Janhvi Kapoor's casting in Param Sundari irks Malayali actor Pavithra Menon: ‘Hum kum talented hote hain?'
In a re-posted video, which was earlier deleted by Instagram, actor Pavithra Menon states, 'I'm a Malayali and I watched the trailer of Param Sundari, and want to really address this — what's the problem in hiring a proper Malayali actor? Hum kum talented hote hain kya? Mohiniyattam hi kar rahi hoti hai. Aisa nahi hota Kerala mein bhai. Jaise ki main baat kar rahi hun, Hindi mein. I can also speak Malayalam really well.' She went on to ask 'I mean, is it so hard to find a Malayali to play the role in a Hindi movie?' in Malayalam to demonstrate.
Pavithra goes on to add, 'You know, humne bhi bade aise cheezein kiye hain, 90s Malayalam filmon mein when we had to show Punjabis 'Balle, balle, balle'. Now its 2025. I think everybody knows how a Malayali talks and how they are as normal as anybody else. We don't wear just jasmin flowers and do Mohiniyattam everywhere, and walk around the office and house. Please, request hai yaar. Thiruvananthapuram agar aap bol nahi sakte naa toh Trivandrum bol do, hum khush ho jaayenge.'
Pavithra's post has left the internet divided. Some netizens have lauded her for this video. For instance, a fan shared, 'Superb 👏👏👏👏 very well said. Enough of these silly stereotype 🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️,' whereas another comment read, 'This is the voice of every malayalee who has seen the trailer of 'PARAMA SUNDARI' 😬.' However, some have trolled Pavithra, questioning her stance. One such internet user pointed out, '"Mohiniyattam kar rahi hoti hai" - she's literally playing a mohiniyattam dance teacher in the film. What else is she supposed to do?,' whereas another asked, 'So by your logic, Mrunal Thakur shouldn't have played a Punjabi in Son of Sardar 2, Aishwarya Rai shouldn't play North-Indian characters, and Rashmika, Keerthi Suresh, Parvathy and all should stop working in Bollywood films ?'

But as the act progresses, she mimics an imagined backlash the song might face if released today, joking about states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu resisting Hindi. Her quip,'Why is there so much Hindi in this song?', triggered sharp reactions online, particularly among those opposing Hindi imposition in southern states. Many felt the satire missed the mark and instead mocked those resisting linguistic dominance. Reactions online Kannada writer Guruprasad DN, in a post originally shared in Kannada, called the skit misplaced and urged comedians to deeply reflect on what, and whom, their satire targets. "As society gradually gains some discernment, questions must arise on various issues; the matter of what humor or satire should be directed against or about should be of utmost importance to any artist," he wrote. 'Today, Hindi imposition is a very serious issue. The central government is pursuing a policy of making Hindi dominate over other languages. This is having a detrimental impact on the lives of ordinary people,' he noted. In such times, he said, humor must serve as a critique of power, not of the people resisting it. But she got it wrong, indirectly attacking those who oppose the imposition of one language over others. Poisonous!" Some, however, defended the comedian. Fahadh Faasil Recalls Stepping Away From Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Film: "Was Asked To Stay In US To Work On My..."
Malayalam cinema star Fahadh Faasil once came close to collaborating with Oscar winning filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu on a film. The actor, who is regarded as one of the most versatile performers of Malayalam cinema, said the Birdman director asked him to stay in America to work on his accent for the potential project. In an interview with Cue Studio, Fahadh Faasil initially quipped, "He didn't like me, and I got rejected after the auditions". Later, he gave a more elaborate answer. The actor said he was required to be in the US for around four months and that too without any payment. The Super Deluxe star said he quit the project in its fledgling state as he didn't understand its "commercial side". "It wasn't exactly that he rejected me, but he was concerned about my accent. I was asked to stay in America for three to four months to work on it, and no payment was involved. "That is why I stepped away from it, because the commercial side of it did not make sense to me. I did not feel enough fire to put in that much effort just to work on my accent," Fahadh Faasil said during the interview, as quoted by Cinema Express. The actor later credited Malayalam cinema for bringing "all the magic in my career". There's also unconfirmed chatter online that the film Fahadh Faasil quit was a Tom Cruise film. The actor, however, didn't reveal any more details about the project. Fahadh Faasil is looking forward to the release of his Malayalam movie Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira, written and directed by Althaf Salim. Also starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, the film is slated to be released in theatres on August 29 on the occasion of Onam.
