Yellowstone's Kevin Costner lines up next movie role after box office disaster

Daily Record2 days ago
Kevin Costner is set to star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in an upcoming dramedy after his recent box office flop
Yellowstone legend Kevin Costner has landed a role in a forthcoming comedy-drama, marking one of his initial film appearances since the opening chapter of his ambitious four-part Western saga Horizon bombed at cinemas.

This comes after his exit from his starring role as John Dutton in the popular Paramount Network series by Taylor Sheridan midway through its fifth season.

After quitting the show to concentrate on his personal passion project, the Hollywood heavyweight has now secured a part in the comedy-drama Honeymoon With Harry for Amazon MGM Studios.

Costner will appear alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie adapted from Bart Baker's novel and penned by Dan Fogelman, renowned for his successful NBC series This Is Us.
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are set to helm the project, following their previous collaboration with Fogelman on the beloved romantic comedy Crazy Stupid Love, plus This Is Us and Paradise, reports the Mirror.
The directing duo have previously taken charge of films including I Love You Phillip Morris, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and Focus.
According to a synopsis from Deadline: "The film follows a man (Gyllenhaal) as he decides to go on a honeymoon with his would-be father-in-law (Costner) after his fiancée dies two days before their wedding."
Honeymoon With Harry represents just one of a handful of screen projects Costner has secured whilst awaiting the provisional releases of the second and third instalments of his Horizon epic.

Chapter 2 was shown at the Venice and Santa Barbara film festivals but remains without a widespread release following the commercial disappointment of the inaugural chapter.
The next instalment is currently under production, with the fourth and concluding chapter in its early stages of development.
Apart from his starring and directing role in his ambitious Civil War epic, he revisited the same period of American history for the period spy thriller The Gray House, which he assisted in producing through his company, Territory Pictures.

He's also lined up to feature in the forthcoming surfer thriller Headhunters, alongside Chloe East and Daniel Zovatto, a film which Costner co-penned with director Steven Holleran.
Lastly, he's scheduled to appear in an as-yet-untitled film from filmmaker Ariel Vromen, with whom he previously worked on the 2016 thriller Criminal, also featuring Gary Oldman and Ryan Reynolds.
In the meantime, Costner's co-star Gyllenhaal was most recently seen in the Apple TV+ thriller Presumed Innocent and Prime Video's remake of Road House, both of which were released last year.

Two-time Oscar winner's career almost killed by most expensive film ever made

The 1995 post-apocalyptic action film Waterworld was dubbed as the most expensive film ever made - but it nearly ruined two-time Oscar winner Kevin Costner's career The 1995 post-apocalyptic action flick Waterworld caused quite a stir when it premiered, but for all the wrong reasons. ‌ Labelled as the priciest film ever produced, the Kevin Costner-led movie nearly sank the career of the two-time Oscar winner. ‌ Helmed by Kevin Reynolds and penned by Peter Rader and David Twohy, the film was based on Rader's original 1986 script. Costner also served as a producer alongside John Davis and Charles Gordon. ‌ Set in a far-off, post-apocalyptic future where the polar ice caps have entirely melted and sea levels have surged over 7,600 metres (25,000 feet), Waterworld centres around a nameless antihero known only as 'The Mariner', who navigates the submerged Earth in his trimaran. Waterworld's reported production budget was a staggering $172 million, which ballooned to a total expenditure of $235 million once marketing and distribution costs were added. Despite earning the title of the most expensive film ever made at the time and becoming the ninth-highest grossing film of 1995, the Kevin Reynolds-directed film was still deemed a box-office flop, reports the Express. The film eventually turned a profit - thanks to home video sales, TV broadcast rights, and other revenue streams - yet it was still viewed as a letdown at the box-office. It even scored an Oscar nomination for Best Sound at the 68th Academy Awards. The film's launch resulted in the creation of four themed attractions named WaterWorld at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Singapore, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Beijing. Computer games and a book adaptation also followed the movie's debut. Featuring Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino, Michael Jeter, Jack Black, and Gerard Murphy, Waterworld struggled with reviewers. This alongside its cinema takings upon launch meant it was deemed a flop, particularly within Academy Award winner Kevin Costner's body of work. ‌ The picture's poor critical and box office reception sparked doubts about Costner's appeal as a headline star - given the production was the most costly movie ever produced at that point. With a 59 per cent critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, film writers weren't particularly taken with the expensive cinema venture, as one reviewer wrote: "Far from being the magnificent bomb many had predicted, Waterworld is worse. It's mediocre, and that just won't do." Another critic added: "What the mind remembers of the film is simply water, and everything else - the action, the romance, the pseudo-green politics, the strenuous special effects - amounts to words written on water." ‌ One critic remarked on the film's cost, saying: "With its wisp of a story and its even greater wisp of an action star, Waterworld will be remembered more for its cost than for its achievement." Audience reviews were equally unimpressed, with one viewer writing: "A totally passable and forgettable action movie. I liked the villain, he seemed to be the only actor really trying, but besides that it's all low effort 90's cheese, and it just so happened to be the most expensive movie ever at the time". Another viewer added: "I waited nearly 30 years to watch this film. I heard it was bad. How bad could it be? It's awful." Waterworld can be rented on Amazon Prime Video for £3.49.

Fringe 2025 – A Vessel Born To Float

Yazmin Monét Watkins lives in LA and she is very proficient on roller skates. She does not get to show off her proficiency just as much in the Box at Assembly on George Square as she does at home where she 'does a lot of street skating', so invite her outside after her show to demonstrate her skills. But inside the Box her humorous work is an exploration of the intersection of race, gender, queerness, justice, community, self-love and the healing properties of water. As a love letter and affirmation for Black women, it is proudly and unapologetically Black. An internationally acclaimed poet, comedian, and performer, she brings an electrifying, heart-centered work to the stage blending poetry, comedy, and skating. With a lifelong love of the ocean, Yazmin weaves powerful water imagery throughout her writing from swimming to tides, waves, and the pull of the current. Her poetry celebrates Black women, honours her experience as a queer woman, and often takes the form of lyrical love letters to Black Lives Matter. Hand-selected by Tina Knowles (Beyoncé's mum) as one of only five Artists-in-Residence to develop this piece, Yazmin has also brought her voice and vision to major platforms such as NBC, Netflix, and Comedy Central. The project is directed by Larryjean Powell. Her one-hour show promises to be a rollercoaster that will make you laugh, cry, learn, and dream. She asks audiences to arrive open-hearted and leave uplifted, empowered, and ready to create change in their communities.
