Iowa Sends Message Before Caitlin Clark's Second WNBA Season

Yahoo16-05-2025

The 2025 WNBA season begins this Friday evening, but before that, the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team shared a message about the highly anticipated opening of the pro league's new campaign.
'Let the games begin 😎Happy WNBA Opening Day!!' the Hawkeyes wrote in a post on X, which also featured a graphic showing former Iowa stars who are now in the top women's basketball league in the world, including, of course, Indiana Fever superstar point guard Caitlin Clark.

Others in the image are guard Kate Martin and center Megan Gustafson of the Las Vegas Aces and Washington Mystics rookie guard Lucy Olsen.
Clark has the shiniest star of them all following an incredible rookie campaign in the WNBA. In the 2024 WNBA season, Clark averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds while leading the league in 3-pointers and dimes.
The two-time Naismith College Player of the Year added to her ever-growing collection of accolades by winning the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, as she helped the Fever win 20 games and make the playoffs for just the first time since 2016.

However, Clark isn't playing this Friday as the Fever will debut on Saturday versus Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indiana.

Meanwhile, Martin and the Aces also play their first assignment on Saturday against the New York Liberty. Gustafson is unlikely to see action in that contest, as she is still out with an injury.
As for Olsen, she can make her WNBA debut in the Mystics' Friday game against the Atlanta Dream.

Golden State Valkyries Make Roster Decision on WNBA Champion

Golden State Valkyries Make Roster Decision on WNBA Champion originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Valkyries snapped a four-game skid with a dominant 95-68 win over the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, bolstered by Kayla Thornton's double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, Cecilia Zandalasini's 18 points and Veronica Burton's 12 assists. Advertisement That victory improved the Valkyries to a 3-5 record in their inaugural 2025 campaign. On Sunday, the Valkyries announced the temporary suspension of forward Zandalasini's contract to allow her to represent Italy at FIBA EuroBasket 2025, which runs from June 18-29 across venues in the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Greece. The competition will determine continental supremacy and serve as a qualifier for the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup, with Italy's squad relying heavily on Zandalasini's WNBA experience. Zandalasini enters her first season with Golden State after being selected from the Minnesota Lynx roster in the December 2024 expansion draft. Advertisement In her four appearances (two starts) this year, she's averaged 10.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 23.0 minutes per game. A decorated international talent, Zandalasini was a WNBA champion with the Minnesota Lynx in 2017, WNBA Commissioner's Cup champion (2024) and MVP of the 2016 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. She has also won multiple Turkish league and cup titles with Fenerbahçe (2019, 2020, 2021) and an Italian Supercup crown (2023). Golden State Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes (15) speaks to Yamashita-Imagn Images Zandalasini's departure will leave a 10-point-per-game scoring void at the small-forward spot and test Golden State's young depth. Management has signaled that Zandalasini will rejoin the roster immediately after Italy's EuroBasket run, but with eight games between now and the end of the month, she leaves a significant hole to fill. Angel Reese's Former Coach Shares Strong Message Amid WNBA Season

Angel Reese's Former Coach Shares Strong Message Amid WNBA Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky's early-season struggles continued on Saturday night, with the team falling 79-52 to the Caitlin Clark-less Indiana Fever. Advertisement After back-to-back wins to end the month of May, this now sends Chicago back down to 2-5 on the season, third last in the WNBA standings. While Chicago was dealt its fifth loss on the year, former Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon took to Instagram to repost a motivational quote from Billionaire Hustle (@billionaire_hustle): "Keep your goals quiet. Not everyone watching is clapping," alongside an image of NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Weatherspoon previously coached the Sky during Angel Reese's standout rookie campaign in 2024. Teresa Weatherspoon, InstagramTeresa Weatherspoon, Instagram After retiring as a player in 2004, Weatherspoon honed her coaching chops at Louisiana Tech and as an NBA assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans (2020-2023) before the Chicago Sky hired her in October 2023 as head coach. Advertisement In her lone WNBA season at the helm (2024), she guided a rebuilding Sky squad to a 13-27 record, finishing sixth in the Eastern Conference and missing the playoffs. She went on to finish the year averaging 13.6 points and a league-best 13.1 rebounds across 34 games, earning her a spot on the WNBA All-Star Game roster and All-Rookie Team. Entering her second year, Reese has continued her run as the league's premier rebounder, leading the league in rebounds per game (12.3), though scoring has dipped to 9.1 points per outing. Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tears ACL, will miss rest of 2025 season

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering a torn ACL in her right knee during Chicago's eventual 27-point loss to the Indiana Fever, the team announced Sunday. Vandersloot sustained the injury at the 5:29 mark of the first quarter of Saturday night's loss to Indiana while driving to the basket. Teammates gathered around her on the court as she lay on the floor in pain, and Vandersloot was eventually carried to the locker room before quickly being ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Advertisement 'It's heartbreaking,' Sky rookie guard Hailey Van Lith said after Chicago's loss. 'She's our engine,' coach Tyler Marsh added. 'She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow.' Angel Reese, the second-year forward from LSU, posted her reaction on X. Vandersloot, 36, was the No. 3 pick of the Sky in 2011 and spent the first 12 years of her career with the franchise, leading Chicago to its first championship in 2021. She played the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the New York Liberty, where she won the 2024 title, before returning to the Sky on a one-year deal this past offseason. Advertisement 'We're thinking of her,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello told reporters on Sunday. 'She's playing great. She's the leader out there.' Heading into this season, Vandersloot had already been Chicago's all-time assists leader, and she became the franchise's all-time leading scorer in late May, passing her wife, and fellow former Sky guard, Allie Quigley on the Sky's scoring list. Vandersloot started the first seven games of Chicago's season, averaging 10.6 points and 5.3 assists. Her injury will likely thrust Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in April's draft, into the Sky's starting lineup. Van Lith replaced Vandersloot after the injury occurred and played a career-high 26 minutes in Saturday's loss, which was the first WNBA game at the United Center. The Sky will also likely lean more on guards Ariel Atkins and Rachel Banham as they look to proceed and draw the most out of their developing frontcourt of Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. Advertisement Their first test without Vandersloot comes Tuesday, against her former team, as the Sky travel to Brooklyn to play the Liberty. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
