Emilia Pérez's barnstormer El Mal was all but guaranteed best original song after a slew of other recent awards victories. What was less expected was the victory speech from songwriters Clément Ducol and Camille – who launched into a warbling a capella performance of their track as director (and the song's co-writer), Jacques Audiard, stood stiffly just behind the podium. Their rendition soared high into a completely silent audience; they bravely beat on, voices against the play-off music, borne back ceaselessly into the crowd.

When the ceremony cut to an ad break, audiences in the Dolby theatre were treated to a much-needed intermission – courtesy of Colman Domingo, best actor nominee for Sing Sing and Hollywood's suavest leading man. During a lull in the proceedings, Domingo rallied the audience to their feet while the Maze funk classic Before I Let Go echoed through the room. He bounced on stage in a cherry-red tux and a drink in hand – and soon the crowd was on their feet. Winning best documentary, No Other Land – a harrowing account of the destruction of villages in the West Bank – became the first Palestinian feature recognised by the academy, despite still lacking US distribution. In a stirring speech that roundly inveighed against the US government, co-director (and new father) Basel Adra also dedicated the award to his daughter. 'I hoped that she would not have to live the same life that I am living now,' he said.

If you're willing to stay up for a few more hours into the night, Netflix is about to release your next bingeable fix. The creator behind the platform's hits Clickbait and Stateless now brings The Survivors to the streaming service, a murder mystery set against the Australian island Tasmania's unforgiving landscape. Showrunner Tony Ayres has described the six-part miniseries as 'a family melodrama disguised as a murder mystery', exploring the long-tail of generational trauma. Based on Jane Harper's bestselling book, the thriller follows Kieran Elliott (Charlie Vickers) and Mia Chang (Yerin Ha), who return to Kieran's Tasmanian hometown Evelyn Bay. They arrive in the seaside setting fifteen years after a terrible storm took three lives, including Kieran's older brother. 'The things that are really at its heart are things like a son wanting his mother's love and the mother who just cannot afford to give it because her whole world might fall apart,' he said. 'Themes of family and loss and the stories that we tell each other to understand loss.' Evelyn Bay isn't a real place, but one Jane Harper created for her novel, although the Netflix production did shoot at various locations in Tasmania. Ayres told Variety: 'It became very clear once we found Eagle Hawk Neck and the spectacular landscapes that the locations were going to be crucial to not just the tone of the show, but the themes of the show.' Prime Video adds 'one of the best sequels ever' two months after cinema release
Fans think it was one of the best films released this year Prime Video has just added what's being hailed as the 'action film of the year' and 'one of the best sequels ever'. The Accountant 2, a follow-up to the 2016 original, is now part of Amazon's streaming library as of today (June 5), despite only hitting cinemas earlier this year. The first film, considered a hidden gem by many, can be viewed with a Sky Cinema subscription or a NOW membership. Ben Affleck reprises his role as forensic accountant Christian Wolff in the sequel, teaming up with his estranged yet deadly brother, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, to hunt down elusive assassins. Rumours of a sequel began circulating in 2017, but as time passed, it seemed to fade from fans' minds. Speculation about a third instalment has also been rife, with filming for the sequel only starting in March last year. Despite lukewarm critical reception for the first film, it became a fan favourite, and followers have finally been rewarded with a sequel. Bill Dubuque, the original writer who later created the Netflix series Ozark, returned to write the script and also took on directing duties, reports Bristol Live. The sequel has outperformed its predecessor both commercially and critically, earning a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have been quick to laud it both as a standalone action film and for its achievements as a sequel. One devotee put it succinctly: "one of the best sequels ever". Another remarked: "This is probably the best action movie of the year. The test of a good sequel, for me, is that it works as movie in its own right, which this does. Whilst it will not win any Oscars, it was thoroughly enjoyable and made us laugh. The story line connects well to the original movie and the dynamic between the brothers is both funny and serious at the same time." Sharing their verdict on social media, another added: "This is how you do a sequel! The Accountant 2 blew me away. Unlike most action sequels that just go bigger and louder, this one slows down when it needs to and it works. The relationship between the brothers actually matters, and that emotional core gives the action real weight." They elaborated: "There's comedy that actually made me laugh, a bit of romance, and a moment or two that hit surprisingly hard. And yeah, when it's time to throw down, the fight scenes are slick, brutal, and insanely fun to watch. I came for the action, stayed for the characters, and left fully satisfied. Give me The Accountant 3 now!" While many spectators had previously declared the original film as Affleck's finest hour, some are now suggesting that the follow-up offers Daredevil actor Bernthal his crowning moment. One viewer praised Bernthal's performance, saying: "Bernthal is a national treasure. It was nice to see him do his thing in an action movie and not have nightmares from his grunting noises he does as the Punisher. He has never disappointed in any film, and made this movie 100% better just being in it."

But the pair, who played mysterious Rick Hackett and his girlfriend Chelsea, have finally spoken out - revealing why they've only seen each other once since season three's February premiere. And Walton, unable to hold back his emotions, declared "I love this woman madly" about Aimee in a bid to set the record straight. Two months since the show's dramatic finale, the pair have reunited for Variety magazine as they got up close and personal once again. Speaking of the moment they met for the very first time, Aimee revealed he had texted her to come over for lunch. She said: "I didn't know what to order. I was like, 'Can you pick for me?' I was so nervous." Walton added: "The minute she walked around the corner, I felt, 'This is gonna work. Two minutes into the conversation, it felt like I've known this person for 100 years." We care about each other very deeply." Aimee also responded to the feud rumours and Walton unfollowing her on Instagram, which she doesn't appear fussed about at all. "I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a s***e about Instagram," she said. While she had initially wanted to respond to the feud claims over the following, Aimee said that she decided to just "sit back and watch these people making something out of absolutely nothing". Explaining further about the unfollowing, Walton - whose first wife tragically died by suicide in 2004 - suggested that he simply wasn't good with goodbyes and unfollowed anyone who was part of the show after filming wrapped up. In tears, he said: "I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea." Walton went on to say that he had just needed to take a step back from everyone after filming ended and he hasn't spoken to anyone as he "couldn't handle it". He added: "Judge me or don't. I don't give a f*** what you think. This is my process. Rick means everything to me, and Chelsea means everything to me." As the interview wrapped up, Walton declared that he would follow Aimee on Instagram again, declaring it all "ridiculous" and that he would be friends with her "for f***ing ever". Crying again as he hugged his former co-star, Walton added: "I'm emotional because we haven't been in the same city to ever talk about this. So for me, this is just so wonderful."
