
Kering-owned Balenciaga promotes Nathalie Raynaud to deputy CEO during leadership shift
Balenciaga has reshuffled its executive ranks as it navigates a pivotal leadership transition. The Kering -owned fashion house has promoted Nathalie Raynaud, its former chief product officer, to deputy chief executive officer, a spokesperson confirmed. The move comes as the brand still awaits the appointment of its next creative director.
A specialist in leather goods, Raynaud joined Balenciaga in 2021 as director of the Accessories Business Unit. In 2023, she was named chief product officer. She successfully led the accessories division during her tenure and played a key role in launching several signature bag models, including the Cagole, Rodeo, and Bel Air. In her new role, she will report directly to CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli, who took over earlier this year following Cédric Charbit 's move to helm Saint Laurent.
Raynaud replaces Laura du Rusquec, who exited the company in 2023 to become CEO of Danish brand Ganni. 'In her new role, Nathalie Raynaud's mission will be to continue providing a strategic, creative, and product-focused vision aligned with the house's objectives to drive sales growth, build influence, and strengthen its market position,' Balenciaga stated in a press release.
A graduate of the University of Assas and Edhec Business School, Raynaud brings broad expertise in luxury fashion and accessories. She previously held roles in merchandising, development, and retail at several prominent Parisian houses. Her experience includes work in the watch division at Christian Dior and eight years at Louis Vuitton, where she oversaw the women's leather goods category. She later joined Maje and Lanvin, leading the accessories division.
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Balenciaga, as Demna—widely credited for the brand's modern identity—is reportedly preparing to join Gucci. Until a new creative director is announced, Raynaud's leadership will help steer the brand through its next chapter.

Guggenheim's Rosenfield revives Danish brand selling $450,000 watches
Alex's background is in fashion and beauty marketing, and Andy is a philanthropist and the president of the financial services firm Guggenheim Partners LLC. The three timepieces represent the revival of a brand that traces its roots to 1773, when Danish watchmaker Jorgen Jürgensen started creating his own pocket watches—far away from the watchmaking heartlands of Switzerland and France. Later, his son Urban took over the helm. A master of mechanics and crafts, Urban built some of the finest pocket watches of the time. The company was handed down from generation to generation until the early 1900s, when it was sold and, in the ensuing years under several different owners, its popularity declined. The brand enjoyed a second renaissance when Swiss watch collector Peter Baumberger purchased the company in 1979 and brought British watchmaker Derek Pratt onboard to create beautiful pocket watches, some oval in shape (including the Pratt Oval, a rare masterpiece you can read about here) and others with teardrop-shaped lugs. In 1996, Baumberger hired cult Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen to work on new movements for wristwatches. Those round wristwatches featured design aesthetics such as teardrop lugs, stepped bezels and small subsidiary seconds dials, embracing a Danish minimalistic, comfortable and functional design style. Voutilainen says he honed his unique finishing skills, the distinctive techniques that define his work, while at the company. Today, he's one of the most celebrated and award-winning independent watchmakers, known for his mastery of the art of engine turning dials by hand on vintage machines, for his incredibly complex finishes on movement parts and his complicated horological movements. While he was passionate about propelling the brand forward, Baumberger died in 2011, which ushered in a new set of owners and diminished demand. Then, four years ago, in 2021, watch collector Andy Rosenfield purchased the Urban Jürgensen brand (with a small group of investors), with the goal to propel it into a third golden age. Already an owner of several Voutilainen watches, Rosenfield brought Voutilainen onboard, along with his own son Alex, to act as co-chief executive officers. While the Rosenfields own 85% of the business, Voutilainen (and some family and friends) own the remaining 15%. Together the co-CEOs vowed to return Urban Jürgensen to its former glory but with a modern twist. 'Our goal is to take our Danish spirit and to create a brand that feels joyful and welcoming. The watches were designed by Kari to be appealing to both men and women,' says the elder Rosenfield. 'He designed a new case and lug shape for the watches that make them sit very comfortably on a smaller wrist.' The round cases are 39mm and 39.5mm in diameter and boast either shortened lugs or reinterpreted teardrop-designed lugs to fit nicely on the wrist. The new Urban Jürgensen watches are made in Switzerland. They're powered by in-house movements designed by Voutilainen and made in the Urban Jürgensen workshops in Biel. Two of the three watches are based on a preexisting Voutilainen caliber that's been adapted. It features a free-spring balance wheel with direct double-wheel escapement. Each is crafted in limited numbers. The UJ-1 watch, for instance, is built in a limited edition of just 75 pieces. Also referred to as the 250th Anniversary watch, it boasts a 39.5mm case and houses a complex gold movement with tourbillon remontoir escapement, which compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity and brings constant force for precision. The watch was inspired by the Pratt Oval, with details such as hand-guilloche finishes, an asymmetric minute track and a gold subsidiary dial. Retailing for 368,000 Swiss francs ($450,000), it's crafted in either rose gold or in platinum and features a hand-finished dial in silver or gray. Three combinations will be offered in runs of 25 of each. The plan is to create just 75 each of the other two watches as well. The UJ-2 watch (105,000 francs) is an elegant time-only watch. Created in cooperation with another top independent watchmaker, Andreas Strehler, the UJ-3 is a perpetual calendar with an instantaneous jump mechanism at midnight that keeps the moonphase accurate to within one day every 14,000 years. It retails for 168,000 francs. The brand expects to make fewer than 100 watches in its first year, then double that in the next. Unlike Voutilainen's namesake brand, which makes about 60 watches a year, Rosenfield says Urban Jürgensen will aim to steadily grow over the course of years, focusing on developing new complications. Currently, the watches are only available directly to consumers online. 'This collection is a tribute to Urban Jürgensen and his unique and extraordinary legacy. It's rooted in everything that defines who we are: precision, artistry, and a profound respect for the value of time,' says Voutilainen. 'We want to keep the brand rare, and while we want to grow it, we can't grow too fast. We want to keep building the most sophisticated movements and create watches with a soul.'

Undiz, a year on: has Marie Delahaie brought fresh momentum?
In May 2024, Marie Delahaie took over as managing director of French lingerie chain Undiz, succeeding Isolde Andouard. Delahaie's first step was to work on brand image and a new logo to try to give Undiz fresh impetus, and she is now set on revamping the brand's store concept. Delahaie, 44, who previously worked at Balenciaga, Zadig & Voltaire and Lacoste, has talked to about the areas she is focusing on, as she aims to attract new customers to the brand. Undiz was founded in 2007, and from the start it has targeted Gen Z consumers with its low-cost products. 'Our latest store concepts were very striking, with plenty of black and metallic hues. We now want our collections to take centre-stage in-store, and we're adopting a much lighter palette, rounded forms, bowl-shaped ceiling lights, and cosy fitting rooms with macaroon-shaped seats,' said Delahaie. Undiz commissioned the stores' interior design to Spanish agency Masquespacio. Undiz isn't planning to expand its retail footprint, but the new interiors concept will be rolled out during the summer in the stores at Paris Saint-Lazare, and in those in the town centre of Tours and Rennes. Undiz's 157 stores in France (plus the 41 addresses outside the country, chiefly elsewhere in Europe, in the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin) are all expected to adopt the new look by 2028, with 35 renovations per year initially planned. This will include some soft-touch upgrades (new flooring, and walls redecorated in white), given that '65% of our store fleet still has the original all-black interiors.' Seven full renovations and 13 'soft' refurbishments are scheduled in the second half of 2025. The goal is to broadcast the message that Undiz 'is no longer focused solely on 18 to 25-year-olds. It's a fresh, creative brand, still offering very good value for money, and which is opening up to a new clientèle,' said Delahaie. 'The good news is that, according to the Kantar Institute, 50% of the French consumers they track do not know us. There is therefore potential for growth through our new positioning.' In recent months, footfall in stores has been satisfactory. 'More people are visiting our stores. We attribute this to our revamped brand image, which has been advertised with plenty of poster displays and city-centre marketing. Undiz is a high street brand, generating 90% of sales through its stores. Having a physical connection with consumers is paramount,' said Delahaie. Undiz's customer base has recently topped the 5 million mark, equivalent to a 35% increase. Assortment-wise, prices remain low, but the brand's style has slightly shifted away from its hyper-sexy, assertive character, transitioning towards 'a softer, fine-lace feel. We removed from our collections products with a bondage vibe, promoting instead another kind of sexy, based on our corsetry expertise. It's quite a balancing act, keeping prices steady without cutting back on quality,' said Delahaie. Is there a risk of encroaching on the territory of the group's flagship brand, Etam? Delahaie said that 'even if there is some overlap on certain trends, the group ensures that each brand has its own vocabulary. And price continues to be our differentiating factor.' In terms of CSR, Undiz says that 70% of its products bear the 'We Care' label, which designates the brand's more sustainable items (made with organic or recycled materials, or using low-impact manufacturing methods, for example sublimation). Undiz's license portfolio is also changing, featuring fewer Disney characters and introducing new partnerships, for example the retro-garage capsule collection dropped this season in collaboration with Ford. In addition, Undiz is increasingly targeting a male clientèle, and its men's range now accounts for 10% of the business. 'We made a men's underwear photoshoot for the first time this year, and it has worked very well in terms of advertising,' said Delahaie. Talking assortment, residual inventory remains a challenge in lingerie. 'AI is helping us predict demand and plan purchase orders, especially for year-round products, as well as how to distribute products among our stores,' she said, adding that besides brand image, the range and the retail concept, Undiz's way of working has also changed. Staff are less compartmentalised and the teams are working more closely together, and I'm trying to introduce a more entrepreneurial mindset. I'm noticing that our staff's sense of belonging is growing.' Undiz is close-mouthed about its annual revenue, which is said to be in the region of €200 million. Delahaie said the result of fiscal 2024 was 'appropriate,' and that Undiz is ahead of forecasts in 2025. 'In the first part of the year, we are also doing better than lingerie market specialists and mass-market retailers,' concluded Delahaie, who has set herself the challenge of a new international expansion drive next year.
