Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo named hardest players they've ever faced
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have come up against some of the best defenders in the world but there are two players who stand out as the most difficult they've faced
Football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have spoken out about the toughest players they've had to face off against during their illustrious 20-year careers. These titans of the pitch have encountered their fair share of formidable opponents as they graced top-flight football.
Messi, now dazzling for Inter Miami, singled out a somewhat unexpected name tied to his spell in Barcelona – that of RCD Mallorca's right-back Pablo Maffeo.
The Spanish player, who briefly featured for Manchester City before moving on loan to Girona, left a lasting impression on Messi when they squared off in 2017.
In his first season in the prime league at just 20, Maffeo's robust marking of Messi during the match was notable even though he couldn't prevent the Catalan club from securing a 3-0 triumph. Three years down the line, Messi honoured Maffeo with high praise in an interview with DAZN, the Express reports.
"Pablo Maffeo, when he was at Girona, was the hardest defender I've ever faced," conceded Messi in a 2020 conversation. "I've never been one to complain. I believe that physical contact is part of football."
For Maffeo, 27, to earn such accolades from an icon like Messi was extraordinary. Reflecting on Messi's words, he shared with The Athletic: "It's the best recognition from the best player in history. We lost that game, but the experience will always mark my life."
Reflecting on his days as a dazzling right-winger before shining on the left at Real Madrid and transforming into a striker, Portugal skipper Ronaldo, 40, has faced a host of challenging opponents in his illustrious career.
Choosing his most formidable rival wasn't easy, but it was during his tenure with Manchester United that Ronaldo reminisced about one player he found particularly tough - Ashley Cole. Despite clashing 14 times and the Red Devils legend besting Cole in eight encounters, it was the gritty showdowns he remembered.
Speaking to Coach Mag in 2016, Ronaldo confessed: "Over the years I had some great battles with Ashley Cole. He does not give you a second to breathe. He was such a tenacious player when he was at his peak, quick, tough in the tackle. You knew it would never be an easy game."
Cole, who squared off against Ronaldo while with Arsenal and Chelsea, held mutual respect for the Al-Nassr striker's all-round prowess and relentless drive to succeed. "He was willing to learn and adapt," said the former England left-back.
"He wanted to be the best player in the world and became a machine. He had everything. He could dribble, he could sprint behind, he could leap and jump and head a ball, he could go inside, he could go outside.
"So I say he always gave me nightmares, but you try to work each other out and we got the best of each other at times. Whenever I hear his name or see his face, I always think of when he made me do the splits!"

Rangers linked Davide Ancelotti ‘makes major decision on his future as he lands new job'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS managerial contender Davide Ancelotti has reportedly joined his legendary father Carlo at Brazil. Ancelotti was one of the front runners to take over from Philippe Clement at Ibrox, but missed out on landing the job to former Southampton boss Russell Martin. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims on Friday, Davide Ancelotti has made a major decision on his future and is teaming up with his dad Carlo once again. He posted on Twitter: "Davide Ancelotti joins Brazil staff with his father Carlo, decision made and contract signed." Ancelotti has already been his father's number two at Real Madrid, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Everton. But it appeared he was set to go out on his own at Rangers after months of speculation linking him with the top job at Ibrox. He had indicated that Rangers were his preferred choice but had a number of options to consider, with Spanish second division side Deportivo and Swiss outfit Basel reportedly interested. One of those other opportunities also included rejoining his father at Brazil after leaving Real Madrid and that's the decision he has reportedly made. Carlo Ancelotti's first match in charge of Brazil ended in a 0-0 draw with Ecuador on Thursday, which he still described as a "special" occasion. Chances were at a premium, with Brazil only mustering two shots on target. He said after the game: "I think the pitch conditions here made it a bit tricky to play a more intricate game from the back. "It was harder to control the ball. "That said, we had two very good chances, with Vinicius Jr, with Casemiro in the second half. "Yes, we could've done better in attack, but you've also got to take into account the strength of the opponent. "Ecuador played a very good game, just as we did... The journeys here are really long, that takes its toll a bit." Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager The draw keeps them fourth in World Cup qualification in South America with an encounter against Paraguay to come. The top six automatically qualify for next year's showpiece. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

However, Barcelona officials have outright rejected the approach, with manager Hansi Flick keen to keep hold of the two-time Spain international. Barcelona are interested in bringing in a new forward this summer, but are thought to consider Liverpool winger Luis Diaz as their number one target - who has admitted he is talking to other clubs. Nkunku, 27, looks destined for a Stamford Bridge exit after making just nine Premier League starts under Enzo Maresca this season. Lopez has also struggled for consistent minutes at Barcelona, falling behind the likes of Dani Olmo, Raphinha and Gavi in the pecking order for the Catalan giants. However, he is still understood to be considered a crucial part of Barcelona's future - picking up 18 goal contributions across all competitions this season. Lamine Yamal's true feelings on Cristiano Ronaldo as he shows where heart lies
Lamine Yamal's Spain will go head-to-head with Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final, and the 17-year-old has made his true feelings about the icon clear Lamine Yamal has labelled Cristiano Ronaldo a 'legend,' but he will ignore niceties and focus on victory when his Spain meets Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final. The 17-year-old phenom inspired his national side to an enthralling 5-4 semi-final victory over France on Thursday, scoring a second-half brace and sealing a spot in Sunday's final. Joining them in the Munich showpiece will be Portugal, who bested Germany 2-1 in their semi-final matchup on Wednesday. The ever-talismanic Ronaldo scored his 137th international goal in the match, tapping home the winner in the 68th minute. The final will mark the first occasion that the iconic Ronaldo and prodigious Yamal have faced one another. The 40-year-old is still plying his trade with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, while his upcoming adversary is starring for Barcelona. When the teenager was posed a question about his fabled opponent, Yamal showed Ronaldo respect, but indicated that his eyes will firmly be on a Spanish triumph and not elsewhere. "Cristiano is a legend and we all have a lot of respect for him, but I will do my job, which is to win the match," Yamal told reporters after Spain's victory against France. "We know what people expect from us. We have to keep winning. The hardest thing in football is to win and win, always win. And that is what we are going to try." The youngster showed off his impeccable attitude further when he opened up about the mindset he heads into big matchups with, admitting he likes to do his talking on the field. "I always tell my mum that when there are big games, I'm going to give my all, that's what motivates me and what I play football for, what I get up in the morning for," he added. "The important thing is to talk on the pitch." Yamal's opponent, Ronaldo, has mirrored the teenager's praise and admitted eight months ago that the Barcelona-born forward would lead a new generation of superstars. "He's got a huge potential," Ronaldo stated on his UR YouTube channel, speaking about Yamal in 2024. "I see a lot of talent. But let's see during his journey what's going to happen. "I think he'll make it. He will be the best player of this new generation. He needs luck because he is very young. I hope he doesn't have any problems. He is in a context that helps him a lot. Spain's national team is really good." Much like Yamal, however, any compliments will go out the window when Ronaldo's Portugal line up on Sunday, and the icon's coach, Roberto Martinez, has urged his players to emulate the personality of their Germany win in the final. "We need to enjoy the victory – we won for the first time in a while against Germany. Tactically we were exceptional and our commitment helped... it was a team victory," manager Martinez stated. "Now we can recover and evaluate. We want another performance with personality in this shirt." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
