Mbappe Makes His Club World Cup Debut in Real Madrid's Win over Juventus

Asharq Al-Awsat12 hours ago
Kylian Mbappe jogged, clapped his hands together and waved to a crowd of excited fans before checking into the Club World Cup for the first time.
From there, the Real Madrid star didn't need to do much for his club to advance past Juventus into the tournament's quarterfinals.
Gonzalo García, who had started Madrid's four matches while Mbappe dealt with an illness, scored what turned out to be the winning goal on a header Tuesday afternoon before subbing out of the match.
Mbappe replaced him in the 68th minute of the 1-0 win in the round of 16, interacting with the crowd that chanted his name before taking off his warmup suit. He was active on the pitch and received a few passes from Vinicius Junior despite not scoring.
Mbappe had a gastrointestinal illness before Real Madrid's opening Club World Cup match and was treated at a hospital. He sat out all three group matches as Madrid won two and drew the other.
In his place, the 21-year-old García scored three goals, with a goal contribution in every match of the tournament.
After coach Xabi Alonso said Monday it was possible Mbappe could make his highly anticipated Club World Cup debut, the French star arrived with the team several hours before the game was set to begin at Hard Rock Stadium.
He walked onto the field ahead of Tuesday's match to an ovation from the fans in the soggy venue that had seen downpours throughout the afternoon.
Mbappe's return brings star power to a tournament that took a hit when Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were eliminated in the round of 16 by Mbappe's and Messi's former club, Paris Saint-Germain.

Cardinals' Contreras Sustains Left Hand Contusion When Hit by Pitch From Pirates Ace Skenes

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras sustained a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch by Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes while leading off the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 1–0 loss to the Pirates. Contreras stayed in the game to run the bases and was thrown out at home plate by Pirates left fielder Tommy Pham to end the inning while trying to score from second base on Pedro Pages' single. Contreras had X-rays on the hand, and they came back negative. He and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said it is doubtful that the three-time All-Star will play in the teams' series finale on Wednesday. Contreras was replaced in the bottom of the fourth by Alec Burleson, who shifted from left field. Garrett Hampson took over in left. Contreras is hitting .248 in 82 games with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. The 33-year-old Contreras sustained a season-ending fractured left middle finger last Aug. 24 when he was hit by a pitch. 'When I get hit in the arm or hand, I get a little worried,' Contreras said. 'I think I'm going to be OK, just a day or two (off).' The Cardinals are off Thursday before opening a three-game series Friday in Chicago against the Cubs.

Guirassy Scores Twice and Dortmund Advances at Club World Cup With 2-1 Win Over Feisty Monterrey

Serhou Guirassy scored a pair of first-half goals, both assisted by Karim Adeyemi, and Borussia Dortmund held off Monterrey 2–1 Tuesday night in the final round of 16 game at the Club World Cup. Guirassy drove a shot just inside the left post in the 14th minute, then sent another past keeper Esteban Andrada in the 24th when left unmarked from 15 yards at the top of the penalty area. Both times it was Adeyemi delivering the pass that set up Guirassy, a native of France who plays for Guinea's national team. The 29-year-old striker has three goals in four tournament games and 37 across all competitions in his first season with Dortmund. Dortmund will face Real Madrid on Saturday at East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Spanish power advanced with a 1–0 victory over Italy's Juventus in an afternoon match. Jobe Bellingham received a yellow card in the 28th minute and will miss the match against Real – and his brother, former Dortmund star Jude Bellingham – because of yellow card accumulation. Rayados, cheered by a large contingent of flag-waving supporters in Atlanta, bounced back from the sluggish start to make a game of it. Less than three minutes into second half, a cross to the far post deflected off the head of a Dortmund defender before Érick Aguirre headed it back across the net to Germán Berterame, who headed it in to cut the deficit to a single goal. Using their speed to attack Dortmund vertically, Monterrey dominated the second half and had several chances to level the score. But the German team held on despite the Mexican squad holding a 59 percent edge in possession and a 7–3 advantage in shots on goal. The late game drew a crowd of 31,442 at cavernous Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the upper deck wasn't needed. But the sweltering US heat wasn't an issue with the roof closed in Atlanta. American Gio Reyna did not play for the third time in four games at the Club World Cup, another sign that his tenure with Dortmund could be winding down. Key moment: Dortmund started strongly thanks to a nifty flick from Adeyemi at the top of the area that set up Guirassy's opening goal. Takeaways: Dortmund's victory means five of the eight clubs in the quarterfinals are from Europe. Monterrey was the last club left from North America. They said it: 'I think I could have scored three goals, at least. But I'm happy I helped the team. The most important thing was to win the game.' – Guirassy. 'We played a fantastic game from the first minute to the last one. … All the players who have been involved in the Premier League and the Spanish competition know the quality of the Mexican teams. We don't need to sell it.' – Monterrey captain Sergio Ramos through an interpreter.

Guardians Place Gabriel Arias on IL With Ankle Sprain, Recall Brayan Rocchio From Triple-A

The Cleveland Guardians placed shortstop Gabriel Arias on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain before Tuesday night's game at the Chicago Cubs and recalled infielder Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A Columbus. Rocchio was in Cleveland's lineup at shortstop and batting ninth for the series opener at Wrigley Field. Arias was taken off the field on a cart after getting hurt in the third inning of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The team said X-rays were negative and Arias underwent an MRI on Monday. 'It looks like we got pretty lucky,' manager Stephen Vogt said. 'It looks like a moderate ankle sprain. So we'll have more information on him when we get back (to Cleveland on Friday) but it sounds like he avoided some major injury, which is great.' Arias is batting .231 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 77 games in his first full season as a starter. Arias went deep into the hole to field a grounder by Masyn Winn with one out but caught his left spike on the grass and awkwardly rolled his ankle. The ball wound up in left field for a single. Arias immediately grabbed his leg and remained down for several minutes. Rocchio opened the season with the Guardians but was optioned to Triple-A on May 12 after batting only .165 with eight RBIs in 35 games. In 41 games with Columbus, he hit .252 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
