MUMBAI: Shubman Gill was officially named India's new Test captain on Saturday, tasked with steering the team through a 'massive transition' phase. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain for India's five-Test tour of England in June-July.
The tour promises to be a trial by fire for the youthful leadership duo. At 25, Gill becomes India's fifth-youngest Test captain after Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (21), Sachin Tendulkar (23), Kapil Dev (24), and Ravi Shastri (25). He is also the first Test captain from Punjab since spin great Bishan Singh Bedi, who led India during the 1978-79 series in Pakistan. The five-match series kicks off on June 20 in Leeds.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, 'For the last year or so, we've been looking at Shubman (for leadership). We are hopeful he is the guy who is going to take the team forward. It is a high-pressure job, but he is a terrific player. We wish him all the best.'
Who's that IPL player?
Gill's only notable drawback has been his modest performances in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. Nevertheless, the selectors are backing the talented batter to guide India through this phase.

'It is a massive transition. Both Rohit and Virat were around for a long time,' Agarkar added, alongside co-selector SS Das.
Though out of form in IPL 2025, the 27-year-old Pant brings more experience to the table with 43 Tests. 'Pant is one of our best batters in Test cricket over the last four-five years. A wicketkeeper can read the game well, and that's why he's Shubman's deputy,' Agarkar explained.

A notable omission is veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, who has been ruled out due to fitness concerns.
'He's had a bit of a setback last week and underwent some MRIs. I don't think he was going to be available for all five Tests anyway. His workload is not where it needs to be,' said Agarkar. Seamer Harshit Rana and Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan, both of whom toured Australia in 2024-25, have been dropped. Shreyas Iyer, another Mumbai batter, has also been overlooked.
Maiden Test call-ups for Sai, Arshdeep
Twenty-three-year-old left-hander B Sai Sudharsan , currently the leading run scorer in IPL-2025, and Punjab left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh have earned maiden Test call-ups.
Agarkar clarified that Sudharsan's inclusion wasn't based on IPL form alone: 'Sai has shown the right temperament and has the game to succeed. We've been tracking him for a while.'

Karun Nair, Shardul Thakur recalled
There was also a long-awaited recall for Karun Nair, who last played a Test in March 2017. Pace-bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur also returned to the Test squad following an impressive domestic season.
Representing Mumbai in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, he claimed 35 wickets at 22.62 and scored 505 runs at 42.08, including four fifties and a century. His last Test was against South Africa in Dec 2023.
Bumrah unavailable for full series
Premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah will not be available for all five Tests. 'According to the physios and doctors, he might play three or four matches. He's crucial, so even if available for a few games, he can win us matches,' Agarkar said.
On the retirement of Kohli and Rohit, Agarkar admitted that their absence leaves a void: 'They are stalwarts of Indian cricket. It's tough to replace them but it's also an opportunity for others.

Clarke namedrops Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma while discussing MS Dhoni's IPL future: 'His retirement will be a huge loss'

The 2025 Indian Premier League season ended with Royal Challengers Bengaluru ending an 18-year wait for the title. Rajat Patidar's RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in a close final, thus lifting the trophy for the first time in the franchise's history. The season also saw a highly improved outing from the Mumbai Indians, who qualified for the playoffs under Hardik Pandya's captaincy; they lost to PBKS in the Qualifier 2. However, the fortunes didn't improve for the Chennai Super Kings, as they ended the campaign with a wooden spoon, registering only four losses. All three franchises – RCB, MI, and CSK – feature three of the stalwarts of Indian cricket. While Virat Kohli made an efficient contribution to RCB's title-winning run, Rohit Sharma, too, smashed four half-centuries in the season including a player-of-the-match performance in the Eliminator. For MS Dhoni, however, the season was turbulent, as he was forced to take over the captaincy midway through the campaign after an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Throughout the season, many stated that the 2025 season could be the last we see Dhoni in CSK colours, as the franchise faced heat for outdated tactics and poor performances with the bat. However, former Australia captain Michael Clarke believes that Dhoni is the 'face' of CSK and it is important that he returns for the next season. Speaking on Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, Clarke also spoke about Kohli and Rohit's IPL futures in the same breath. 'I think MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will play in next year's IPL. MS Dhoni is massive. Every time Chennai plays, even in away games, there are more Chennai fans than any other fan. Sponsors, they are there because of MS Dhoni. The fans, they are there because of MS Dhoni,' said Clarke. "He is the king of that franchise. They want him to keep playing and I dont think people realise the impact. When he decides to retire, it will be a huge loss to the franchise," he added. It wasn't a surprise that Clarke also namedropped Kohli and Rohit while speaking on Dhoni's future. Both Indian batters called time on their Test careers last month, leaving the cricketing fraternity in shock. Kohli's retirement was particularly surprising for many, as experts and fans argued that the batter was supremely fit and only needed to rejig his shortcoming against the deliveries outside off-stump.

Caruana took second place with 15.5, while Gukesh settled for third with 14.5. Arjun, another standout Indian performer, ended fifth with 12.5 points. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. "They are all very good (Gukesh and Arjun), but they still need a little bit of time to prepare," Carlsen told ANI. It is a relief to win the tournament. Yuzvendra Chahal played with 'broken ribs' in IPL 2025, says rumoured gf RJ Mahvash

RJ Mahvash (L) Yuzvendra Chahal (R). New Delhi: The Punjab Kings' Yuzvendra Chahal put in a top performance and played well in IPL 2025. He got 16 wickets over his 13 innings, getting two four-wicket hauls. He was an important part of what made the team achieve its objectives. Yuzvendra Chahal missed several games towards the end of Punjab Kings' (PBKS) IPL 2025 season due to a finger injury. Despite this, he played in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians on June 1st, following a match against Rajasthan Royals on May 18th, and also participated in the final. Yuzvendra Chahal's close friend, RJ Mahvash, revealed that the cricketer suffered rib and bowling finger fractures during a recent tournament; the rib injury occurred in the second match, while the finger injury happened later. 'They fought, stayed and played till the last match! And special post to @yuzi_chahal23 because what people don't know is that his ribs got fractured in the second match only and his bowling finger got fractured later, this guy played the entire season with 3 fractures!' RJ Mahvash posted on Instagram. 'We all have seen him screaming and crying in pain but have never seen him giving up! I mean what warrior spirit you have man ?? The team kept fighting till the last ball! It was nothing but an honour to be a supporter of this team this year! Well played boys ?? All the people in these pictures have my heart ??See you next year! Also, many congratulations to RCB and fans for winning the title. Everyone played and worked hard! Cricket , and IPL ..my God again! Truly a festival for us indians.' Yuzvendra Chahal's economical bowling (1/37) restricted the batting team, while Arshdeep Singh and Kyle Jamieson each claimed three wickets (3/40 and 3/48 respectively). RCB's strong finish, fueled by Jitesh Sharma's quick 24, Liam Livingstone's 25, and Rajat Patidar's 26, enabled them to reach 190/9 in their 20 overs. Virat Kohli's 43 provided some stability to the innings. Priyansh Arya's quick 24 runs (from 19 balls, including four boundaries) and Prabhsimran's 26 (from 22 balls, with two sixes) propelled Punjab Kings to a strong start in their run chase, culminating in a 43-run partnership. Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten, match-winning performance against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 propelled Punjab Kings to the final. However, he underperformed in the championship match. Krunal Pandya, Yash Dayal, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's bowling performances (2/17, 1/18, and 2/38 respectively) restricted Punjab Kings to 184/7, despite Shashank Singh's impressive 22 runs in the final over. Josh Inglis and Shashank Singh powered a strong batting performance, scoring 39 runs off 23 balls (Inglis) and 61 not out off 30 balls (Singh), with both players hitting multiple boundaries and sixes. Krunal Pandya's excellent bowling performance secured him the Player of the Match award.
