'Aa gaye meri maut ka tamasha dekhne. Ab mujhe latka denge, zubaan aise bahar ayegi, ankhen bahar ayegi, thodi der latakta rahunga. Fir ye mera bhai mujhe niche utarega, fir aap charcha karte ghar chale jaoge, khana khaoge so jaoge.' Well, this dialogue is definitely memorable.

Streaming platforms cut back—but top OTT stars still command big money

For instance, Akshay Kumar's much-anticipated Amazon Prime Video debut, The End, announced in 2019, has yet to see the light of as India's video streaming platforms slash content budgets and greenlight fewer shows, a select group of homegrown OTT stars—who shot to fame during the platform boom—are holding steady on pay, according to industry executives. Actors like Jaideep Ahlawat and Pankaj Tripathi—who broke out on the digital medium and became synonymous with OTT hits—continue to command hefty fees, sometimes up to ₹20 crore per season for popular shows like Paatal Lok and Criminal Justice. In contrast, big-budget web originals featuring top Bollywood stars—heavily promoted during the OTT surge a few years ago—appear to be on the back burner, as platforms now view their fees as cost-prohibitive. One telling example is The End, Akshay Kumar's high-profile Amazon Prime Video debut announced in 2019, which remains unreleased six years later. Read this | The rise of small-town stories on OTT: Grassroots-themed shows are proving to be cost-effective, culturally rich Platforms are tightening purse strings across the board, but data-driven insights into viewer engagement and retention seem to be insulating these digital-first actors—for now. 'At a larger level, there is definitely a reduction in the number of projects that are being greenlit and the overall volume is shrinking," noted Namit Sharma, chief executive officer at Arre Studios, a content-creation company. "However, platforms aren't really asking us to slash actor costs. Essentially, you need one or in some cases, two or three, popular faces to draw audiences into the show and then there are other names to balance it out," Sharma said. He added that while overall slates may have fewer shows, the aim is to retain 'poster value'—faces that help drive buzz and marketing. Read this | Why star-powered movies have OTT handprints all over them This strategy reflects a broader shift: With services backing fewer, bigger bets, marquee OTT actors have become the face of select high-impact shows, while Bollywood A-listers are increasingly seen as cost-prohibitive. Industry executives say global streaming platforms remain wary of footing massive bills for stars who no longer guarantee box office—or viewership—returns. 'Services are closely mapping which titles are working, whom they star and then taking decisions. It is anyway easier to justify a show with big names to top bosses sitting abroad," said a senior executive at a content studio working on a slate of shows, declining to be named. The dichotomy, the person added, is that even top actors are no longer guaranteeing box office performance, and there's a growing disenchantment with celebrity culture in India—across both cinema and digital content. However, platforms have been slow to adapt to that shift. To be sure, while platforms once chased big-ticket originals with top Bollywood names, many of those high-profile deals have stalled or quietly faded. In their place, services are leaning more heavily on a smaller crop of OTT-native stars—who offer strong audience pull at relatively lower cost. Also read | How Zakir Khan, Bhuvan Bam and Kusha Kapila hit the big time 'By and large, actor costs have remained the same. Some of these streaming stars have also moved to theatrical films so they are in a more commanding position. Plus, if they agree to cuts for one show, word spreads," streaming expert Girish Dwibhashyam said. He added that while platforms are balancing this out with fewer big-ticket shows in general, it would be some time before they let go of the dependence on stars.

With these promising figures and the franchise's proven mass appeal, Housefull 5 is all set to storm the box office and deliver one of the strongest openings of the year. The upbeat momentum in ticket sales reflects the audience's excitement for the return of the comedy franchise, marking a significant boost for Akshay's box office streak. The previous instalment, Housefull 4, which hit cinemas during the festive Diwali weekend in 2019, had clocked in an impressive Rs 8 crore in bookings. Riding on the holiday cheer and franchise buzz, it went on to collect over Rs 19 crore net on its opening day, setting a high benchmark for Housefull 5 to follow. Leading the charge was Housefull 4, which alone contributed a massive Rs 296 crore to the global tally. With such a strong legacy behind it, expectations are sky-high for Housefull 5 to deliver yet another blockbuster hit. On the work front, Akshay Kumar has a packed slate ahead. He will be reprising his iconic role in the much-awaited Hera Pheri 3. Additionally, he's set to feature in a key role in Vishnu Manchu's ambitious project Kannappa, sharing screen space with stars like Prabhas, Mohanlal, and Kajal Aggarwal—a lineup that's already generating massive buzz.

Housefull 5 Box Office Collection Prediction: Will the latest Housefull movie end Akshay Kumar's streak of duds? Film projected to earn Rs 200 crore

Housefull 5 Box Office Collection Prediction: Akshay Kumar may have had a hectic 2024, but it certainly wasn't commercially fruitful. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Khel Khel Mein, Sarfira, Singham Again, the actor had a string of flops. 2025 also didn't start on a positive note for Akshay either, with Sky Force failing to make an impact. However, after tasting success with Kesari 2, Akshay is returning to the big screen with Housefull 5, the latest installment in the hit Housefull franchise. But will this film revive the actor's lost glory at the box office? Will Housefull 5 bring back his good fortune? Or have too many films from Akshay left the actor overexposed to his audience? We at SCREEN spoke to a few trade experts who told us Housefull 5 can be 'that film' which can turn around Akshay's fortune once again, but… 'Does Akshay Kumar's brand value still hold as strongly as it once did?' Sharing his thoughts on the same, film exhibitor Akkshay Rathie said, 'Akshay's brand value, of course, can pull the audience to theatres. It hasn't been the greatest run in recent times, but it's just a question of one film that will turn the fortune around. It has happened to so many actors. Before Wanted was released, Salman Khan had a few films that didn't do well, but after Wanted, there was no looking back. Even Shahid Kapoor had 10 films that didn't work till Sooraj Barjatiya's Vivah happened; after that, he had a thriving career. For Akshay, it's a question of one film, and hopefully Housefull 5 is that film which might make his fortune turn.' Also Read: Akshay Kumar intervenes at Housefull 5 event as women and children caught in crowd frenzy: 'Aap log ko yahan se jaana padega' Trade expert Joginder Tuteja added, 'Akshay's brand value when it comes to this franchise is impeccable. Sajid Nadiadwala has delivered four successes in a row with Housefull, so the fifth part is a very hot property. The songs have done well, trailer has worked well, of course there is a Eid factor, but as seen in the past, holiday or no holiday, if the film is something the audience is waiting for, then it will definitely take a good opening, and that will be the case here as well.' While it is a fact that Akshay Kumar hasn't had a great run at the box office lately, experts offer a different perspective. When asked if it is fair for makers to tag films as hits when they don't even manage to recover the production budgets, Akkshay Rathie said, 'It's not like Kesari 2 and Sky Force haven't worked. They have done a certain number and earned a lot of respect and love from the audience. Housefull 5 comes from a known commercial property. The franchise has always delivered numbers and earned lots of love and loyalty over its last four editions. And, a recovery of a film happens not just from the box office, but also from the sales of OTT, satellite, etc, which are very often ensured by the stardom and popularity of the lead actor. That is something Akshay Kumar continues to do even today.' 'We should not look at just the box office, but total recoveries of the film through all the avenues of monetization. As long as the people who have invested the money have a positive return, then it's all good,' Akkshay added. Joginder said, 'Who says these films didn't work? Of course, Sky Force did take one of the better openings of the year, and Kesari 2 has done well. For a niche film like that, it's a bona fide success. I am very surprised if one has a perception that these films haven't worked.' While Akshay still seems to have the charm to bring audiences to theaters, the Housefull franchise in itself is also quite powerful. Sharing what is expected from the Housefull 5, Akkshay Rathie said, 'In Housefull 5, it's not just Akshay Kumar's brand equity but also the franchise. Given the trailer, the cast, and the setup, I am very confident that the film will open to great numbers. If the reports are great, and the film is entertaining like the other parts, I am sure it will go on to do great numbers. Imagine a cast that is such an eclectic mix of people, it's one of the most exciting lineups I have seen in a while. I would be fairly disappointed if Housefull 5 doesn't do a minimum of Rs 200 crore at the box office. It has the potential to entertain the audience.' A post shared by SCREEN (@ieentertainment) Don't Miss: Akshay Kumar, Sajid Nadiadwala answer what the actor charged for Housefull 5: 'Acche paaise liye hain par tujhe kyu bataaon?' Joginder Tuteja added, 'People have been waiting for Akshay to come up with a hardcore commercial film, and this will be that. My indication is that after Chhaava, this will be the biggest success of the year so far.' Housefull 5 has been directed by Tarun Mansukhani and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Johnny Lever, Fardeen Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Dino Morea, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, Ranjeet, Chunky Pandey, Nikitin Dheer, Nargis Fakhri, Jacqueline Fernandez, Soundarya Sharma, Sonam Bajwa, Chitrangda Singh, and more. It is slated to be released on June 6 in theaters.
