Himachal CM launches sapling drive with a target to cover 9,000 hectares in forests

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the 76th state-level Van-Mahotsav in the Kanlog area of Shimla by planting a deodar sapling. The plantation drive has a budgetary provision of Rs 100 crore with a target to cover 9,000 hectares in forests. The Chief Minister also launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna across all Assembly constituencies and virtually interacted with ministers and legislators and discussed forest conservation and afforestation measures in detail. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said Van Mahotsav highlighted the importance of forests, often called the Earth's lifeline. 'This year, around 9,000 hectares of forests would be planted with saplings that comprised fruit-bearing ones.' He said the government has been working to protect and enrich rich biodiversity. These efforts would contribute to achieve the target of increasing 30 per cent forest cover by 2030. The Chief Minister said the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna would not only promote forest development but also enhance public participation and strengthen the rural economy. Under this scheme, mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self-help groups and joint forest committees would plant and look after saplings on one to five hectares of designated forest land for five years. This year, saplings are being planted across 1,000 to 1,500 hectares at a cost of Rs 20 crore. An additional Rs 1.2 lakh per hectare is being provided for sapling maintenance, said the Chief Minister. He said the government is also focusing on financial discipline for 'vyavastha parivartan' and introducing reforms in the working of the Forest Department. The officers were being encouraged to dedicate more time to fieldwork related to forest expansion and conservation rather than office routines. The Chief Minister said the government is implementing schemes that provide rural communities with self-employment opportunities near their homes, thereby strengthening their livelihoods. He said the initiatives of the government in natural farming are also being recognized and appreciated nationally. He gave cheques for Rs 1,00,000 each to mahila mandals for sapling plantation under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna. Also cheques for Rs 50,000 each have also been distributed under JICA project to the beneficiaries for livelihood.

Himachal CM inaugurates first-ever Zero Waste tribal festival in Keylong

Shimla, Aug 14 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu virtually inaugurated a tribal festival at Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti district on Thursday. He also laid foundation stones for five bridges being built in Udaipur sub-division under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana Phase 3. Kick-starting the festival from Shimla, Sukhu said this is the first time that the event is being organised on the theme of 'Zero Waste". The chief minister said that the event, which will conclude on August 16, would promote environmental conservation and also showcase the district's unique art and culture. 'The festival symbolises the commitment to preserving the district's heritage. It will also inspire people to celebrate responsibly," he said. The chief minister said that climate change has posed serious challenges to the country, and Lahaul-Spiti was no exception. Unusually heavy rainfall in the district is a major cause of concern, he said. 'The state government is taking all possible measures to provide relief during disasters. We are working with the Central government to ensure environmental protection. A team of scientists, with the Centre's support, is conducting a detailed study on the increasing incidents of cloudbursts," he said. Lahaul-Spiti has emerged as a model district in terms of women's empowerment, he said, adding that traditional products of the area would be promoted under the 'HimIra' brand. Sukhu also laid foundation stones for five bridges being built in Udaipur sub-division with an outlay of Rs 36.41 crore. Retired banker trapped in 42-hour ‘digital arrest for links with Pahalgam terrorists'; almost loses Rs 70 lakh

Bareilly: Bareilly: A 60-year-old woman, who recently retired from her job as a computer operator in a public sector bank, was kept under "digital arrest" by fraudsters for nearly 42 hours after they accused her of using her Aadhaar to buy a satellite phone and forge IDs for terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack, police said on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The scammers — posing as anti-terrorism squad, National Investigation Agency and Enforcement Directorate officers — contacted her in Bareilly, coerced her into arranging Rs 70 lakh for a "non-involvement certificate" before her brother's alert led to timely police intervention on Wednesday. Police located the caller's location to Meerut but investigations revealed that the number was issued on forged ID. Officers said the woman had been coerced into believing that the "agencies had issued arrest warrants against her as she had links to the terrorist attack" in which 26 civilians were killed. The scammers produced three forged documents — one purporting to be an arrest order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 — and threatened her with arrest unless she complied with their demands. The woman panicked and followed their instructions. The scammers told her to provide details of her assets, including gold, income tax returns and valuables. They insisted she secure a "non-involvement certificate" from them to prove her innocence, and she began arranging approximately Rs 70 lakh. When her brother became alarmed by her distressed messages, he contacted the police, who traced the calls and located the woman. Officers confronted the accused, who failed to answer questions, cut all communication and deleted their messages and records. The woman told TOI, "The cops, arriving on time, prevented my money loss. I want to urge everyone that digital arrest is nothing but a threat used by these accused to dupe people. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Bareilly (city) SP Manush Pareek said, "Operation Mahadev, the counter-terror operation launched after the Pahalgam attack, has been exploited by scammers in such cases to make their threats appear credible. We have initiated a probe and will trace their whereabouts soon. In such digital arrest cases, one should not panic and should immediately inform the police."
