13MP: Malaysia allocates RM67b to build schools, boost STEM and early education
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the construction of schools would also be made a condition for Planning Permission for new large-scale housing projects while the construction of vertical schools would be expanded to address the issue of student density and the lack of suitable school sites.
'The government is determined to ensure that the enrolment rate of pre-school and secondary school students reaches 98 per cent, which is above the universal enrolment rate.
'For the record, by 2025, the government has upgraded 1,200 dilapidated schools nationwide,' he said when tabling the 13th MP at Dewan Rakyat here, today.
Meanwhile, he said the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) which is the main benchmark at national level will continue to be used to assess the effectiveness of the education system's policies, curriculum and pedagogical approaches.
Anwar said the quality of the country's education at the same time would be improved to be at the international average level based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) assessments to ensure the education system remains competitive and relevant.
'To improve educational outcomes, the government is moving towards making pre-school compulsory starting at the age of five. At the same time, more preschool facilities in schools managed by the Ministry of Education (MOE) will be provided, especially in rural areas.
'The government will also conduct a review of optimal school hours, evaluate the effectiveness of special schools and improve the education model for gifted and talented students,' he said.
He said focus would also be given to strengthening the mastery of the Malay language at all levels, in addition to making English part of the language of learning and communication, while additional language learning would also be expanded.
'Emphasis would also be given to strengthening STEM education and digital literacy, including the introduction of AI basics to produce a generation that is ready to meet the demands of the high-value future job market,' he said.
He said the national education system would also be streamlined to be more integrated, effective and responsive to future challenges and for this, the MOE would be fully responsible for regulating preschool to secondary education.
For pre-university and higher education, Anwar said it would be coordinated by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) with the aim of clarifying jurisdiction and improving policy and implementation efficiency. — Bernama

This development has created uncertainty for semiconductor companies operating in Malaysia, particularly US-based firms that have long used the country as a trusted base for global supply and exports to the US market. FMM noted that establishing operations abroad is complex and capital-intensive, requiring time, expertise, and sustained institutional support. Therefore, it stressed that these support measures are critical to help Malaysian manufacturers respond effectively to shifting global trade dynamics without being forced to relocate core operations. With the right support, FMM said companies can retain and grow high-value activities in Malaysia while also expanding strategically where necessary. It also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the government and international partners to ensure that Malaysia's position as a competitive, reliable, and trusted hub in the global semiconductor and manufacturing ecosystem is not only preserved but continuously strengthened. Malaysia is globally recognised as a leading hub for semiconductor assembly, packaging, and testing, contributing an estimated 13 per cent of global backend semiconductor output. Semiconductors were previously excluded from US reciprocal tariffs, and the proposed policy shift has raised immediate concerns among manufacturers, many of whom are seeking urgent clarification on whether their Malaysia-based operations will now fall within the scope of the new measure. - Bernama

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) headquarters in Bukit Jalil, Anwar said he hopes the development of the new facility will spur the country to get its first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles. Anwar said the government has been supporting sports in the country through efforts from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, as well as OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. "I think the government, through the Youth and Sports Ministry, has been very proactive and supportive. You have a good minister who has been harassing me for more money and more funds "With Hannah and Norza, everyone is now waiting and we expect one gold medal at least, otherwise they'll be in trouble," said Anwar in jest at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday. Anwar added that the new headquarters comes as a need to provide the 58 National Sports Associations (NSA) a place to gather and share knowledge to further enhance sports performance. Expected to cost RM103mil in total, the new Olympic House will be constructed in Bukit Jalil within the Kuala Lumpur Sports City, with the new building located next to the National Hockey Stadium. Norza had previously said that the main building is targeted to be done before the 2027 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, but Anwar hopes the project can be completed ahead of its intended schedule. Meanwhile, Anwar also stressed the importance of sportsmanship, stressing that there is no room for hooliganism in sports at any level, particularly in football. "As I always tell my grandchildren in any sports they are involved in, especially when they get upset, that it's not the spirit. "You must try and excel to win, but must accept the fact that the best athlete will win and that's the spirit of sportsmanship. "That is why we take any issue of hooliganism or violence in sports seriously, particularly in football in this country. Everyone supports their team or their state, but that does not allow them to create chaos," he said. The new Olympic House is inspired by the one in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will replace OCM's current base at Jalan Hang Jebat.
