Coronation Street 'robbed' at British Soap Awards, say fans

Glasgow Times06-06-2025
The glitzy event, which took place at Hackney Empire in London last weekend, got off to a tricky start as ITV encountered technical difficulties for its broadcast last night (June 5).
ITV1 displayed a message apologising for the delay as the show started almost 10 minutes late.
Hosted by Jane McDonald, the biggest soaps in the country went head-to-head for best scenes, performances and storylines.
However, some viewers were disgruntled that their favourite soap didn't scoop as many awards as hoped.

Coronation Street fans say soap was 'robbed'
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, viewers were quick to react to the string of awards won by EastEnders and not Corrie.
Two particular awards not being won by the ITV soap caused fans to react the most.
Best Dramatic Performance was won by Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell in EastEnders, and Best On-Screen Partnership went to Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter who play Patrick and Yolande.
However, fans argued that Coronation Street's Peter Ash should have won for his MND portrayal and Alison King and Vicky Myers for their on-screen partnership, with their characters affectionately known as 'Swarla' on social media.
'Swarla should have won!' one person tweeted.

Someone commented: 'Swarla will always be our best partnership…they are a powerhouse couple. So proud of them.'
'Corrie has raised the bar for relationships and storylines over the past year, they should have won. Corrie has been robbed tonight,' another added.
While in relation to Peter's powerful storyline, one person said: 'Gutted Peter Ash didn't win best dramatic performance.'
Another added: 'Cannot believe Corrie didn't get more awards. Peter Ash especially his acting was worth an Oscar, let alone a soap award.'
Commenting on ITV's techincal difficulties at the start of the show, one person added: "Well what a cracking start...just chaos and then EastEnders takes all the awards from Corrie."
Who won Best British Soap?
EastEnders won eight prizes at the British Soap Awards.
The BBC soap also took home the highly anticipated award for Best British Soap, with the trophy presented by Only Fools and Horses actor Sir David Jason.

Strictly Come Dancing pro warns celeb 'don't ever do it' ahead of line-up announcement

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A Strictly Come Dancing pro playfully warned Emma Willis not to appear on the BBC hit competition after her unique dance move proved not to be a hit. During Monday's instalment of This Morning, Emma Willis and Joel Dommett stepped up to the plate to present while Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard took a break to enjoy their summer break. The duo presented the day's top stories and welcomed several guests, including former Strictly pros James Jordan, Brendan Cole, Pasha Kovalev, and Ian Waite. The professional dancers appeared on the ITV hit daytime show to promote their forthcoming live tour, The Return of the Legends, a move away from the BBC show. Just moments before they got into the interview, Emma was keen on sharing her passion for Strictly and wasted no time sharing her unique dance move. (Image: ITV) The TV presenter revealed: 'I'm a bit of a sofa dancer.' Everyone looked confused as she asked, 'Have you ever heard of one of them?' She explained: 'I love Strictly and I'm a massive fan.' While demonstrating the move, she shuffled from side to side on the sofa and continued: 'I sit there and watch it and do this on the sofa while watching them dance, and my toes are pointing.' She went on:' And before I know it, everyone is looking at me, thinking 'what are you doing?'" Before she could finish her sentence, James, who appeared as a professional on Strictly from 2006 to 2013, jumped in and joked: 'If you do it like that, don't ever do Strictly.' Everyone burst out laughing as Brendon also joked, 'I had a couple of partners like that.' (Image: ITV) It comes as Strictly Come Dancing fans patiently wait to find out which stars will appear on the dance floor for the new series. With the launch fast approaching, the BBC is keeping the line-up firmly under wraps. "More details regarding the upcoming series, including the celebrity contestants taking part, will be announced in due course," the BBC has said of this year's Strictly stars, adding that we can expect to see "another spectacular series" when it kicks off in a few weeks. However, that hasn't stopped viewers from sharing their predictions. If the rumoured line-up is anything to go by, fans are in for one of the best series yet. This year's names heavily tipped to take to the dancefloor include winners of huge shows such as Love Island star Dani Dyer, as well as Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and ITVX

Rockstar Terry 'Superlungs' Reid who turned down Led Zeppelin dies aged 75

Iconic rocker Terry Reid, known as 'Superlungs' due to his powerful singing voice, has died at the age of 75. The singer, who famously turned down the chance to be in both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, was forced to cancel a number of shows last month due to medical issues arising from recent treatment for cancer. It has now been confirmed that Reid has died due to complications from cancer. An announcement was shared on social media in early July, stating: 'Due to medical issues arising from recent treatment for cancer, Terry has had to postpone his autumn 2025 UK, Irish, and Norwegian tour. 'Terry is especially upset about this as his 2024 tour was so successful and he had been looking forward to playing some new towns and venues plus old faves, as well as his first ever dates in Norway.' Born on 13 November 1949 in St Neots, Huntingdonshire, Reid emerged in the early 1960s as frontman of Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers. He rose to prominence after supporting the Rolling Stones on their 1966 British tour, quickly gaining attention for his powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. More Trending Reid was a trailblazing part of the London music scene in the 1960s, and was close friends with Jimi Hendrix, with whom he often played. Despite being offered the vocalist spot for the newly formed Led Zeppelin by Jimmy Page and a chance to front Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore, Reid opted to pursue his own path. Instead of joining either band, he recommended Robert Plant (and even John Bonham) to Page – decisions that ultimately shaped rock music's trajectory. Throughout his career, Reid released seven studio albums, including the 1976 cult classic Seeds of Memory. This is a breaking news story, more to follow soon… Check back shortly for further updates.
