The political legacy of veteran Communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan will be embraced by future generations and carried across Kerala, K.K. Rema, MLA, has said.
Speaking at a memorial meeting of VS organised by the Prof. M.N. Vijayan Memorial Committee in front of the Thrissur Corporation office, on Saturday, Ms. Rema alleged that the CPI(M) leadership conspired in the killing of her husband T.P. Chandrasekharan because he followed the politics VS championed, a politics of resistance and people's empowerment.
'Kerala's future generations will produce thousands of VSs. His politics will continue to be propagated from one generation to another,' she said.
Veteran journalist M.P. Surendran, addressing the gathering, described VS as a political personality unmatched in Kerala's history. 'He upheld the politics of resistance in the face of social decay, and he always stood by the poor and the marginalised. His memory will forever ignite struggles across Kerala,' he said.
The meeting was presided over by committee convener T.L. Santosh.

CU syndicate member seeks revision of UG Malayalam MDC citing overemphasis on Left ideologies

Kozhikode: A UDF-affiliated syndicate member of Calicut University lodged a complaint with vice-chancellor alleging that syllabus of the third-semester Malayalam Multi-Disciplinary Course (MDC) for undergraduate degree programme gives undue importance to Communist and Marxist ideologies, without giving any importance to language and literature studies. Syndicate member P Rasheed Ahmed said the chapters such as 'Janmitham' and 'Karshaka Samaramgal and Bhooparishkaranam' in the syllabus were framed exclusively around the history of Left movements. He alleged that the syllabus attempts to prove that Kerala's social development was made possible solely through Leftist movements, while completely disregarding the contributions of other govts. Only works by CPM leaders and writers from Leftist thought streams were included for study, he added. Ahmed noted that MDC, which replaced the second language courses, should have been designed to impart fundamental knowledge of the language and literary sensibility. Instead, nearly 95% of the current syllabus is comprised of subjects such as political science, history and law. The course, he said, has shifted from 'teaching Malayalam' to merely 'teaching in Malayalam'. He demanded that the Malayalam MDC syllabus should be urgently reviewed by an expert committee, with ideologically biased content removed and restructured to prioritise language and literature. CPI not qualified to talk on AIADMK-BJP alliance: EPS

Coming down strongly on Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary R. Mutharasan's comments on the AIADMK-BJP alliance, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Tuesday said that the CPI leader had no locus standi to talk about the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, as the DMK too had been in alliance with the saffron party in the 1999 general election and 2001 State Assembly poll. Mr. Palaniswami was reacting to Mr. Mutharasan's charge in Salem last week that the AIADMK leader had aligned with the BJP without consulting others in his party, prompting members to leave the party in recent weeks. Mr. Mutharasan was referring to former AIADMK leaders A. Anwhar Raajhaa and V. Maitreyan joining the DMK recently. 'Mr. Mutharasan (CPI) has no locus standi to talk about our alliance (AIADMK-BJP). What do the ruling DMK and Communist parties have in common in terms of ideology and principles to forge an alliance for polls?' he asked. Mr. Palaniswami said the Communist parties changed colour according to the political situation. But, the AIADMK's decisions were based on principles. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the AIADMK won 10 seats out of 11 seats in the Salem region despite fighting the election without an alliance,' he claimed Mr. Palaniswami was referring to the CPI State secretary's assertion that the AIADMK would be routed in Salem region, including Mr. Palaniswami's home turf of Edappadi constituency in the 2026 poll. Highlighting the steady increase in prices of essential commodities, the AIADMK leader blamed DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for not taking effective steps to contain inflation. On the other hand, under his leadership, the AIADMK regime kept prices under control even during the pandemic (COVID-19) by creating a Price Stabilisation Fund. Essential commodities were brought from other States and sold at lower prices to meet the demand in Tamil Nadu. This helped contain the rising prices. 'The DMK is only good at bringing down the curtains on good initiatives like Amma clinics launched by the AIADMK. They (DMK) closed 2,000 such clinics in Tamil Nadu, but once the AIADMK returns to power in 2026, 4,000 AMMA clinics will be opened,' he said.

Telangana CM Asks MPs To ‘Vote By Conscience' For INDIA Bloc's VP Pick Sudershan Reddy

Last Updated: The CM made a heartfelt appeal to all Telugu political leaders and citizens to rise above party lines to support Sudershan Reddy's nomination Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Monday requested Members of Parliament to vote by their inner conscience for the INDIA bloc's Vice Presidential candidate Sudershan Reddy. He made a heartfelt appeal to all Telugu political leaders and citizens to rise above party lines and support a nominee who, he said, stands for integrity, public service, and Telugu pride. Addressing the media at his residence in Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad, the Chief Minister accused the NDA of misusing constitutional institutions and undermining democratic values. In stark contrast, he said, the INDIA alliance is committed to protecting the Constitution, drawing inspiration from the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. 'This election is not just a political event; it is a moral test. On one side stands the NDA, which has ridiculed democratic processes. On the other hand is the INDIA bloc, upholding constitutional values. Justice Sudershan Reddy, our candidate, is a constitutional expert who embodies that commitment," Revanth stated. 'After PV Narasimha Rao, this is the first time a Telugu individual has the opportunity to occupy such a high constitutional position. Every Telugu MP—regardless of party affiliation—has a duty to support him," he said. The Chief Minister made a direct appeal to TDP Chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu, BRS President K Chandrashekar Rao, YSR Congress President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Janasena President Pawan Kalyan, and leaders of the Communist parties, as well as BJP MPs from both Telugu states, urging them to put aside political rivalries and back Justice Reddy. 'This is a matter of Telugu self-respect and democratic responsibility," he asserted. Revanth also recalled the political foresight of NT Rama Rao in 1991, when he supported PV Narasimha Rao in the Nandyal by-election by choosing not to field a candidate against him — a gesture that reflected Telugu unity and statesmanship. Revanth Reddy said the INDIA alliance's decision to nominate a son of Telangana has brought immense pride to the region. He reiterated the need for unity across party lines to uphold democratic values and ensure the election of a deserving Telugu leader to the office of Vice President of India. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
