Telangana's caste census sets blueprint for national social justice: Uttam Kumar Reddy
Suryapet/Huzurnagar, May 4 (UNI) Telangana has emerged as a national model in implementing caste census and targeted social justice, said Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy, declaring that the Congress government's landmark initiative offers a governance blueprint for the entire country.
Speaking at review meetings and public events in Kodad and Huzurnagar constituencies on Sunday, Uttam highlighted that Telangana's caste census, completed scientifically and transparently, had compelled the BJP-led Centre to respond to Rahul Gandhi's long-standing demand for a nationwide caste census.
Uttam emphasised that the census was not a routine exercise, but a revolutionary reform, linking data to policy. It led to the historic 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes, backed by comprehensive socio-economic data and legislative action. 'For the first time, backward communities are getting representation based on real numbers,' he said.
Unveiling a statue of freedom fighter Vadde Obanna, the Minister connected the freedom struggle to today's fight for social and economic justice, pledging support to the Vaddera community.
During his Huzurnagar visit, he distributed Rs 2.3 crore in welfare cheques, announced interest-free loans for women, new education and housing schemes, and revealed plans to divert 10 TMC floodwater to Paleru reservoir for agriculture.
Calling the free premium rice distribution scheme a 'historic step,' he said it now benefits 84 per cent of Telangana's population, making Telangana a national leader in welfare and governance.
'Rahul Gandhi showed the way, Telangana walked the path. Now the rest of India must follow,' Uttam added.

Though Raj hinted on an April 19 podcast that he prioritises Maharashtra over personal disagreements, his party quickly clarified that unity on issues does not equate to electoral alliances. The MNS's top leadership has insisted that no formal proposal has been received. On June 5, Raj's son Amit had bluntly remarked that 'alliances are not formed through media sound bites', making it clear that the MNS was unmoved. Thursday's meeting with Fadnavis deepens that perception. Coming just days before both Raj (June 14) and Aaditya's (June 13) birthdays—an occasion Shiv Sena (UBT) workers had tried to frame as symbolic for unity—this unscheduled engagement with Fadnavis suggests Raj may be playing a different game. According to political observers in the state, the meeting cannot be a mere courtesy call as it comes at a time when the civic polls are set to be held and with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) a key target, an MNS-BJP alliance may gain more traction than a Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS one. Responding to the meeting, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former BMC mayor Kishori Pednekar said that it was too early to comment on the matter. 'Let us wait and watch. Both brothers have called their differences minor, and there is also a shared feeling among the MNS and Sena UBT workers. So let us see how it goes.. it would be inappropriate to jump the gun now,' she said. On Thursday, the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had also offered Raj the opportunity to join hands with them. 'Earlier, too, during the Assembly, we had offered to ally. Now also, we are open to an alliance. We still offer Raj saheb to come with us,' Sena leader and minister Sanjay Shirsat had said.

Bengal govt moves Supreme Court seeking revision of order concerning pending DA
Kolkata: The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court seeking revision of the earlier order related to the clearing of pending dearness allowance. State secretariat sources said in the petition at the Apex Court, the state government had also sought certain clarifications on certain points of the order that was delivered last month. However, the sources added, while moving the petition, the state government is carrying out the preparatory process for paying 25 per cent of the pending dearness allowance dues within the stipulated date. "However, the Supreme Court is on vacation now. Therefore, even though the petition has been filed, it may not be listed for hearing until the vacation period is over. So the state government has kept the preparatory process on for paying the 25 per cent of the pending dearness allowances dues within the Supreme Court stipulated deadline, to avoid any possibility of contempt of court," said a senior official of the state government who did not wish to be named. The immediate payment of 25 per cent of the pending dearness allowance dues will result in an immediate drain-out of over Rs 10,000 crore from the state exchequer, as per calculations of the state Finance Department. Currently, government employees in Bengal receive dearness allowances at a rate of just 18 per cent, as against 55 per cent received by their counterparts in the Centre and many other state governments. The state Finance Department employees also apprehend that this drain-out might also impact some monthly payments under different welfare schemes run by the state government. Last month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee indirectly blamed the Union government for the DA crisis. She claimed that since the Union government had frozen payments under various centrally-sponsored schemes to the state government, the latter had to continue those projects with its own money, as a result of which there was constant pressure on the state exchequer.
