish of the night. The Iranian landed a stunning right hook at Abdelkrim Zouad's jaw to send the Algerian to fall flat on his back in one minute and one second. The fight that had the crowd on the edge of their seats was the lightweight contest between Felipe Douglas and Zhasulan Akimzhanov, both ending with deep cuts above their eyes and bloody faces. Douglas suffered the cut above his right eye in the opening round but the Brazilian clawed back to win a unanimous decision over the Kazakh in a fight that saw every aspect of a real mixed martial arts fight on display.
