Josef Newgarden is trying to become the first driver to win three consecutive Indianapolis 500s. Helio Castroneves (2001-02), Al Unser (1970-71), Bill Vukovich (1953-54), Mauri Rose (1947-48) and Wilbur Shaw (1939-40) also won consecutive 500s.
Newgarden is scheduled to start 32nd for the May 25 race after IndyCar ruled his crew illegally modified an attenuator for fast 12 qualifying.
Newgarden has 31 race wins, the most among active American drivers, and he won IndyCar points championships in 2017 and '19.

Long Beach: 27th after two unscheduled pit stops for safety harness issues
Barber: 10th

Newgarden's 2024 Indy 500 victory yielded a record $4.3 million.
