It's time for another bout of PlayStation games with the latest PS Plus Essential drop, and it's coming out swinging with games like Balatro and Warhammer 40K: Boltgun.
PS Plus is back once again, much to the joy of players, especially as right now, the gaming conversation has been all Nintendo Switch 2 and shock-dropped Oblivion Remaster. Of course, PlayStation consistently has loads going for it, but it's hard not to acknowledge that they're a little outside of the wider gaming conversation right now, so it's about time for the company to bite back.
After all, it has done it before – the PS Plus Extra and Premium April 2025 lineup delivered Hogwarts Legacy, which was a huge deal for the service, and for subscribers who were yet to explore the Wizarding World therein. There has still been hope that PS Plus Essential can follow through and perform similarly, even though it has a tendency to offer smaller titles than Extra and Premium, even with RoboCop and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre appearing in the PS Plus Essential April 2025 drop.
The lineup is finally here, though, and even though it didn't match up with our PS Plus Essential May 2025 predictions, it's still a collection of games that players will find something to enjoy in. Here's everything you need to know about the PS Plus Essential May 2025 games drop.

The PS Plus Essential May 2025 games reveal has arrived courtesy of Sony, and as revealed in a new blog post, there are a few more titles for players to get stuck into across PS5 and PS4. Here's every game coming to the service on Tuesday, May 6, as revealed by a new blog post:

This is an incredibly impressive drop that, for once, isn't best represented by its headliner. Balatro is a smash hit that proved that a one-dev Indie title can make it big with a Game Awards Game of the Year nomination, and Warhammer 40K: Boltgun is an exemplary boomer shooter that deserved far more attention at launch.
These games replace RoboCop: Rogue City, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker's Memory, which will leave the service an hour before the new titles appear. Act fast if you want to add these games to your library, as once they've been dropped from the service, you'll have to pay for it yourself.

Nintendo Switch 2 fans expecting secret Christmas game at Summer Game Fest 2025
The big N has joined Sony and Microsoft as an official Summer Games Fest partner, sparking hopes for a big game reveal for the Switch 2. Next week is going to be an exciting time for gamers, since not only is the Nintendo Switch 2 coming out but Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley's replacement for the long-dead E3, takes place almost immediately after. The event kicks off only a day after the Switch 2's launch on Friday, June 6, and will run across the whole weekend, and is set to feature over 60 different publishers and developers. A lot of the usual names will be in attendance, including Sony and Microsoft, but surprisingly so is Nintendo, making this the first time it's been an official partner since 2022. Considering Nintendo was a no-show at the previous two Summer Game Fests, its appearance this year naturally sparks theories that it'll have something to announce during the showcase portion on Friday. Many fans have already been hoping that Nintendo has a secret Switch 2 game planned for this Christmas, especially after the recent confirmation that Pokémon Legends: Z-A – which is coming to both the original Switch and Switch 2 – will launch this October. The period afterwards is notably lacking any major Nintendo releases, particularly Switch 2 exclusives. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, another cross-gen title, is meant to launch this year, but while it's likely to be a critical hit the series has never been a big seller. There are also Switch 2 exclusives Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment and Kirby Air Riders, but they seem even lower profile and strange choices to release in the launch year. While Nintendo is unpredictable, it's still hard to imagine it saving any major reveals for an event like Summer Game Fest, rather than one of its own Nintendo Directs. It typically has Nintendo Directs every June and it is rumoured one could air next week, after the Switch 2's launch – possibly even as a part of Summer Game Fest. The most likely explanation though, is that Nintendo is simply attending to promote the Switch 2 and the games it has already announced. As such, it wouldn't be surprising if Nintendo's only contribution to the Summer Game Fest showcase was a new montage and some kind of on stage appearance. At the time of writing, no new reveals are confirmed or even heavily rumoured for Summer Game Fest, although the list of attendees is promisingly long. Microsoft will certainly have new announcements at its annual Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 8, which will be followed by an in-depth look at The Outer Worlds 2. With any luck, Microsoft will have new trailers for games like Perfect Dark, Gears Of War: E-Day, Fable, and maybe even a new Halo. As for Sony, while PlayStation is listed as one of Summer Game Fest's partners, it's suspected it won't have any big first party reveals for the occasion. Instead, it's rumoured that Sony will have a smaller scale State of Play later this summer, or possibly not until autumn. But what about third party companies? Hopefully, Capcom's presence means a Resident Evil 9 reveal is around the corner, even though it doesn't look like the game will be out till 2026 at the earliest. Square Enix has at least two big games fans hope to see at the show: the long rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake and Kingdom Hearts 4. There is some circumstantial evidence for both making an appearance (the former is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and the latter recently received new screenshots), but that's all there is to go on. The third Final Fantasy 7 Remake game is also a possibility. A Persona 4 remake from Sega and Atlus could very well show up at either the Summer Game Fest showcase or the Xbox one (Xbox landed a marketing deal for Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio after all). More Trending The remake's been rumoured for a while, but just recently one of the original game's voice actors, Yuri Lowenthal, gave its existence away by revealing he won't be coming back for it. His social media post has been deleted now, but one of his co-stars, Erin Fitzgerald, has since corroborated it by saying she's being replaced too. Hideo Kojima's guest appearance guarantees new footage for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, especially since it launches on June 26. He may also have something to show for OD, the new horror game he's working on for Xbox. At the very least, we can rule out seeing anything for his new stealth game Physint since Kojima admitted it won't be ready for another five or six years. The information came from an email sent by EA Entertainment president Laura Miele. If you've been holding off on upgrading to the PS5 Pro or you're just looking to bolster your games library with some bargains, you're in luck. PlayStation has just rolled out some tempting discounts in its annual Days of Play sale. The two-week event runs from 28 May until 11 June at PlayStation Direct, the official online storefront for everything from consoles and accessories to games and more. PlayStation Direct is also where you'll find Flex, a leasing option which gets you a console for as little as £10.99 per month. The headline act in this year's Days of Play sale is a hefty £90 saving on the PlayStation 5 console itself, but we're also seeing price drops of up to 60 per cent across some of the PS5's best games, including remastered classics like The Last of Us and the unmissable platformer Astro Bot. The PSVR2 gets some love in this year's sale too, with a surprise discount of £45 bringing the price of the virtual reality headset (plus the hardware's best game, Horizon: Call of the Mountain) down to £354.99. The new PS5 Pro doesn't miss out on the action either, getting a rare £45 discount for the duration of the two-week sale. If that didn't convince you, maybe this £90 saving will – the time-limited discount applies to both the digital and disc editions of the console. I've highlighted the disc edition here, which is essential if you've got a collection of physical PS4 and PS5 games (or Blu-ray movies) hanging around at home. You'll find the same £90 discount applied to the cheaper, all-digital version of the PlayStation 5. As the name suggests, this model doesn't come with a disc drive but plays games downloaded from PlayStation Direct. Perfect if you've done away with dusty old physical media. Not sure which edition to get? Handily the digital-edition PS5 can be upgraded with a disc drive later if you ever change your mind. That £90 discount on the PS5 also applies to the official DualSense console bundle, which packs an extra wireless controller in the box and is essential if you plan on multiplayer gaming at home. The DualSense controller is an impressive piece of technology in its own right, and uses dynamic vibrations and actuators in the shoulder buttons to simulate everything from weapon recoil to throttle response in racing games. The upgraded version of the original PS5 launched in 2024 and gave Sony's console a massive spec bump, including double the internal storage and more rendering power. 'Featuring 8K graphics, more internal memory, improved ray tracing and upscaling, the PS5 Pro is the best console out right now, blowing the Xbox Series X out of the water,' said tech writer, Alex, in their PS5 Pro review. The definitive edition of the PS5, the PlayStation 5 Pro gets a £45 discount at PlayStation Direct. That's the cheapest we've seen it. The PSVR2 has to be experienced to be believed, teleporting your easily duped brain into spookily convincing virtual reality worlds. My PSVR2 review called it 'one of the best and easiest-to-use VR headsets you can buy today', adding that 'if you own a PS5 and want to tap into the wide and growing library of fascinating VR experiences that already exist, there's no simpler way to do it.' The hardware's standout title is easily Horizon: Call of the Mountain, a stunningly immersive white-knuckle adventure that blends climbing and archery combat. Right now there's £55 off at PlayStation Direct. Still reeling from the second season of The Last of Us? There's no better time to jump back into the games that inspired the show. Both parts of Naughty Dog's celebrated third-person zombie shooter – including the remastered second game – are discounted in the Days of Play sale. Astro Bot is PlayStation at its most Nintendo, a colourful and bouncy 3D platformer that's endlessly delightful and makes clever use of the DualSense controller's new features.
