Stellantis offers voluntary redundancy scheme at Turin plant
Stellantis has started a voluntary redundancy plan for 610 workers at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, after introducing the scheme at other Italian facilities, the carmaker said on Monday.
Stellantis is cutting up to 1,600 staff in total across Italy this year through the voluntary redundancy scheme. At Mirafiori, the scheme "is aimed at supporting early retirement or different career opportunities", a company spokesperson said, adding workers at Mirafiori can sign up for it until the end of July.
The Mirafiori plant will have a stable workforce from August to prepare for the launch of the new hybrid version of the Fiat 500 city car, the spokesperson said. Full-scale production of the new model is expected to start in November.
Luigi Paone of Uilm, one of the unions which agreed the voluntary redundancy plan with Stellantis, said it would be aimed at workers closer to retirement age.
The plan "should serve to pave the way for the hiring of young workers as we approach the production start-up of the hybrid 500," Paone said.
Between April and May Stellantis agreed to similar packages at other assembly plants in Italy, including Melfi and Pomigliano, for a total workforce reduction of up to 1,660 workers this year.
The company has fewer than 40,000 staff in Italy, down from 55,000 in early 2021 when the group was created through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA.

Stellantis extends Italy voluntary redundancy scheme
Stellantis has expanded its voluntary redundancy scheme for Italy, affecting almost 700 workers at two plants in the south of the country, and bringing to almost 2,500 the planned workforce reduction this year, the carmaker said late on Tuesday. 'The company, with the aim of supporting early retirement or different career opportunities, has signed an agreement today with trade unions for 250 voluntary exits in the Cassino plant and another 427 voluntary exits in Atessa,' a statement said. Since April, Stellantis has announced similar packages at other assembly plants in Italy, including Melfi and Pomigliano in the south and Mirafiori in northern Turin, the birthplace of its Fiat brand, affecting 2,439 people in total. It also offered this year permanent jobs to about 200 people at the Atessa and Mirafiori plants, most of whom were previously on temporary contracts or with advisory positions. The company in May named Antonio Filosa as the new CEO as it seeks to recover from plunging sales and profit. The Citroen C3 1.2T Max hatchback with its black trim has a crossover appeal about it. Think Citroen and immediately it conjures up images of quirky French designs and fantastic suspension, especially in the iconic DS. They've had a couple of clangers along the way but generally they're very good cars. South Africa has a checkered history with the brand, now under the Stellantis banner, with the manufacturer withdrawing in 2016 and then returning again in 2019. Made in India It's also been a mixed bag when it comes to sales, in part because of our disastrous exchange rate to the Euro that made it difficult to challenge manufacturers importing from China and India. This was especially so for the Citroen C3 that was outpricing itself in the market but Stellantis was aware of its potential in the budget market, so made the call to bring in the Indian-built model. It proved to be a wise decision and the C3 is one of Stellantis' top sellers and now competes against the likes of the Hyundai Exter, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Nissan Magnite. We had the range-topping Citroen C3 1.2T Max on test and came away suitably impressed, considering the segment it plays in. Exterior There's nothing outrageously French about the design, preferring instead a more sober look. The black trimmings around the base of the doors and window frames, faux skid plate, 15-inch alloys, roof-rails and the Citroen chrome double chevron give it a bit of a crossover look and appeal. Engine It's powered by the group's tried and tested three-pot 1.2-litre turbocharged engine delivering 81kW and 205Nm mated to a six-speed automatic transmission connected to the front wheels. Small naturally aspirated engines in some of the competitors tend to wheeze at up-country heights so that turbocharger is a boon for highveld owners.
