KOTA KINABALU: Some 150 B40 fishermen from Tanjung Aru, Sembulan, and Pulau Gaya received life jackets, signal lights, and other safety gear in a targeted initiative to address safety concerns. Sponsored by Tanjung Aru Gagasan Rakyat committee member Dr Ritchie Jay Cheng, in collaboration with its division chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah, the donation aims to improve safety standards for small-scale fishermen, many of whom lacked basic equipment. Ritchie emphasised the vital role of fishermen in Sabah's economy and praised the establishment of the Sabah Blue Economy Council, led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, to advance sustainable marine sectors. He also stressed the importance of supporting both fishing communities and tourism, particularly in Tanjung Aru, home to major hotels. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit opens firmer against US dollar amid rate cut expectations

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8 am, the local currency traded at 4.2050/2260, up from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened slightly firmer against the US dollar on Monday as market sentiment leaned towards a potential US interest rate cut. At 8 am, the local currency traded at 4.2050/2260, up from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted growing expectations for a September rate reduction by the US Federal Reserve. 'Given that consumer spending accounted for more than two-thirds of the US economy, the case for a September rate cut is gaining more steam,' he told Bernama. The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 58.6 points in August from 61.7 points the previous month. Other indicators, including the Current Condition Index and the Expectation Index, also declined in August. 'This suggests that consumer spending will likely weaken, while higher prices due to increased import tariffs may prevent them from splurging,' he added. The ringgit could test the psychological RM4.20 level against the US dollar today. A perceived delay in Fed rate cuts has weakened the US dollar in the near term, with the US Dollar Index hovering at 97.850 points. Against major currencies, the ringgit strengthened except against the euro, where it depreciated to 4.9224/9470 from Friday's 4.9185/9267. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8557/8701 from 2.8653/8702 and gained versus the British pound to 5.6999/7283 from 5.7050/7145. The local currency also performed well against regional peers. It appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.2777/2944 from 3.2820/2877 and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9361/13.0091 from 12.9760/13.0032. The ringgit improved against the Philippine peso to 7.36/7.41 from 7.37/7.39 and remained stable against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.0/261.4 * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS will use own logo

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Nizam said the matter had never arisen as GRS has remained firm in its original position, emphasising that Hajiji had never made any statement or suggestion to that effect. TAWAU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has reaffirmed its decision to use its own component party logo as the election symbol and identity for its candidates, and has no intention of 'borrowing' another component party's logo. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the decision was consistent with the stance of GRS Chairman who is also Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'There is no proposal to use another component party's logo,' he said when asked if GRS was considering using Pakatan Harapan's (PH) logo in the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN). Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said the matter had never arisen as GRS has remained firm in its original position, emphasising that Hajiji had never made any statement or suggestion to that effect. He said GRS leadership has from the start been consistent in defending and strengthening the existing Unity Government, which involves cooperation between GRS and PH. 'GRS members, especially in Gagasan, should not be concerned or confused by such rumours, as all our candidates will use the GRS logo as the official symbol in the upcoming PRN,' he said. On related matters, the Apas assemblyman said the GRS-PH combination had proven effective, with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan 1.0 (2021-2025) achieving 94 per cent of its targets through 467 initiatives, according to the SMJ Way Forward Initiative Report. Based on existing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), he expressed confidence the State Government was on the right track to restore Sabah's former glory. 'Achievements in economic development and public welfare under SMJ 2.0 would continue if given another mandate,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM600,000 boost for Sabah e-hailing workers

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Hajiji posing with the Sabah Moto Day participants. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government will allocate nearly RM600,000 to help gig workers in the e-hailing sector open accounts with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said 11,109 applications had already been received from e-hailing drivers who wish to make contributions. 'I am pleased to announce that the State Government will provide nearly RM600,000 to assist those who have yet to open an EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's parade ground, Sunday. Hajiji expressed satisfaction at the growing success of the annual motorcycling event, which this year drew around 60,000 riders and enthusiasts from across Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. 'The strong support from participants of all ages, races and religions reflects the unifying spirit of this gathering. We should see it positively, as such events contribute to Sabah's economy given the large turnout,' he said. He also urged participants to prioritise road safety, hoping the gathering would raise awareness among two-wheel motorsport fans. Highlighting the government's investment in young people, Hajiji said the state has spent RM1.33 billion on youth development initiatives between 2021 and 2025, including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million for skills and talent development. 'This is unprecedented for the state. We are committed to nurturing youth, who are our future leaders,' he added. Hajiji ended his speech by inviting the crowd to recite al-Fatihah for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Co-organiser Datuk Mazlan Joehari Manan, who also chairs the Anti-Drug Squad, said the first day of the event began with a show of solidarity for the late Zara Qairina. He thanked the state government for its continued support towards youth initiatives and expressed hope that participants would apply the benefits gained to their peers. 'We will channel any support we receive back towards the state and the well-being of young people,' Mazlan said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
