DK in race to become complete literate district
Mangaluru: To make Dakshina Kannada a completely literate district, the zilla panchayat has initiated a Google survey to ascertain the number of illiterates. Zilla panchayat CEO Anandh K said declaring Dakshina Kannada district as a completely literate district is a significant task. To achieve this, every citizen of the DK district must compulsorily provide information about illiterates in their households by scanning the QR code via Google and submitting the information by June 10, he said. "The sole purpose of the survey is to determine the total number of illiterates in the district, and the public should not be confused or fearful. Those who have already learned or are learning through the literacy department should not be included in the list. The department aims for Dakshina Kannada to be the first district in Karnataka to be declared completely literate," the CEO said. "If illiterates wish to learn, arrangements will be made for their education. Even if they are unable to learn, filling out the Google form is mandatory. The form must include details such as the illiterate person's name, the name of their taluk, village panchayat/town/municipality, the nearest school to their residence, father's name, mother's name, current address, age, gender, mobile number, Aadhaar number, caste, occupation, and whether they are differently-abled," he said. If the literacy rate exceeds 95%, then the district will be declared completely literate as per departmental orders. The CEO said that further information can be obtained from the District Adult Education Officer's office (0824-2451233).

‘Dereliction of duty not criminal offence'
Kolkata: A post office peon, who was arrested in connection with the issuance of 29 passports against 10 , was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on the grounds that his delivering the passports to an unauthorised person was at most a "dereliction of duty". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Justice Suvra Ghosh on May 16 granted bail to the peon, Biswajit Ghosh. He was alleged to be part of a racket that issued 29 passports on the basis of 10 Aadhaar cards. The state counsel told HC that the gang obtained fake passports in exchange for huge amounts of money, and lakhs of rupees were transferred to the members over the last five years. Taking into account Ghosh's statement under Section 161 of CrPC, the judge noted that the only allegation against him was that he delivered 29 passports to co-accused Mohan Shaw in violation of the office memorandum, which mandates that passports should be delivered to the addressee only and not redirected. If not delivered, they should be sent to the sender. "The petitioner appears to have delivered the passports to the co-accused despite there being no authorisation in favour of the co-accused by the passport applicants. Such a lapse on the part of the petitioner can at best be termed as dereliction of duty. No money trail has prima facie been detected connecting the petitioner to the alleged crime," the judge observed. Ghosh's counsel submitted that, being a peon at the post office, he was not aware of the contents of the parcels. Moreover, no money trail could be linked to him during the probe. He was arrested in Jan 2025 for a case registered at Bhadreswar PS on Nov23, 2024.

Rendezvous on Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad ends in Rs 7.45L robbery
Ahmedabad: What seemed like a casual rendezvous with his girlfriend at the Sabarmati Riverfront ended in betrayal and theft for a 52-year-old man. The mason, flush with Rs 7.45 lakh from a recent property sale, was allegedly ambushed and mugged by the woman and two of her associates. The trio fled with his cash and crucial documents. Cops are now combing through CCTV footage for leads. According to the FIR registered at Sabarmati Riverfront (East) police station, the man had recently sold a property in Odhav for Rs 22 lakh. After clearing his home loan and meeting other expenses, he was left with Rs 7.45 lakh in cash, which he kept in a cloth bag. He also had his bank passbooks, cheque book, Aadhaar card, PAN card, and voter ID in the same bag. On Sunday evening, he received a missed call from the woman, whom he had known for about a year. When he returned the call, she invited him over to her residence in Madhavpura. He picked her up on his two-wheeler, and the two went to a Paldi eatery for dinner. It was here, the FIR states, that she first saw the cash in his bag. She suggested going to the Sabarmati Riverfront near Dafnala for a stroll. While walking past the Buddha statue, she suddenly called out the names "Robin and Rishi" — two men who promptly rushed over. As the complainant tried to hold on to his bag, the woman allegedly restrained him, allowing the two men to pull away the bag from his hands and flee the scene. The man approached the police, and an FIR has been filed against the woman and the two men. Police are scanning CCTV footage from the area and trying to identify the suspects. No arrests have been made yet.
