Sudipto Sen on Best Director win at National Awards: Vindication of our 10-year struggle

India Today3 days ago
Director Sudipto Sen won Best Director for 'The Kerala Story' at the 71st National Film Awards. The film sparked nationwide debate and conversation upon its release in 2023. In an exclusive chat with India Today, Sen called the honour a validation of years of research, perseverance, and public support."Naturally, I'm feeling great,' Sen said shortly after the National Awards win. "But I would have been even happier if the film had also received the principal award. Still, it's a vindication of what we set out to communicate.'advertisementStarring Adah Sharma, 'The Kerala Story' was released in 2023 and was met with both overwhelming public support and heated controversy. Despite the polarising discourse, the film went on to become a box office hit.
Sen recalled how 'The Kerala Story' started as a modest project but received massive attention and appreciation post-release.'We already got our award in the form of audience blessings. Even two years after release, people are still talking about the film on social media. On OTT platforms, we were in the top 10 for nearly 35 weeks out of 70. That's the kind of love and engagement we witnessed," he said. The film, which focused on the alleged ISIS recruitment model in India, struck a nerve among audiences despite its modest budget and limited marketing."We didn't expect it to become so big. After a decade of research and struggle, this award feels like a reward for that journey," he added. When asked whether the National Award felt like closure following the controversies surrounding the film, Sen acknowledged the initial backlash but insisted that the narrative changed once people watched the film.'Yes, there was controversy in the beginning, but that faded as audiences realised the film wasn't about religion—it was about a very real and serious issue. ISIS's model of recruitment had impacted parts of Europe and America, and we were showing how it had roots in India too, particularly Kerala,' Sen explained. He added that 'The Kerala Story' was often mislabelled due to political sensitivities in the country, especially around the word 'Muslim'.'People assumed it was Islamophobic, but it wasn't. Once they saw it, they understood it was about terrorism—not religion. And ironically, the controversy helped us. We didn't need to spend on publicity. People organically found their personal connection to the film.'Sen began working on the project in 2012, and his collaborator from Kerala, Ambika JK, had been involved since 2010. For the director, the award isn't just recognition—it's the culmination of over a decade of hard work. When asked if he had spoken to anyone since the news broke, Sen shared that he had just spoken to actor Adah Sharma, who played the lead role.advertisement'She has been our biggest inspiration—on and off-screen,' he said.As he celebrated with friends and colleagues, Sen was clearly overwhelmed.'It's a happy moment. We're just grateful,' he signed off.The Kerala Story is currently streaming on Zee5.- EndsMust Watch

Urvashi plays Leelamma in Ullozhukku, which also stars Parvathy Thiruvothu. Urvashi slams National Award jury Urvashi questioned the logic behind categorising her role as 'supporting' when both she and Parvathy were contending in the Best Actress category. She questioned, 'Is there any standard scale for acting? Or is it that after a certain age, this is all you'll get?' Urvashi didn't mince words as she added that these awards should make the recipient proud instead of being handed over with no explanation. 'This is not pension money to be silently accepted. How are these decisions made? What criteria is followed?' she questioned. Urvashi's previous National Award Incidentally, Urvashi faced something similar when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for the 2006 film Achuvinte Amma, in which she played the lead. She mentioned that even back then, there were 'politics' and she has only strived to make meaningful cinema over lobbying. She also called on Union Minister Suresh Gopi to investigate the process and advocate for Malayalam cinema's rightful place. 71st National Film Awards The 71st National Film Awards were announced on Friday night. And this National Award feels exactly like that. I'm still letting it sink in, but my heart is full. This song was a special experience in many ways. There was a purity in the process of revisiting classical roots, of telling a story through movement, of blending tradition with cinema in a way that resonated." Towards the end of her post, Vaibhavi also praised Ranveer and Tota Roy for their dance skills, despite not being trained classical dancers. She said, 'To see Ranveer and Tota Roy Chowdhury, who aren't classical dancers, immerse themselves so beautifully into the performance-that's the magic of trust, dedication, and love for the art." Dhanush slams AI version of Raanjhanaa: It has completely disturbed me

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Tamil cinema star Dhanush expressed his disappointment over the altered AI ending of his Bollywood debut film 'Raanjhanaa". The film, which originally came out in 2013, was directed by Aanand L Rai and also starred Sonam Kapoor in the lead role. It was recently re-released in theatres. But this time, the ending was altered with the help of an AI, which got mixed reactions from the audience and was also pointed out by the filmmaker. Now, the lead actor Dhanush shared his take on the same and said it wasn't the film he committed to 12 years ago. The 42-year-old actor shared a post on his X handle on Sunday, calling the new version of the film disturbing, adding it has 'stripped the soul" of the movie. 'The re-release of 'Raanjhanaa' with an Al-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago," he wrote in the post. The actor said such practices threaten the 'integrity of storytelling". 'The use of Al to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future," he added. Set in Varanasi and Delhi, the story of the film follows Kundan (Dhanush), a Hindu boy who falls in love with Zoya (Kapoor), a Muslim girl, from childhood. Towards the end of the film, Kundan is shot at a rally and dies later at a hospital. In the altered version, the actor doesn't die at the end of the film. Rai has previously slammed production and distribution company Eros for the latest version. The filmmaker said the film didn't need a new climax and had already achieved cult status with its original version. Following, Eros responded to the maker claiming they have always been at the forefront of leveraging emerging technologies and he objective of the alternative ending was to enhance viewer engagement and present a fresh perspective. Complementing the original storyline and has been clearly labelled as an alternate version. The script of 'Raanjhanaa" was penned by Himanshu Sharma. The film also featured Abhay Deol, Swara Bhasker, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in pivotal roles. PTI ATR ATR ATR view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
