SPIED: Mercedes-AMG's 550-HP CLA Shooting Brake Will Torment Its Tires

SPIED: Mercedes-AMG's 550-HP CLA Shooting Brake Will Torment Its Tires

Miami Herald17 hours ago
There's no doubt that the vast majority of retail car buyers choose crossovers or SUVs, but not everyone seeking practicality wants a raised ride height, and some automakers are satisfying their desires with new wagons. Mercedes is one of them, preparing a new take on its CLA Shooting Brake, and new spy shots from our photographers in Europe suggest that the AMG variant will be quite the beast.
We'll get into the design momentarily, but first, take a look at the tires - our spies say the rubber on this AMG CLA prototype only had "a few" fast laps of the Nürburgring, yet the tread is heavily worn. The sidewalls also appear to have taken some abuse. This indicates either too much weight, an unrefined stability control system delivering too much power in low-traction scenarios, or both.
The BMW M2 CS, currently the fastest compact car on the Nürburgring, delivers 523 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged straight-six. Being a heavier electric car than any M2 or RS 3, the AMG CLA EQ will reportedly get as much as 550 hp, shared across front and rear axles. These specifications are yet to be confirmed, but they sound right for a high-performance EV.
Like the sedan our spies shot last month, the AMG wagon is getting an adaptive rear spoiler, here situated at the top of the tailgate. This is expected to be manually operable, potentially allowing owners to show off by deploying the spoiler even when parked. Mismatched wheels front and rear are not unsuaul for a prototype, but it's worth noting that the front design looks specific to electric AMGs with its flat-faced rim borders.
The last update we got from our spies said that the electric motor on the front axle would be idle in most scenarios to maximize range, likely disconnecting at highway speeds and in certain modes. Total range is expected to be over 430 miles, but those who buy a car with an AMG badge may have other priorities, and we suspect that there will be a mode to enable drifting. After all, previous CLA and A-Class cars from the AMG division have had the ability.
Hopefully, we'll get confirmation on these details and more soon; production bodywork suggests the CLA AMG EQ will be revealed by the end of the year. Whether the shooting brake will be available in the U.S. remains to be seen, but the non-AMG CLA Shooting Brake has already been revealed, following the launch of the sedan in March.

1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL For Sale With Just 54,282 Miles

Mercedes-Benz's classic lineup is full of nothing but head-turners, with its SL models being some of the most recognizable. The 230SL isn't quite the headline-maker that the 300SL is, but the "Pagoda" Mercedes, so-called for its slightly concave hardtop, still deserves praise in its own right. If you feel the same way, this particular one is for sale on Exotic Car Trader, and you can check out the listing by clicking here. Production of the Mercedes-Benz 230SL ran from 1963 to 1967, with a 2.3L inline-six engine making 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque through either a 4-speed manual or automatic transmission. The engine was based on the M180 inline-six but featured several modifications needed to boost output, like a higher compression cylinder head, bigger valves, a modified camshaft, and a fuel injection pump with six plungers. To further ensure this luxury roadster could glide across the road as smoothly as possible, the hood, trunk lid, door skins, and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. Out of the 19,831 230SLs produced, less than a quarter were sold here in the US. This 230SL is finished in Creme over an Ivory leather interior with two seats, a carpeted luggage area behind them, and the classic Mercedes-Benz instrumentation. The dashboard is free of cracks or defects and even houses the original Becker radio and analog clock. It looks like an extremely cozy and comfortable place to be, the perfect kind of cabin for a grand touring kind of trip. Get a value estimate and list it online with Exotic Car Trader. Click here to learn more. Under the hood of this one is a more powerful, rebuilt 280 cu in engine, presumably out of a Mercedes-Benz 280SL. If it is that engine, then it should make 168 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque through the 4-speed automatic transmission it's made to. The entire car rides on front and rear coil springs with power-assisted recirculating ball steering, with the power part being an available option. The Mercedes-Benz 230SL Pagoda is highly regarded by enthusiasts and collectors, and you'll be hard-pressed not to find one driving around Monterey Car Week or similar automotive events. The fact that this example has a later, more powerful engine swapped into it might make it lose some points to those who prefer an original, untouched example. Those who prefer having more power over a numbers-matching car, though, will find themselves right at home with this one. According to the Hagerty Valuation Tool, prices for 230SLs have been steadily decreasing, with one in Excellent condition commanding around $90,500 and one in Good condition bringing about $56,700. The fact that this low-mileage example is only going for $49,950 makes it a relative bargain if, again, you don't care about the engine swap. No information is provided about the engine swap or the rebuild, so we'd get some more information on that from the seller before getting your wallet out. That said, if you imagine a cross-country road trip at the helm of this 230SL, you'll understand why enthusiasts yelp in excitement whenever one drives by and why this one should excite you. Nico Rosberg on Russell's Contract: 'Toto's Horrible to Negotiate With'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has opened up on the situation that could be unfolding for George Russell amid the delay in talks of his contract extension. Rosberg recalled that team principal Toto Wolff was "horrible to negotiate with" during his days at Mercedes. Russell's current contract expires at the end of the 2025 season, and with the summer break approaching after the Hungarian Grand Prix, a contract extension is nowhere in sight. Wolff was open about the ongoing talks with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen for the future. Still, he recently confirmed ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix that Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will form the team's driver lineup for the 2026 season. But with the delayed discussions, Russell admitted that he couldn't take Wolff's statements at face value. He said: George Russell of Great Britain and Mercedes talks with Mercedes GP Executive Director Toto Wolff at the Mercedes GP Team Photo during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina... George Russell of Great Britain and Mercedes talks with Mercedes GP Executive Director Toto Wolff at the Mercedes GP Team Photo during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina Circuit on November 23, 2023 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. More"No, not really. That was for you [media], not for me. You know, what happens behind closed doors is behind closed doors. Nothing from my side has changed. "I wasn't even aware of this statement until one hour ago, so it's not something I'm looking for, it's not something I really care about." Speaking on the possibility of talks taking place before the summer break, the British driver said: "I don't know. You know, there is still no contract on the table, so to have something done in the space of two weeks is unlikely. It's got to work both ways, and you need to talk about the finer details. "Formula One's evolving so much now — you need to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb to make sure it's all OK. But as I said, there is no rush really from my side, because ultimately, those from the team will decide what they wish to do, and I will be in a position of reacting to what they wish to do. As I said, I'm just focusing on performance, and everything else will sort itself out." Rosberg, who raced for Mercedes from 2010 to 2016, spoke on Russell's situation, highlighting that something was "cooking" at Mercedes. He told Sky Sports F1: "Did you hear George Russell? He was like, 'Oh, no, definitely I won't have a contract signed by Hungary. Like, so definitive that he knows nothing's gonna happen until Hungary, so there must be something cooking there, right?" Addressing that the summer break begins after the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, he said: "Sure, but it's like we're in August then. There's only a couple of months left after that to the end of the season. And he's like, 'oh no, for sure I'm not gonna have a contract yet' - that's a bit extreme, no?" The former champion then highlighted his experience with Wolff when it came to negotiating contract extensions. Rosberg said: "Toto's horrible to negotiate with, because his tactic is to disappear. So when you try... like George now, he's trying to get hold of him, Toto will disappear... George will be trying to write Toto to get him [to get] a move on, or whatever, and Toto disappears." He added: "By the way, this is not a fact; this is just me making it up. But I remember from my time that was his style, just like disappearing, not answering, being hard to reach... and it's horrible, because you're like, 'come on!' "You have nothing, you have no chance... do whatever you can; you need to find a way to cross paths."

George Russell to Sign $40M Contract Extension With Mercedes F1: Report

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. George Russell and Mercedes are said to be finalizing a multi-year contract extension, valued at £30 million (approx. $40 million as per current exchange rates) per annum. The report from the Daily Mail arrives amid news that Max Verstappen will race for Red Bull in 2026. The last few weeks saw several rumors about the four-time world champion's potential move to Mercedes in 2026, given the challenges he faces at Red Bull, and also considering the big change in regulations next year. This, despite his Red Bull contract expiring at the end of 2028. However, the exit clause in Verstappen's Red Bull contract has not been activated, according to the report, which required him to be below the top three drivers in the Drivers' Standings before the summer break. With the current gap of 28 points to Russell, who is in P4, Verstappen will remain in P3 after next weekend's race at the Hungaroring. However, it now appears that he and Mercedes have agreed on the main terms of the contract. Mercedes is reportedly keen on signing the contract before the summer break, but it remains to be seen whether Russell's legal advisors will approve the signing in such a short span of time. With the major reset in F1 next year as the sport enters a new era of regulations with new cars, Mercedes has decided to secure Russell for the future with a multi-year contract extension. Given the delay in talks about the new deal, Russell said that he used the mini break before the race at Spa-Francorchamps to de-stress. He chose to ignore the noise around his contract and is currently focusing on his performance. The Briton said: "And as I said, these last months of going from the position where I was stressed about my future and I was concerned about it, and I've continued to perform — I just think it's in my own hands, so there's no point losing sleep about it. "Mercedes need the best drivers in their race car. And I believe that I'm right up there. I don't think there's many people doing a better job than I am. So, you know, I need them and they need me — and that's how it goes."
