Mohd Na'im: Govt takes swift action to assist stranded umrah pilgrims

KUALA LUMPUR: The government, through the Malaysian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, is taking swift action to ensure the welfare and safety of 42 umrah pilgrims who have been stranded in Jeddah since July 25, including efforts to bring them home, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said that the government takes such cases seriously and will not tolerate those attempting to exploit umrah pilgrims, particularly senior citizens and civil servants, emphasising that strict action, including legal measures, will be taken against them. "I am deeply concerned and sympathetic over the plight of the 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who have reportedly been stranded in Jeddah since July 25 for not having return flight tickets. "Since early this year, I have repeatedly reminded the public to verify the status of companies offering umrah packages through official channels of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, including the dedicated portal and app for checking licenses of travel agents," he said in a Facebook post today. Mohd Na'im advised Muslims in the country to be wary and only opt for legitimate umrah operators to avoid similar incidents from recurring. According to media reports yesterday, 42 umrah pilgrims were allegedly abandoned without travel arrangements in Jeddah by a travel agency. — BERNAMA

SIA flights between Singapore-Cambodia, Singapore-Thailand, operating normally amid border dispute

A spokesperson for the SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees. - ST SINGAPORE: All Singapore Airlines (SIA) flights between Singapore and Cambodia, as well as between Singapore and Thailand, continue to operate normally despite a deadly border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. A spokesperson for the SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees. 'We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust our flights where necessary,' the spokesperson added. A long-simmering border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia escalated to deadly violence on July 24 as their military forces clashed at multiple spots, leaving at least 12 people dead. The flare-up is part of a broader disagreement with origins stretching back more than a century and involves parts of a region known as the Emerald Triangle, where the boundaries of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos meet. The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia will attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia on July 28 at 3pm local time at the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim invited representatives from both countries. Malaysia, which chairs the regional grouping Asean, has informed the Thai government that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet would also be attending the talks, the statement said. According to The Nation, flights between Thailand and Cambodia are continuing as normal, as Cambodia's declared restricted area is limited and does not significantly impact air traffic departing from Thailand. Alternative flight paths are also readily available. - The Straits Times/ANN

Despite the comments, Fan Bingbing's ambassadorship saw a growth in the number of Chinese tourists visiting the historical state. The star was even recognised in the Malaysian Book of Records for 'Largest Digital Hits for Malaysian Tourism on WeChat Platform Using Celebrity Ambassador'. In celebration of her contribution, the state of Melaka is reportedly honouring the star with the highest state honour. According to China Press, Fan Bingbing may be honoured with a Datuk Wira title during the Governor of Melaka's birthday on 24th August 2025 (Sunday). As such, the actress will be returning to the state to receive the honour and fulfil her duties as Tourism Ambassador. Fan Bingbing is currently in Kuala Lumpur to film for an upcoming project. Fan Bingbing's tenure as Melaka's Tourism Ambassador may also be extended, given her contributions to the state so far. Since the state will be hosting the World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 and the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025 from 27th to 29th September 2025 (Saturday to Monday), it's believed the actress will continue her role in light of these events. According to reports, in the year Fan Bingbing was appointed Tourism Ambassador for Melaka, the number of Chinese tourists in the state increased significantly from 204,818 to 664,687.
