Petronas expects set-up of proposed ENI JV will take one to two years

KUALA LUMPUR :Petronas expects to take one to two years to set up a proposed joint venture with Italian energy group Eni on some upstream assets in Indonesia and Malaysia, an executive of the state-run energy company said on Tuesday. The companies signed a pact in February on the joint venture that aims to combine about 3 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) of reserves with an additional 10 billion boe of potential exploration upside. "The whole idea of having this as a combination is to have an independent entity created in order to be self-financed," Mohd Jukris Abdul Wahab, executive vice president and chief executive of upstream for Petronas, said at the Energy Asia conference in the Malaysian capital. Guido Brusco, Eni's chief operating officer, said, "This is a game changer for us in the region. We are combining assets from Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly in the Kutai Basin." Eni's Kutai Basin assets include developments in the Northern and Gendalo-Gandang hubs, which have massive gas reserves. Petronas has said it was looking to include oil and gas projects in Indonesia's Kutai Basin in the planned joint venture, proposing to swap interests for its assets in Malaysia and Indonesia with Eni's blocks there.

BOJ decides to slow bond taper, keeps rates steady

TOKYO :The Bank of Japan kept interest rates steady on Tuesday and decided to slow the pace of reduction in its bond purchases from next fiscal year, signalling its preference to move cautiously in normalising still-easy monetary policy. As widely expected, the central bank maintained short-term interest rates at 0.5 per cent by a unanimous vote at the two-day policy meeting that ended on Tuesday. It also decided to make no changes to an existing bond taper plan that runs through March 2026 and laid out a new plan beyond April next year. Under the plan for fiscal 2026, the BOJ will reduce monthly bond buying by 200 billion yen each quarter so that the size of purchases will fall to around 2 trillion yen by March 2027.

KKR buys Australian off-grid power specialist Zenith Energy

[SYDNEY] KKR has agreed to buy Australia's Zenith Energy, a provider of off-grid power systems, from a group including Pacific Equity Partners Pty, Opseu Pension Trust and Foresight Group Holdings. The investment firm did not provide a value for the deal, but said in a statement that it followed Zenith's completion of a A$1.9 billion (S$1.6 billion) refinancing that provided the company with more than A$1 billion of capital to support the development of new projects. KKR will make the investment from its Asia-Pacific Infrastructure Investors II Fund. KKR paid A$1.7 billion at 12 times contracted earnings, according to two people close to the deal. KKR and Zenith declined to comment on the price. Zenith has more than 710 megawatts of contracted capacity with resource-sector clients and urban microgrids, according to Tuesday's statement. The Perth-based company is seeking to help Australia's mining sector speed up efforts to reduce its emissions, chief executive officer Hamish Moffat said. 'Zenith has established itself as one of the clear leaders in deploying and managing hybrid power solutions in Australia, a priority market for KKR in Asia Pacific,' said Andrew Jennings, KKR's managing director and head of Australia & New Zealand Infrastructure. 'Zenith's position at the forefront of the energy transition, coupled with its long-term relationships with strategic, high-quality counterparties, make it an ideal investment for our Asia-Pacific infrastructure platform.' The transaction is expected to close late this year. BLOOMBERG
