Lowell man gets 4 years for shooting at semi on rural highway
He then fired more shots at the road 12 hours later in White County.
Kevin Perfetti, 55, pleaded guilty in March in Lake Superior Court to intimidation. He was originally charged in an attempted murder case.
Defense lawyer Lonnie Randolph II said his client otherwise didn't have any criminal history, but spiraled after his mother's 2017 death. Perfetti already spent two years in jail and would respond to rehabilitation, he said.
His client struggled with depression and was using drugs the week the shootings happened, he said.
Court records show Perfetti pleaded guilty to intimidation in White County and was sentenced to about two years in February 2024.
Lake County Deputy Prosecutor Adam Martin acknowledged Perfetti's mental health challenges, but said the case had 'serious charges' and someone could have been really hurt. He asked for four years in prison.
Randolph disputed Martin's request, saying the case was overcharged from the start. Martin told Vasquez prosecutors felt the attempted murder case was appropriate.
Perfetti said in court what he did was 'reckless' and apologized.
Vasquez told him he could have killed someone.
Court records show a truck driver told police he was driving with a female passenger west on Indiana 2 around 1 a.m. April 26, 2023 when a black SUV with a temporary license plate drove erratically, sped in front of them, then kept braking.
The driver sped ahead.
Up the road, the semi driver saw the man out of the car with a firearm and saw 'flashes' and heard multiple shots.
The SUV driver got back into the vehicle and made a U-turn driving off east.
Bullets struck the semi's grille, right front fender, the right tire. The back doors had at least 10 bullet holes.
Another semi driver said she was driving south on I-65 in White County the same day when a black SUV did the same thing.
The other driver put a gun out the window and fired shots, according to the affidavit.
An Indiana State Trooper found Perfetti in a Boone County rest stop. His 2020 black Chevy Tahoe had temporary plates. Inside his vehicle, police found a semi-automatic pistol, a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, a gun magazine clip, ammunition and casings.
Perfetti said in a police interview he passed a semi, which flashed their lights at him. He pulled in front of it and 'brake checked' it. He admitted he fired shots in a 'road rage' incident in White County.

Special Attorney Ed Martin checks out Tish James' ‘mortgage fraud' home
Department of Justice Special Attorney Ed Martin was spotted in Brooklyn Friday inspecting Tish James' multi-family residential property that is at the center of a federal mortgage fraud investigation. Martin, conspicuous in a beige trench coat, visited the Clinton Hill brownstone a week after being appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi to run parallel mortgage fraud probes into the New York attorney general and her fellow Trump-deranged Democrat, California Sen. Adam Schiff. Grand juries in Virginia and Maryland are currently weighing criminal indictments for James and Schiff respectively over allegations they falsified property records to secure favorable loan terms. 3 Department of Justice Special Attorney Ed Martin was seen at the Clinton Hill section in Brooklyn, NY, inspecting the home of New York Attorney General Letitia James. Gregory P. Mango James' Brooklyn property at 296 Lafayette Avenue is classified as a five-unit dwelling, but James is alleged to have misrepresented the building on mortgage applications, building permits, and filings for government assistance as having only four units. The alleged misclassification allowed her to qualify for loans with better interest rates and lower down payments through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which are only available for properties with four or fewer residential units. Every week, Post columnist Miranda Devine sits down for exclusive and candid conversations with the most influential disruptors in Washington. Subscribe here! At the time Martin was inspecting the property on Friday afternoon, there was one doorbell visible at the main entrance and an additional four door bells at a side entrance, with weathered labels signifying '1 Floor,' '2 Floor,' '3A,' and '3B.' A neighbor confronted Martin and an unidentified colleague as they were standing out the front of the property and asked them what they were doing. You're here because of who lives here. It's my neighborhood. It's my block. I have a right to know what you guys are doing.' Martin replied: 'I'm just happy to be on a block looking at houses . . . I'm just looking at houses, interesting houses. It's an important house.' 3 James' property located at 296 Lafayette Avenue is classified as a five-unit complex, but James allegedly misclassified the unit on mortgage applications, claiming the building only had four units. New York Post 'It's not,' retorted the neighbor. 'It's just like every other tract house on this block that was built by developers.' 'They're beautiful, beautiful neighborhood,' Martin told her, before walking away. The investigation into James' real estate holdings began in April when Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department. Pulte alleged James may have 'falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms' by claiming a Norfolk, Virginia, home she bought in 2023 would be her 'principal residence' while acting as New York AG, and that the property she owns in Brooklyn was her second residence. 3 The misfilings have led James to be granted loans with better interest rates and lower down payments. New York Post The case also includes allegations that James and her father signed mortgage papers listing themselves as 'husband and wife' to meet lending rules. Both James and Schiff deny any wrongdoing. 'Bill Pulte and his FHFA team got this started with his criminal referral,' Martin said last week. 'And as Tish James and Adam Schiff always say: 'Nobody is above the law.' Woman pleads guilty to assault for spitting on top DC prosecutor during interview
WASHINGTON -- A woman who spit on the top federal prosecutor for the nation's capital during a videotaped interview pleaded guilty on Thursday to assault charges. Emily Gabriella Sommer, 32, of Washington, D.C., is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 10 for assaulting then-acting U.S. Attorney Ed Martin Jr. and two law-enforcement officers who arrested her several days after she spit on Martin. Sommer pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting public officials, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office. A trial for Sommer had been scheduled to start next Monday. Instead, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb accepted Sommer's guilty plea and will sentence her. On May 8, a Newsmax reporter was interviewing Martin on a sidewalk outside his office when Sommer approached him. 'Are you Ed Martin? You are Ed Martin,' Sommer said before lunging at him and spitting on his left shoulder, according to prosecutors. As she walked away, Sommer swore at Martin and called him 'a disgusting man.' "My name is Emily Gabriella Sommer, and you are served,' she said. Sommer later took credit for the spitting incident in a message replying to a social media post by Martin. The encounter occurred on the same day that President Donald Trump pulled Martin's nomination to remain U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Martin faced bipartisan opposition in the Senate after a turbulent stint in the nation's largest U.S. Attorney's office. A key Republican senator said he could not support Martin for the job due to his support for rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Martin roiled the office with a series of unorthodox moves, such as firing and demoting subordinates who worked on politically sensitive cases. Trump replaced Martin with former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, who was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 2. When U.S. Marshals Service deputies went to arrest Sommer at her apartment on May 22, she spit in a deputy's face and kicked him, prosecutors said. 'How is that spit? Taste good? I was just getting over a cold sore. I hope I gave you herpes,' Sommer told the deputy, according to prosecutors. Sommer also kicked a second deputy during her arrest and told another deputy, 'I would put a bullet in you if I had it. I would put a bullet in every one of you right now,' prosecutors said. During her initial court appearance in May, Sommer repeatedly disrupted the hearing with outbursts. Deputies picked her up and carried her out of the courtroom after one of her interruptions prompted a magistrate to suspend the hearing. Sommer later apologized to the magistrate for her courtroom conduct.
