Japan men's soccer standout Ryo Germain scored his tournament-leading fifth goal in the eighth minute against South Korea on Tuesday night, July 15.
It was a high-stakes contribution for Germain, who plies his craft for the J.League's Sanfrecce Hiroshima, in the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Football Championship final in Yongin, South Korea. Teammate Yuki Soma created the scoring opportunity with a well-placed cross.

Manager Hajime Moriyasu selected all of the team's players from the J.League instead of also filling out the roster with players who compete for European soccer squads.
"My players made a great effort," Moriyasu said, according to Kyodo News. "They showed the pride of the J.League and the depth of our national team."
In Japan's first match of the E-1 Football Championship final round, Germain scored four goals in the opening half of a 6-1 rout of Hong Kong on July 8. Moriyasu's men then triumphed 2-0 over China in their second match of the tourney's final round on July 12.
Japan's Keisuke Osako (Sanfrecce) was named the E-1 Football Championship's Best Goalkeeper.

Playing its first of four home matches in Week 3 of the preliminary phase of the 2025 FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League, Japan rallied past Germany on Wednesday, July 16.
At Chiba Port Arena, Japan triumphed 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20.
National team standouts Yuki Ishikawa, Ran Takahashi and Kento Miyaura spearheaded Japan's come-from-behind victory. The threesome combined for 61 points, with 19 attack points, aka kills, apiece. Ishikawa, who had a match-best 22 points, also contributed two blocks and an ace before a lively crowd of 7,000.
After picking up the win over Germany to improve to 6-3 in the preliminary round, Japan's challenging Week 3 schedule was as follows: Argentina (July 17), top-ranked Brazil (July 18) and the United States (July 20).
Miyaura described his team's overall performance against Germany as positive. But he wasn't completely pleased with his performance.
"We knew this was going to be a difficult match, and we had to adjust some details during the match," Miyaura told reporters. "I'm satisfied with our victory, but I know I have some things to improve for the next matches, especially my serve."
The 18-team Volleyball Nations League runs from June 11 to August 3. And the top eight teams in the preliminary round, which is being staged in several countries during the three weeks of play, will advance to the quarterfinals.

A bear was seen at Sendai Classic Golf Club in Tomiya, Miyagi Prefecture on Wednesday, July 16. Due to safety concerns, JLPGA Tour officials canceled the next day's first round of the Meiji Yasuda Ladies Golf Tournament.
The tournament was shortened to three rounds (July 18-20), the JLPGA Tour announced on its website. And it will be contested without spectators.
"We deeply apologize to the fans who have been looking forward to the event, and ask for your understanding in this matter," the JLPGA Tour said in its news release.
Information on ticket refunds will be released as soon as possible, the JLPGA Tour also announced. Itsuki Takemoto (KYODO)
The Athletics selected Wakayama native Itsuki Takemoto in the 19th round of the 2025 MLB Draft on Monday, July 14.
A productive pitcher and designated hitter during the 2024 and '25 collegiate baseball seasons for the University of Hawaii, Takemoto was the 560th overall pick in the draft.
As a sophomore, Takemoto made 15 pitching appearances (14 starts) in 2025. He had a 2-6 record with a 5.75 ERA with 22 walks and 57 strikeouts in a team-high 67⅓ innings. The Chiben Gakuen Wakayama Senior High School graduate also played 45 games as the designated hitter, including 37 starts. He hit .256 with 21 RBIs.
In 2025, Takemoto earned All-Big West Conference accolades.
Boosting his visibility in front of MLB scouts, the right-handed pitcher competed in the Cape Cod League in 2024. The summer league is a showcase circuit for college players who are highly regarded pro prospects. In nine appearances for the Orleans Firebirds, Takemoto had a 3-1 record with a 0.71 ERA, striking out 23 batters in 25⅓ innings.
As a result of his dynamic effort on the mound, Takemoto received the Cape Cod League's 2024 BFC Whitehouse Outstanding Pitcher Award.
The Athletics moved from Oakland to West Sacramento following the 2024 season. They are scheduled to be based in the suburban city near the California capital through 2027 and then move to a new ballpark in Las Vegas. For now, they are simply known as the Athletics or the A's, without Oakland or West Sacramento as part of their official name.

Leão and Pulisic score as AC Milan beats Bari 2-0 in opener but Leão exits with apparent injury
MILAN (AP) — An apparent injury to Rafael Leão made it a bittersweet season debut for AC Milan as the Portugal winger and United States international Christian Pulisic both scored in a 2-0 win over Serie B side Bari in the opening round of the Italian Cup on Sunday. Leão appeared to injure his right calf after celebrating his headed goal early on and had to be substituted. Pulisic, meanwhile, followed up a shot off the crossbar in the first half by finishing off an exchange with Santiago Gimenez — who came on for Leão — shortly after the break at the San Siro. Newly signed Luka Modric came on in the 66th for his Milan debut at age 39. The former Ballon d'Or winner joined the seven-time European champion in July after 13 seasons with Real Madrid. Massimiliano Allegri, who was rehired as Milan's coach after winning Serie A with the Rossoneri nearly 15 years ago, was suspended. He began serving a two-match ban for an ugly outburst directed at the referees during the Italian Cup final as Juventus' manager in 2024. The outburst resulted in Juventus firing Allegri. Milan is usually one of the top eight seeds that has byes for the opening rounds of the Italian Cup and begins competing in December. But the Rossoneri finished eighth in the Italian league last season and lost the Cup final to Bologna. Bologna therefore was given the top seed even though it finished ninth in Serie A, pushing Milan down into the earlier rounds. Milan will next face Lecce in late September. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Also advancing were: Empoli, Sassuolo, Genoa, Venezia, Como, Cagliari, Pisa, Palermo, Frosinone and Parma. Serie A starts next weekend with Milan opening against promoted Cremonese on Saturday, again at the San Siro. It remains to be seen whether Leão will be available for the league opener. ___ AP soccer:

Create Account Toronto was coming off a stirring comeback win Friday and a 14-2 rout of the Texas Rangers Saturday, but fell behind early and never got the offence in gear against a quality opposing starter. The visiting bullpen hit a bit of a speed bump again, but with a six-run cushion giving up a couple of runs and some walks in the eighth inning didn't impact things much. Here are three takeaways from a winnable game that instead went 10-4 to the visitors: José Berríos of the Toronto Blue Jays pitches in the first inning of their MLB game against the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025 in Toronto. Photo by Cole Burston / Getty Images NO WAY JOSE Berrios could have had a far different afternoon at Rogers Centre had he shown more of a killer instinct. While the veteran has not looked to be in top form at times this season, Toronto's opening day starter still entered the game with a 9-4 record (including 4-1 at home) and 3.74 ERA. Please try again This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The right-hander only lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and six earned runs with only two strikeouts. His Achilles heel was his work with two strikes. Other than Marcus Semien's two-run home run in the second inning, Berrios could well have limited the damage and lasted into the sixth inning or beyond. But when Semien struck again in the fourth with a two-out double, followed by a Jake Burger RBI single, Berrios had managed two strikes on both batters and needed only one more to end the inning. He couldn't get it either time and actually went ahead 0-2 on both Cody Freeman and Jonah Heim, but could not retire either, giving up a double and a single. RECOMMENDED VIDEO Texas then ran itself out of the inning when Josh Smith tried to stretch a line drive off the wall into a double but was erased by a bullet from strong-armed Addison Barger. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Had the game stayed 2-1, Corey Seager's solo home run an inning later probably wouldn't have spelled the end of the day for Berrios. If something is physically bothering the workhorse, the club will soon have the option of giving him some time off (be it by going to a six-man rotation or even a stint on the injury list). Shane Bieber won't pitch in the series in Pittsburgh that starts Monday, but is expected to do so in Miami, perhaps on Friday, though that's still to be determined. Alejandro Kirk of the Toronto Blue Jays rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run in the second inning of their MLB game against the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025 in Toronto. Photo by Cole Burston / Getty Images THE BRIGHT SPOTS Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at least got another sellout crowd excited with a first-pitch homer to left with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, part of a strong game from the all-star first baseman. The blast went 439 feet to left centre field and he also singled on a similar splitter from Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi, who has had a tremendous season. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Guerrero and Alejandro Kirk, who hit a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the second inning, have both had plenty of success against Eovaldi in their careers. Guerrero entered the game 10-for-24 (.417) against him, while Kirk had gone 6-for-11 (.545). RECOMMENDED VIDEO Bo Bichette went 2-for-3 against Eovaldi and had hit .346 against him in 10 games before Sunday. The trio actually combined for all five Jays hits against Eovaldi in his seven strong innings. Other bright spots for the Jays on the day included a George Springer homer in the eighth after a pinch-hit Myles Straw infield single and the Marlins rallying at Fenway Park with three runs in the ninth to stun the Red Sox. That prevented Boston from gaining any ground on the Jays, who remained five games in front in the American League East. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. A Detroit loss in Minnesota also kept the team in first in the AL by percentage points. Toronto Blue Jays reliever Louis Varland pitches against the Colorado Rockies in the eighth inning of a baseball game Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, in Denver. Photo by David Zalubowski / AP Photo VARLAND'S ROUGH PATCH Louis Varland was a marquee trade deadline acquisition by the Jays and only surrendered a run in one of his first six appearances with the club, striking out eight in those 6 2/3 innings, but things changed this weekend. After catching Rowdy Tellez looking with a 97-m.p.h. fastball, Varland threw a first-pitch slider Friday to Semien and it went 393 feet over the wall, nearly costing Toronto the game. Varland has only thrown the slider on 6.4% of his pitches this season, but Semien was ready for it and made him pay. On Sunday after a couple of fastballs, Varland went with his knuckle curve (he throws the curve 38% of the time versus the fastball at 44.7%) and Evan Carter took it out of the park. Suddenly, one of the stingiest relievers in baseball has been getting hit hard a bit. He had only surrendered three home runs all season before joining the Jays and none since April 29. Nico Williams leads Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in their Spanish league opener
MADRID (AP) — With transfer rumors in the past, Nico Williams led Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in its opening Spanish league match on Sunday. Williams, who had been linked with a move to Barcelona in the offseason but seems set to stay with his boyhood club, put the hosts ahead by converting a 36th-minute penalty kick. Athletic, coming off a fourth-placed finish last season, added to the lead with a goal from Maroan Sannadi in the 43rd before Sevilla rallied with goals by Dodi Lukebakio in the 60th and Lucien Agoume in the 72nd. Robert Navarro put Athletic back in front for good by scoring in the 81st. Goalkeeper Unai Simon helped the hosts secure the victory as Sevilla pressed forward to the end. It was Athletic's first match with Iñaki Williams, Nico Williams' older brother, as its main captain — a first for a Black player at the club that traditionally only fields players from Spain's northern Basque Country region or adjoining areas. Atletico Madrid, the third-placed finisher last season, played at Espanyol later Sunday. Barcelona began the defense of its Spanish league title with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday. Real Madrid hosts Osasuna on Tuesday Depleted Getafe wins away Getafe got off to a 2-0 win at Celta Vigo with second-half goals from Adrián Liso and Christantus Uche. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The Madrid club had a depleted squad after not being able to register many of its new players because of financial fair play regulations.
