Airplane makes emergency landing on iconic PGA Tour, Olympic golf course
An airplane that was scheduled to land at Santa Monica Airport near Los Angeles made an emergency landing on Riviera Country Club on Friday, and incredibly, all three passengers aboard were unharmed and the plane was in good shape.
The incident occurred at approximately just before 1 p.m. near 1250 N. Capri Drive. First responders from both the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Santa Monica Fire Department were quickly on the scene.
This isn't a rarity: Air traffic controllers often steer pilots toward golf courses during controlled crashes. For example, in 2015, Harrison Ford landed his plane on a course next to the same airport, Santa Monica.
Founded in 1926 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Riviera ranks No. 4 on Golfweek's Best list of private courses in California and is No. 17 on the list of classic courses in the United States. It has previously hosted the 1995 PGA Championship, 1998 U.S. Senior Open and 2017 U.S. Amateur. It's also set to host the 2026 U.S. Women's Open and the 2031 U.S. Open as well as the men's and women's golf competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Riviera is the site of the Tour's Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods.

Controversial boxer Imane Khelif skipping competition following World Boxing's new mandatory sex testing

Imane Khelif, the boxer at the center of the Olympic gender controversy, is skipping a boxing tournament in the Netherlands after World Boxing announced mandatory sex testing for all athletes. The Algerian boxer, who won gold at the Paris Games last summer amid scrutiny over her eligibility, did not register in time for the event before applications closed on Thursday. Khelif had intended to return to international competition at the tournament in Hotel Eindhoven before World Boxing announced its new sex testing policy last Friday. Eindhoven Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem criticized World Boxing's decision. 'As far as we are concerned, all athletes are welcome in Eindhoven. Excluding athletes based on controversial 'gender tests' certainly does not fit in with that,' Dijsselbloem wrote in a letter addressed to the Dutch Boxing Federation and International Boxing Federation. 'We are expressing our disapproval of this decision today and are calling on the organization to admit Imane Khelif after all.' 3 Wire Sports, citing medical documents from chromosome tests given by the International Boxing Association (IBA) before the 2022 and 2023 world championships, reported that Khelif's DNA showed 'markers with male karyotypes.' The International Olympic Committee (IOC) derecognized the IBA amid concerns about the organization's governance, financial reliance on Russian state energy firm Gazprom and integrity of the bouts. 5 Imane Khelif celebrated victory against Anna Luca Hamori after the Women's 66kg Quarter-final round match on day eight of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The test was at an accredited lab in New Delhi, called Dr. Lal PathLabs, before the boxing championships, according to 3 Wire Sports. Fox News Digital reached out to World Boxing, the Algerian Olympic Committee and reps for Khelif for comment. The IOC issued a statement to Fox News Digital on Tuesday morning. 'The IOC has always made it clear that eligibility criteria are the responsibility of the respective International Federation,' the IOC said. 'The factors that matter to sports performance are unique to each sport, discipline, and/or event. We await the full details how sex testing will be implemented in a safe, fair and legally enforceable way.' 5 Khelif won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. AFP via Getty Images Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 championships before a gold medal bout over gender eligibility issues. The boxer was thrust into the global spotlight after qualifying for the Olympics, with the gender controversy coming to light. Khelif defeated Angela Carini in the initial fight during the Paris Olympics, and the IOC defended Khelif. As the controversy grew, Khelif kept on winning and eventually was awarded a gold medal. But the IBA doubled down, saying Khelif – along with Taiwan's Lin Yu-thing – were disqualified from the world championships due to 'a result of their failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women's competition, as set and laid out in the IBA Regulations. 5 The boxer was thrust into the global spotlight after qualifying for the Olympics AP This decision, made after a meticulous review, was extremely important and necessary to uphold the level of fairness and utmost integrity of the competition.' The IBA added that Khelif underwent two tests: one in 2022 and the other in 2023. The IBA said Khelif appealed the decision to the Court for Arbitration of Sport but withdrew during the process, making the 'IBA decision legally binding.' Throughout the controversy, Khelif has maintained that their gender is female. Khelif even filed a lawsuit against detractors and critics on social media. 5 Khelif had intended to return to international competition at the tournament before World Boxing announced its new sex testing policy last Friday. REUTERS Before World Boxing made its decision, Khelif was planning on participating in the 2028 Olympics despite President Donald Trump's 'No Men in Women's Sports' executive order – the 2028 games take place in Los Angeles. Khelif told ITV that the policies do not apply to the boxer. 'I will give you a straightforward answer: the U.S. president issued a decision related to transgender policies in America. I am not transgender. This does not concern me, and it does not intimidate me. That is my response,' Khelif told the outlet. 'For me, I see myself as a girl, just like any other girl. I was born a girl, raised as a girl, and have lived my entire life as one.' Fox News' Ryan Gaydos, Jackson Thompson, and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

PGA Tour rookie goes low to share Canadian Open lead

PGA Tour rookie Cristobal Del Solar and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen each posted a nine-under-par 61 to share the first-round lead at the Canadian Open. Olesen and Chilean Del Solar took full advantage on Thursday of TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in the venue's PGA Tour debut. They own a one-shot lead over Cameron Champ. Jake Knapp is alone in fourth at seven-under 63. Shane Lowry of Ireland went out in five-under 30 on his way to a round of 64. He is tied for fifth with Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard and Trey Mullinax. The low Canadian for the day was Taylor Pendrith (65), who set the clubhouse lead in the morning wave before several players passed him by. Defending champion Robert MacIntyre of Scotland is among the several golfers knotted with him in eighth place at five under. Harrison Endycott (67) is the highest-placed Australian, while Aaron Baddeley made a 70. The only other Australian in the field, Karl Vilips, shot a three-over 73 and like Baddeley (tied 96th) will struggle to make the cut. Del Solar birdied 10 of his first 16 holes to pass Olesen for the outright lead and threaten a score of 59. However, he failed to get up and down from the bunker at the par-4 17th hole and took his only bogey of the day. He missed a 15-foot putt for birdie for the outright lead at No.18. Del Solar's claim to fame is a round of 57 he shot on the Korn Ferry Tour in February last year. It was the lowest round ever recorded in a PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament. Olesen, meanwhile, has eight wins on the DP World Tour but is seeking his first title in the United States. Two-time Canadian champion Rory McIlroy is in danger of missing the cut after shooting a one-over 71, which he ended with consecutive bogeys at Nos.8 and 9. The Northern Irishman is playing for the first time since a T47 finish at the PGA Championship.

Paraguayan Olympian Luana Alonso fires back at country's officials year after allegedly creating ‘inappropriate atmosphere' amid Olympic Village exit

Paraguayan Olympic swimmer Luana Alonso shot back at her country's claims she was kicked out of the Olympic Village last year for creating an inappropriate environment, slamming it as a lie and 'false rumors.' Alonso, 21, competed for her native Paraguay in the women's 100m Butterfly at the 2024 Summer Games, but failed to reach the semifinals. During her time in France, Alonso was accused of creating an 'inappropriate atmosphere,' forcing the Paraguayan Olympic Committee to remove her from the other athletes. Advertisement The two-time Olympian reportedly became problematic after she failed to make it out of the heat races and took a day trip to Disneyland Paris instead of supporting her compatriots, angering the country's Olympic officials. She documented her trip to the theme park on social media, posing for a picture wearing Mickey Mouse ears and holding a champagne flute. 'Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,' Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, said in a statement published by The Sun at the time. 6 Alonso points at the Olympic Rings hanging on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, during the 2024 Olympics. 'The Paraguayan Olympic team claimed I created an 'inappropriate environment simply because I decided I didn't want to swim anymore,' she said. 'They tried to take my accreditation away, but that's not something they had the right to do. I chose not to hand it over and apparently that was 'inappropriate' to them.' Her dress style, which featured 'skinny clothing' and socializing with athletes, was also noted as a distraction during her stay at the Olympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis. She made headlines before the start of the Paris Games when she debuted a new tattoo on her hips of the five Olympic rings. Facebook /Luana Alonso After she was removed from the Olympic Village, Alonso reportedly checked into a Parisian hotel and visited high-end stores and restaurants. The Southern Methodist University alum claimed Paraguayan swimming officials had pleaded for her to return to the pool for the Pan American Junior Games being held in the country's capital, Asunción, in August. 'If I had been treated with basic respect, maybe I wouldn't have stepped away,' she added. Alonso says she always had 'given everything' for her country but when she stood up for herself it was viewed as a problem. The two-time Olympian threatened to sue news outlets who ran stories about the accusations brought against her by the Paraguayan Olympic Committee. Advertisement 'I'm seriously considering legal action against the magazines and media outlets spreading false rumors like that I was expelled from the Olympic Village. Really? Who came up with that nonsense? Well that it's not true,' she wrote. Alonso also teased that she would be releasing a video to better explain her thinking. 'Seriously this (sic) lies are wild and affecting my life and that's why I decided I'm keeping my life lowkey,' she said. Alonso retired from competitive swimming shortly after the Olympics concluded, but made a sudden about-face weeks later when she returned to training. 'But I don't know if I will be back to competitive swimming.'
