JKR awaits Fire Dept clearance for dorm fire technical checks
KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Works Department (JKR) is still awaiting official clearance from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department before proceeding with any technical assessments at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tinggi Setapak dormitory block, which was damaged by a fire last Monday.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that, according to the standard operating procedures (SOPs), the Fire and Rescue Department must first complete the initial investigation to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the area's safety before any further action can be taken.
'Only after that will any technical agencies, including JKR, be permitted to enter and conduct further assessments of the building's structure and safety aspects.
'I assure you that as soon as the Fire and Rescue Department gives the green light, the JKR's technical team will promptly visit the site to carry out a thorough inspection,' he said in a Facebook post today.
Nanta added that the assessment is crucial to determine the extent of the damage and to propose the necessary repair or reconstruction measures.
He said that his ministry will continue to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Education and all relevant agencies to ensure that the welfare and safety of both students and school staff remain a top priority.
'I am fully aware of, and deeply sympathise with this incident. Incidents like this are truly concerning, particularly when they involve the safety of students, teachers, and school staff. I am grateful that no casualties were reported,' he said, adding that the incident was one of the key topics discussed at his ministry's Post-Cabinet meeting, today.
On Monday, the media reported that a dormitory block at SMK Tinggi Setapak, which accommodates 91 male students, was engulfed in fire, destroying 80 per cent of the building.
Fortunately, all students were reported safe, as they were in the school's surau awaiting the Isyak prayer at the time of the incident.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — A 15-year-old boy with a learning disability who went missing while looking for cattle in a forested area near Kampung Permatang Pasir, Alai, was found safe early this morning after more than 32 hours. According to the New Straits Times, Muhamad Aidil Asyraf Fadli was found lying in the undergrowth behind a house about 600 metres from the Fire and Rescue Department's control post at 2.08am. Villagers also assisted in the search, along with three sniffer dogs — two from the Fire and Rescue Department and one from the police. 'The operation was divided into four sectors and expanded to include riverbanks, with aerial monitoring conducted using a Fire and Rescue Department drone,' said Hafidzatullah. He added that SAR teams also drained two artificial ponds during the search. Meanwhile, Melaka Tengah deputy police chief Superintendent Halim Abas confirmed that Muhamad Aidil is currently receiving treatment at the Emergency Department of Melaka Hospital and is in stable condition.

16 UK-Bred Dogs To Join JBPM K9 Unit By November
KOTA BHARU, June 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 16 dogs from the United Kingdom (UK) to be received by the Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) K9 Unit are expected to begin duties in November. JBPM director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said each dog costs around RM150,000, adding that five will be deployed to Sabah, two to Sarawak and the remainder to the department's K9 unit base at Jalan Klang Lama in Kuala Lumpur. 'We expect all the dogs to arrive in Malaysia by October, before commencing duties in November after undergoing several processes and training. 'For the selection process, three officers from JBPM, the Veterinary Department, and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will be sent to the UK. Upon arrival in Malaysia, the dogs will undergo a familiarisation process with their new handlers,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the 2025 Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption forum here today, also attended by Kelantan JBPM director Farhan Sufyan Borhan.
