Plane makes emergency landing at Riviera Country Club, golf site of 2028 Olympics

The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles had an unexpected visitor Friday. Video posted to social media Friday afternoon shows a small aircraft made an emergency landing on the historic club's golf course in Pacific Palisades. While the landing was bumpy, the plane and its occupants appeared to be unharmed. This happened at Riv today. I pray I'm never this late for a tee time, but I do pray for the means to pull up this way if I was 😂 — Roger Steele (@RogerSteeleJr) May 2, 2025 Per Golfweek, the plane was scheduled to land at Santa Monica Airport, a few miles southeast from Riviera. First responders from both the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Santa Monica Fire Department reportedly arrived on the scene soon after. Golf course landings are not uncommon with planes that need to make emergency landings in urban areas, due to their open terrain and relative lack of people. One of the most famous instances of that was when actor Harrison Ford made a much rougher landing at Penmar Golf Course, right next to the same Santa Monica Airport. Friday's landing also wasn't even the worst airplane mishap of the day in the L.A. area, as a different plane crashed into fencing after overshooting the runway at the Fullerton Airport. Riviera Country Club is the annual site of the Tiger Woods Foundation's Genesis Invitational and has hosted three majors with the 1948 U.S. Open, the 1983 PGA Championship and the 1995 PGA Championship, as well as the 2017 U.S. Amateur. The club is set to be one of the most high-profile in the world over the next few years, as the golf site for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, as well as the 2031 U.S. Open and 2026 U.S. Women's Open. Hopefully, planes won't be an issue for those.

Airplane makes emergency landing on iconic PGA Tour, Olympic golf course

Airplane makes emergency landing on iconic PGA Tour, Olympic golf course An airplane that was scheduled to land at Santa Monica Airport near Los Angeles made an emergency landing on Riviera Country Club on Friday, and incredibly, all three passengers aboard were unharmed and the plane was in good shape. The incident occurred at approximately just before 1 p.m. near 1250 N. Capri Drive. First responders from both the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Santa Monica Fire Department were quickly on the scene. This isn't a rarity: Air traffic controllers often steer pilots toward golf courses during controlled crashes. For example, in 2015, Harrison Ford landed his plane on a course next to the same airport, Santa Monica. Founded in 1926 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Riviera ranks No. 4 on Golfweek's Best list of private courses in California and is No. 17 on the list of classic courses in the United States. It has previously hosted the 1995 PGA Championship, 1998 U.S. Senior Open and 2017 U.S. Amateur. It's also set to host the 2026 U.S. Women's Open and the 2031 U.S. Open as well as the men's and women's golf competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Riviera is the site of the Tour's Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods.

A video of a private plane crash landing on a golf course has surfaced on X. The shocking incident took place at the iconic Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. 'This happened at Riv today. I pray I'm never this late for a tee time, but I do pray for the means to pull up this way if I was,' an X user wrote while sharing the video of the moment. In the video, an individual is heard yelling 'Holy schnikes' as the small aircraft barrels towards him. Just in a few seconds, a cart driver says, 'I'm moving, I'm moving,' as the plane makes a rough landing on the uneven grounds of the golf course. An individual posted, 'Solid piloting on display here.' Another added, 'Omg that's freaking awesome.' A third posted, 'Look up tail number. Flew to Santa Monica today. From Modesto.' A fourth wrote, 'Imagine if we didn't have cameras, we couldn't believe this story.' The Los Angeles Fire Department issued a statement following the incident. 'LAFD and Santa Monica Fire Department resources responded to a plane (unknown size) which landed safely at Riviera Country Club,' the department wrote. It added that the aircraft was diverted from Santa Monica Airport, but the reason for that is still unknown. According to the department's statement, the plane had three occupants, and all of them escaped unharmed. According to its official website, this 1926-founded golf course is 'one of the top 50 golf courses in the world and a top 25 in the United States.' It has also been selected as the official site of the 2028 Olympics golf tournament. In addition to gold, Riviera also has 24 tennis courts.
