Browns' Shedeur Sanders Preseason Viewership Numbers Are Insane

Newsweeka day ago
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
All eyes across the NFL have been on Shedeur Sanders, the polarizing rookie quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. He has been the subject of lots of scrutiny because he is the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and because, according to plenty, he has hyped himself up.
The younger Sanders played for his father, who is the head coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, over the last two seasons. But while he did well there, lots of people have been expecting him to flounder in the big leagues.
He made his NFL preseason debut last Friday versus the Carolina Panthers, and he took a small step toward addressing the criticism and cynicism he has been subject to. He completed 14 of his 23 pass attempts and threw for two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 30-10 win.

Of course, the younger Sanders has a very long way to go before he can prove that he will live up to the hype. But Friday's game was a decently auspicious one.
In 2024, he threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 74% of his pass attempts at Colorado. For a period of time, there even seemed to be a debate on whether he would be the first quarterback taken in this year's NFL draft.
But Cam Ward of the University of Miami won that debate, and closer to the draft, a handful of experts felt that the 23-year-old would fall considerably on the draft board. Some even felt he could drop out of the first round.
In fact, some scouts had some very unflattering things to say about the younger Sanders. One longtime NFL assistant coach said that the QB was "the worst formal interview I've ever been in in my life. He's so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. ... But the biggest thing is, he's not that good."
As it turned out, the NFL draft was a humiliating experience for the younger Sanders. He wasn't taken until the fifth round, and in the interim, he even had to endure a humiliating prank phone call from a college student claiming to be New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.

The Browns have had some of the worst luck of any NFL team when it comes to finding or developing a legitimate star quarterback. Baker Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in 2018, failed to pan out in his four seasons with them, and the Cleveland faithful have had to watch him become his best self with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In the same offseason that Mayfield left, Cleveland traded for Deshaun Watson, the three-time Pro Bowler who led the NFL in passing yards in 2020. But he apparently forgot how to play the QB position after arriving in Northeast Ohio, and after tearing his Achilles last fall, he may never play another snap for the team.

Colts remain among trade destinations for elite pass rusher

Colts remain among trade destinations for elite pass rusher originally appeared on The Sporting News The Trey Hendrickson saga in Cincinnati has reached its latest twist. NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared that, after renewed contract negotiations and Hendrickson returning to Bengals practice, the team is now open to trading last season's league-leader in sacks. Peliserro says that no deal is close, but the Bengals have shifted their stance after initially having no interest in moving on from Hendrickson. The Colts have been linked to Hendrickson ever since the situation went sour with his current team. Indy's defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo, worked with Hendrickson for four seasons, helping him hit the 17.5 sack mark in each of the last two seasons. NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared that Indy is among the teams who have expressed interest in Hendrickson, adding that the Bengals' desired return is not expected to be cheap, asking for at least an 'impact player' as compensation. < This report isn't exactly news when you consider the strength of Anarumo and Hendrickson's partnership on the field. But the Colts have a plethora of pass rushers of their own already who they believe can make an impact, including Kwity Paye, Laiatu Latu and rookie JT Tuimoloau. Still, general manager Chris Ballard tends to be aggressive when pursuing pass rush. Previously in his tenure, he's made trades for franchise cornerstone DeForest Buckner, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and signing Samson Ebukam as a free agent back in 2023. In the return for Ngakoue, a player requested by then-defensive coordinator Gus Bradley due to schematic familiarity, included a player in cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. So, Ballard is no stranger to being aggressive for a player he wants. But with the depth the Colts currently have on the edge, the price may be a bit too high to go after Hendrickson.

Gabriel denies ‘entertainers' jab was aimed at Browns teammate Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel has denied he was referring to his teammate Shedeur Sanders when he aimed a jab at 'entertainers' in the NFL. 'There's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that's what I'm focused on doing,' Gabriel told CBS from the sidelines during the Browns' preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. Gabriel completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards and an interception. Related: The draft roughed up Shedeur Sanders. The NFL will demand even more Many on social media thought the comment was a reference to Sanders, the son of hall of famer Deion Sanders, who has received huge amounts of media attention since the Browns took him in the fifth round of this year's draft. The Browns picked Gabriel in the third round of the same draft and the duo are in a battle with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett to win the starter's job this season. Flacco is expected to start in Cleveland's opening game, but Sanders was impressive in his preseason debut last week before an oblique injury forced him to miss Saturday's game. 'I'm all about our team and each other,' Gabriel said after Saturday's game. 'I would never make that [comment about Sanders] and I've said it before that's why it's interesting, but for me I've explained it entertainers are you all, competitor, that's what I am, and all my teammates and we both have jobs to do, so that's it.'
