26 homes destroyed in Tawau fire

A motorcycle was also reported to have been destroyed, but the swift action of the fire department successfully prevented the fire from spreading to another 1,300 homes. No fatalities were reported, as all residents managed to escape before the fire spread and destroyed their homes. The incident occurred less than a week after a similar fire at Kampung Cempaka, which is also located in the Batu 4 Jalan Apas area near Kampung Kurnia Jaya. The fire on July 26 resulted in the destruction of five homes, damage to three others, and the demolition of two houses to prevent the fire from spreading. In the recent incident at Kampung Kurnia Jaya, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sabah received an emergency call via MERS999 at 9.37am. The fire brigade team from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the scene and arrived at 9.48am to control and extinguish the fire. The operation was led by Senior Fire Officer I Jehrey Ibno and involved 39 firefighters from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), assisted by seven members of the Kampung Titingan Community Fire Team. Efforts to extinguish the fire were challenged by its rapid spread, as all the affected houses were constructed primarily from wooden materials. The fire department implemented both offensive and defensive firefighting strategies in an effort to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. A 300-foot single stream method was employed using one nozzle from a portable pump utilizing seawater as the source, along with two 200-foot dual streams supplied by water from the fire engine. Their efforts were successful as the fire was fully contained by 10.14am and the operation concluded approximately one hour and 30 minutes later, after all potential hazards were addressed. Funding sought to restore historic KK Community Hall

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) will request state funding to restore the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall, which was destroyed by fire on July 29. Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said the building, completed in 1958, will not be demolished due to its historical and cultural significance. It has hosted countless events, including government programmes, festivals, and youth activities. Declared a State Heritage building in 2017, the hall was previously recognised as a cultural heritage site from 1999. Liew, also Chairman of the State Heritage Council, urged for immediate debris clearance and safety measures to protect the public. Landowners urged to evict squatter or risk legal action

Those with vacant land around the State Capital have been asked be more mindful about the presence of squatters on their property and to deal with such unwanted occupants accordingly. A spokesman for City Hall's Enforcement Department said the onus was on landowners to have the encroachers evicted. 'Property-owners, who can't be bothered chasing out the trespassers, risk being compounded as much as RM500 under our (Building) By-laws 1951 (Amendment 1987),' he said. 'This action can be taken because of the illegal structures, including the shanties, which have come up on their land.' He said legal proceedings could be initiated against repeat offenders. 'If the matter is taken to court and they are found guilty, a fine for as much as RM 5,000 can be imposed on them.' Advertisement 'Those convicted may also find themselves liable to a further fine of RM100 fine for every day during which the offence persists.' The spokesman was responding to feedback about a squatter colony which was forming in the hillside off Mile 3½ Jalan Tuaran. A Likas rate-payer spokeout about the haphazard disposal of the garbage on the slope saying that it was having a negative impact on the wellbeing of condominium-owners at Radiant Maisonette. Many of her neighbours had developed coughs from inhaling the smoke and toxic fumes given off when this waste was openly incinerated, according to her. The individual provided Hotline with the pertinent details which were forwarded to the agency. The spokesman said it was in the process of verifying the goings-on at the undeveloped property beside the condominiums on Lorong Hen Paya 5. 'We have working together with our Valuation Department, and the Lands and Survey Department, to obtain the landowner's details,' he said. 'A letter will be sent to him/ her about what has been transpiring on the vacant land.' Should the individual require, he/ she could request to conduct a joint inspection of the property together with City Hall's Enforcement team. 'If squatters are indeed found to have encroached onto the empty land, then, the owner will have to notify the trespassers to vacate the premises. 'Once the grace-period in these notices has expired, the individual can seek for our help in the clearing of his/ her land.' The spokesman stressed, however, that City Hall, and if need be the Police, could merely oversee any efforts to remove the squatters from the property. RM380k Ranau SIB church opens

It was officially opened by SIB Sabah President Datuk Ir Jerry Dusing. It cost RM380,000 and was completed within a year. In his welcoming speech, Ranau Member of Parliament Datuk Jonathan Yasin thanked and congratulated all those involved directly and indirectly. He said because of their sacrifice of time, effort, prayers and perseverance, the church building was finally completed. 'We hope that congregations here can take full advantage of the church building that has been completed for spiritual development and also to increase faith among each other,' he said.
