Clemson receives a crystal ball prediction to land 4-star offensive lineman Carter Scurggs

USA Today5 days ago

Clemson football's June recruiting momentum may be picking up steam again—this time on the offensive line.
On Tuesday, 247Sports analyst Brian Dohn submitted a Crystal Ball projection in favor of the Tigers for four-star offensive tackle Carter Scruggs. The 6-foot-6 standout from Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, Virginia, is one of the more coveted linemen in the 2026 class, and the prediction is a notable sign of Clemson's positioning heading into a crucial stretch of visits.
A few weeks ago, Rivals' Sam Spiegelman also logged a FutureCast for Scruggs to land at Clemson. The back-to-back predictions from two major recruiting services reflect growing belief that the Tigers may be in the driver's seat as Scruggs prepares for his official visit to Clemson on May 30.
Scruggs has additional visits scheduled with Michigan (June 6), Penn State (June 13), and Georgia (June 20), but Clemson has clearly made a strong early impression. Under offensive line coach Matt Luke, the Tigers have taken a more targeted approach in recruiting, and Scruggs fits that mold with his size, athleticism, and upside.
Clemson's push to re-establish its depth in the trenches has become a clear priority under Luke, and Scruggs would be a major win in that effort. With a big weekend ahead, the Tigers are now widely viewed as the team to watch in his recruitment.

'It will be weird': Cleary eyes first clash with Luai

There was a time when playing against Nathan Cleary brought Jarome Luai to tears, such was the beating Cleary's team gave him. Fast forward 15-odd years, and Cleary predicts it'll be all love and respect - and possibly a little sledging - when the four-time premiership winning teammates square off at NRL level for the first time. Wests Tigers recruit Luai hosts Cleary's Penrith at CommBank Stadium on Sunday, some eight months after leaving the Panthers for a regular job as an NRL game manager. Luai won a remarkable 78 of 89 matches playing as Cleary's co-pilot in the halves at the Panthers, the pair presiding over a dynasty the likes of which had never been seen in salary cap-era rugby league. But the shared history goes way back to their early adolescence, when Cleary moved with his family from Auckland and began turning out for local club Penrith Brothers - rivals of Luai's St Marys Saints. As professionals, the duo played against one another in the 2022 World Cup final as Cleary's Australia beat Luai and Samoa. But Cleary's mind goes to those park footy days - half a lifetime ago - when he's asked what it will be like to face Luai on Sunday. "We had a few duels back then but obviously it's been a long time," the Panthers halfback said. "I'm looking forward to it. "I do remember probably the biggest upset in junior footy history. We beat them one day and they were stacked. They were so good. "They used to beat us just about 50-nil every time they versed us and one day we got them. "He (Luai) might have cried. I'm not sure that'll happen again." Cleary admits "it will be weird" to think of Luai as a rival again this week, with the pair having begun their journey through the Panthers' junior system not long after those days with Brothers and St Marys. This year, Cleary has taken a keen interest in the Tigers, who appear to finally be turning the corner under Luai's guidance following three consecutive wooden spoons. "It's been good to see them playing some good footy, particularly when they've got momentum, they're one of the best teams in the comp, I reckon," he said. "Just his energy alone has lifted a lot of players around him. That's probably his greatest asset." It's one of the many qualities Cleary admires in Tigers halfback Luai. "There's just always that mutual respect there. We don't talk all the time but whenever we do or whenever we see each other, it's always love," he said. "You'll never be able to take away what we've been able to achieve together. It's always respect and love whenever we see each other." But if Luai tries to get under Cleary's skin the way the Panthers co-captain did to him all those years ago, Cleary says he may have to consider biting back at his good mate. "I don't really start the chirp but if he starts it then we'll see," Cleary said with a smile.

What Jared Curtis' commitment means to Georgia's 2026 class

When Jared Curtis originally committed to Georgia last March, Kirby Smart likely thought he had the cornerstone of his 2026 class and quarterback of the future. Instead, Curtis threw a wrench in those plans with his decommitment in October. Despite that decision, Smart and the Bulldogs never let up and remained a constant presence in Curtis' recruitment. Advertisement That consistency paid off Monday afternoon as the five-star quarterback out of Nashville Christian announced that he had recommitted to the Bulldogs in a decision between Georgia and Oregon. A few schools made the list for Curtis following his October decommitment. That list was narrowed down to two in late March after he announced his top two of Georgia and Oregon, as well as his commitment date. Since then, both schools have gone to work putting together their final pitches for Curtis. He recently hosted both coaching staff members ahead of his decision. Ultimately, it was Smart and the Bulldogs that regained his favor, and what a decision it was for them. Advertisement Best Georgia high schools for athletes? According to one study, these are the top 25 According to 247Sports, Curtis ranks as the No. 13 player in the country and the No. 4 quarterback in the 2026 recruiting cycle. The 247Sports Composite ranking is much higher on Curtis, ranking him as the No. 2 player in the cycle and No. 1 quarterback. He adds a massive boost to a Georgia class that is well off where the Bulldogs typically sit in the rankings since Smart returned home to Athens. Usually a top-three to five team in the rankings, Georgia's 2026 class ranked No. 26. None of their seven pledges at the time ranked as top-100 prospects. Nation's No. 1 LB Reacts To Clemson Official Visit As Georgia Leads Recruiting Battle

Nation's No. 1 LB Reacts To Clemson Official Visit As Georgia Leads Recruiting Battle originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Elite linebacker Tyler Atkinson remains uncommitted despite being linked to Georgia. Advertisement Atkinson (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) has been a longtime target for head coach Kirby Smart's Bulldogs as an in-state product of high school powerhouse Grayson in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The five-star linebacker has been on campus multiple times dating back to his middle school days and has built plenty of familiarity with Smart and co-defensive coordinator/linebacker coach Glenn Schumann. Atkinson's talent is undeniable. He broke the Grayson record for tackles in a season (197) as a sophomore before posting 166 tackles, (32 for loss), 13 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble as a junior in 2024. Atkinson helped lead Grayson to a 6A state championship title last season, beating Carrolton High School and five-star quarterback/ Colorado signee Juju Lewis in the title game, 38-24. Advertisement Head coach Dabo Swinney's Tigers hosted Atkinson on an official visit over the weekend and apparently made quite the impression on the highly-touted recruit. "The Official Visit was OFFICIAL," Atkinson wrote Sunday on X. "It was the definition of "feeling like a priority!" Georgia's recruiting trend at linebacker is well established, with Smart and Schumann signing multiple five-star players at the position over the years. Additionally, UGA has produced three Butkus Award winners since 2017. But Clemson shouldn't be counted out here as another recruiting power with a lot to like defensively. Swinney added former Penn State coordinator Tom Allen, who coached linebacker Abdul Carter in a consensus All-America season, to the Clemson staff this offseason. And linebackers coach Ben Boulware – a former Tigers linebacker, has established himself as a surging recruiting talent. Advertisement On top of his visits to Georgia and Clemson, Atkinson has also been on campus at Ohio State and Miami over the last year. Atkinson is currently projected to sign with Georgia by experts at On3, 247Sports and Rivals. However, a decision date has yet to be announced as he mulls over his options.
