49ers Running Back Room Clears Top 15 in Recent Rankings
49ers Running Back Room Clears Top 15 in Recent Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The San Francisco 49ers are hoping for a resurgent season in 2025 from running back Christian McCaffrey.
What the 49ers need is the 2023 version of McCaffrey, who led the league with 1,459 rushing yards and added 14 rushing touchdowns. He caught 67 passes for 564 yards with another seven touchdown catches.

Expectations are sometimes different from reality, especially when McCaffrey is recovering from two separate injuries that sidelined him for 13 games last season.
But regardless of McCaffrey's recent injury history, the San Francisco backfield is ranked No. 12 in ProFootballFocus' recent grades.
"The 49ers are one of the hardest teams to project for this list, given Christian McCaffrey's recent injury history," wrote PFF's Dalton Wasserman. "Across 2022 and 2023, he was the NFL's highest-graded running back. His injuries in 2024 limited him to just 167 snaps and a 71.3 PFF overall grade. McCaffrey is supremely talented, but he enters his age-29 season with more questions than ever.
"Isaac Guerendo did a decent job in spot duty last season, earning a 67.2 PFF rushing grade. The team also added fifth-round rookie Jordan James, who recorded an elite 95.7 PFF rushing grade over the past two seasons at Oregon."

Don't expect McCaffrey to be reintroduced to the offense slowly; however, that is the custom sometimes when players return from injury.
Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak thinks McCaffrey will be fine if the team is smart with his usage.
"You're always cognizant of the reps you're putting on guys, especially in practice, when we do that with Christian all the time, we monitor his reps, and you have to be smart when you're in games," Kubiak continued. "You have to be cognizant of how much they're out there.

Cowser's 3-run homer and Morton's solid outing lead Orioles past Rays
TAMPA, Fla. — Colton Cowser hit a three-run homer and Charlie Morton allowed one run over six innings in his 400th major league game as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Thursday night at Steinbrenner Field. With two outs in the sixth, Cowser's drive off Edwin Uceta broke a 1-all tie. Cowser, who also doubled, has homered in three straight games. Ryan O'Hearn drove in the other Baltimore run, and Gunnar Henderson scored twice for the Orioles. Morton (4-7) started in his 36th career ballpark, most among active pitchers. He allowed six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Four relievers blanked the Rays over the final three innings. Félix Bautista retired the side in the ninth to earn his 15th save. Yandy Diaz doubled and singled to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for Tampa Bay. Drew Rasmussen (6-5) allowed two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He had won five straight decisions. In the top of the seventh, Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge was carted off the field in a frightening scene after he was struck by a foul ball in the dugout. Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman fouled a pitch into the Tampa Bay dugout and it hit Bigge, a 27-year-old right-hander currently on the injured list with a lat strain. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived to attend to Bigge. After several quiet minutes as Rays players knelt in the field, Bigge was placed on a backboard and carted off. He gave a thumbs-up gesture as fans rose for a standing ovation. The game resumed after a delay of nearly nine minutes. With two outs in the eighth, Orioles reliever Bryan Baker walked Junior Caminero to load the bases in a 4-1 game, then retired Jake Mangum on a flyball to escape the jam. Tampa Bay went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Baltimore opens a series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night with RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4, 3.38 ERA) facing LHP Max Fried (9-2, 1.89). Rays RHP Shane Baz (6-3, 4.54 ERA) starts Friday at home against Detroit RHP Jack Flaherty (5-7, 4.03). ___ AP MLB:

Five Eagles Named To All-Quarter Century Team
Five Eagles Named To All-Quarter Century Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Since 2000, the Philadelphia Eagles have become one of the better rosters in the league. They have reached the Super Bowl four times, been to the conference championship game eight times, and won two titles. Advertisement Along the way, they have seen some of the league's biggest stars don the midnight green uniform. Five stars found their names on the Quarter Century Team made by ESPN Thursday afternoon. Right tackle Lane Johnson, center Jason Kelce, safety Brian Dawkins, and receivers Terrell Owens and Julio Jones were all named to the prestigious honor. Of the five names, Owens and Jones lasted less than two full seasons with the organization. Johnson, Kelce, and Dawkins are all-time fan favorites for the Eagles. Dawkins is a Hall-of-Fame safety and was a face of Philadelphia sports during the 2000s. His intensity brought a new flare to the organization. Kelce and Johnson, meanwhile, are two of the better offensive linemen in league history. Kelce was a former sixth-round steal out of Cincinnati. He became a starter right away and later an All-Pro. He's just the third member in Eagles history to be named an All-Pro six times. Advertisement As for Johnson, the former fourth overall pick has become one of the best right tackles in league history. His work as an athletic freak has allowed him to continue to be among the elite players in the game even into his 30s. All five Eagles have made their mark on NFL history. Although the majority of the players on the list are retired, making the All Quarter Century Team is a great honor. And it's another reminder of how good the Eagles have been recently.
